kevin j 01-06-08, 12:05 PM Calling for 2 inches of rain in San Diego today according to ESPN Radio.
2 inches of rain today in San Diego? Not a chance. Now, 4 hrs before kickoff, it is partly cloudy with the sun breaking through. I'm about 12 miles north of Qualcomm Stadium.
kevinivey 01-06-08, 04:10 PM No HD for the pregame. Video and audio drops as well . Wltx-DT, Columbia, SC via TWC.
Mike4HDTV 01-06-08, 04:39 PM PQ is the best of the 4 games this weekend even with the rain. The audio sounds great. Watching OTA (WFOR).
ccotenj 01-06-08, 04:42 PM initial pq pretty darn good. maybe a tad soft on the main cams, but could be because of the drizzle. GREAT color. good grass. no pixelation. sharp and no pixelation on closeups. typical cbs quality.
aq reasonably good. crowd is a little quiet to start the game. surrounds a bit "distant" (for lack of a better term). good on-field sounds.
comcast south jersey.
i see we get "big guns" hochuli today... :) hopefully he won't feel the need to put his stamp on the game.
Nicolae 01-06-08, 04:43 PM Pretty bad blocking on any kind of fast motion here on WTVR OTA in Richmond, VA. 2 subchannels, looks like the main is getting about 15Mbit
Good PQ from CBS so far despite the drizzle and water dripping in front of the right 20 yard line camera. WFSB-DT via Comcast.
BigDawgQC 01-06-08, 04:47 PM PQ & AQ really good today. WRAL Raleigh Time Warner
Run4two 01-06-08, 04:50 PM I'm lovin it here (except for the score :( ) on TWC.
Erik Tracy 01-06-08, 04:50 PM Watching in San Diego on KFMB HD via TWC (SA8300HDC via HDMI 1080i passthru to Panny 50PZ77U).
Typical CBS PQ (Crappy Blocky Sucky = CBS).
Logos are badly macroblocked as they flash in and out - some macroblocking on fast motion.
I'd have to say that in general 720P is better than 1080i or that FOX (720P) does a better job that CBS (1080i) for sporting events.
I've yet to see a decent CBS broadcast with logos and motion.

this would definitely sound like an affiliate issue...

Definitely sounds like a local affiliate issue. Does your CBS station have sub channels taking up extra bandwidth? 1080i would suffer a lot more than 720p from losing bandwidth to subs.

Not sure.
How would I go about finding out?
I'd definitely post a follow up to this if I can find out anything.
Thanks,
Erik

Agreed on the PQ and AQ. I think CBS's audio "style" is too keep the crowd a little more hushed.
Watching WOIO-DT Cleveland, with one WeatherNow sub on 50" 1080p plasma. WeatherNow is running about 2Mbps, with about 16Mbps going to the main.
Some of the closeups on this game look damn near stunning, it's too bad such great PQ is so far and few between these days.
jeff2631 01-06-08, 05:10 PM KFMB-DT OTA San Diego looks good (no sub channels).
Over 18 Mbps.

Jeff,
Do you see macroblocking on logos and motion?
If not, then it's probably TWC.
I know it is not inherently HD broadcasts in 1080i because I've seen NBC games that are much better and Discovery HD in 1080i is better as well.
I know it is not the HDTV as 720p broadcasts and SD DVDs as well as Blu-Rays on my set look VERY good.
That rules out the cabling, the STB, the AVR, and the HDTV and leaves the source signal at some point.
Erik
ccotenj 01-06-08, 05:19 PM leave feet, fumble ball... one of the great truisms in football...
wonder if this game will evolve like the earlier game? chargers look like gmen did in the 1st quarter. dead.
Looks Good on FIOS in HB, I see a little MB (especially in the graphics) but not horrible. I have seen cleaner games though. Up close cam looks better than Wide Angle.
GO CHARGERS...or at least get going!
jeff2631 01-06-08, 05:27 PM i also receive KCBS-DT OTA Los Angeles which also has no sub channels but has only 17 Mbps. Also looks good.

Erik Tracy 01-06-08, 05:29 PM Wow the more I watch this the more I'm seeing crappy PQ.
Very disappointed - in the broadcast that is.
Been in San Diego for many many years now, I've learned not to get too emotionally attached to the Chargers - they are reknowned here for disappointing the fans when it comes to crunch time - like now.
They ALWAYS manage to self-destruct....
Erik
WCBS-DT via Cablevision
Great PQ, very very little blocking, only on certain cameras.
One of the best CBS games this season, if not the best.

Good for you. Not sure why it sucks in San Diego.
Chargers suck....expected.

buck up soldier! :) they are only 3 down... rivers DOES need to man up and quit being such a crybaby though... he doesn't exactly lead the league in maturity does he? :p
although i am cheering for the titans. i'd much rather see them in foxborough next weekend than the jags. let the colts deal with them.

Just because I live in San Diego doesn't mean I'm a Chargers fan.
I'm routing for the Packers as Bret Favre is more in my age group and I admire him for is hutzpah! :D
The Chargers reputation for choking is too consistent for me to get emotionally invested with them.
If anything I'm a Colts fan from way back to when they were the Baltimore Colts. So if the Chargers do win, that's ok -they'll be fodder for the Colts.
I just need to figure out who to rip a new hole for the crappy CBS broadcasts!

ErikWell, if the OTA info above is accurate, than either the local station's encoder is bad (very unlikely) or TWC would be the culprit.
icemannyr 01-06-08, 06:11 PM How did the cursing sound in DD 5.1? :P
Watching OTA on WTVR (Richmond, VA)
Looks Amazing!

IMO, that would probably be the most likely explanation.

kevinivey 01-06-08, 07:01 PM Looks great here in Columbia ,SC. Wltx-DT via TWC, but the audio is 5 channel stereo.
jefbal99 01-06-08, 07:36 PM Tied for Best of the weekend with the fox game earlier. NBC Late game yesterday is 3rd and the early game from nbc yesterday was the clear loser.
All OTA in Lansing Michigan.
Congrats to the Chargers
I WANT MORE 01-07-08, 08:20 AM Anyone watch this game on D* 80? I thought this was one of the lousiest CBS games this year PQ wise.
I also thought the main cameras were a little soft compared to the usual CBS PQ.
