Toshiba is now expected to further promote installation of HD-DVD drives in personal computers, targeting users who watch movies on their PCs, the Nikkei business daily said.

"The core of its turn-around plan is to capture those who watch DVDs on personal computers, a popular practice in the United States," the newspaper said.

Of course I can't fault them for doing whatever they can to keep their business alive, but it certainly is not good news for anyone who is looking to buy a computer down the road here.

Their come back solution should include the making of Blu-Ray Players. In business the hardest decision is to recognize when to throw in a towel. Many companies hold on too long and hurt themselves and the consumer.

Sounds like resignation to me. A true niche market.

I have 5 computers in my home and all of them have a DVD players in them and I can honestly tell you that even when traveling for work I dont play movies on my PC's, thats what Ipod touches and PSP's are for. This will not help the cause, the only thing this will ceratin is a BD player swap out for all the consumers that get get stuck with a PC that has an HD DVD player in it.. The studio support just isnt there to justify this type of expense. Why throw good $$ at a bad situation?

If you can get HP along side dell supporting BD then forget it.. These two companies are the 2 largest computer mfg.

I cant see how putting HD DVD players in their laptops is really going to help anything. Anyway, Blu-ray drives are going in MacBook PROs now. (rumor but most people agree we will see them at Macworld)

There are some movies in HD DVD that probably will never see the light of day on blu even if/when their studios go neutral.

Titles like Enemy at the Gates, The Jackal, The Jerk, and The Frighteners immediately come to mind.

But thanks to some really bad management calls, they're headed to the musuem with the Atari ST and the Sega Dreamcast.
