Toshiba is now expected to further promote installation of HD-DVD drives in personal computers, targeting users who watch movies on their PCs, the Nikkei business daily said.

"The core of its turn-around plan is to capture those who watch DVDs on personal computers, a popular practice in the United States," the newspaper said.

Good luck with that. If that's their counter-attack, no wonder they lost. Why are the best products always marketed by morons and supplanted by the worse one with more money ?

If the Nikkei business daily is right Toshiba might as well give up now since in my opinion that isn't going to work.

How many people do you know bought a DVD drive in their laptops because they wanted to watch DVD movies on it? :D

Remember Raw Deal? Arnie states: "Resign or be prosecuted". Toshiba should resign gracefully instead of pretending. I guess prosecuted is comparable to being made a laughingstock of.

I frequently use mine for that. I've had DVD drives in my laptops for at least 6 years now. I've traveled quite a bit for work and being able to watch a movie in the hotel room, in the airport, or on the plane is quite nice.

Not gonna be much interest in this from the average shopper/dvd watcher standpoint...mainly techies, business folks, and frequent fliers etc.

Not sure about laptops, but HTPCs are very, very popular.

Yes, but did those people buy a DVD drive in their laptops to watch movies, or do they watch movies on the laptops because they bought a DVD drive?

I would suggest that DVD drives are standard in laptops and people just watch movies on them because they can. I dont think very many people actually buy a DVD drive for their laptops just so they can watch movies on them.

I think you guys are missing an important poing. One of the biggest advantages of the hi-def formats is the resolution and how awesome it looks on a big screen. What would be the point of watching hi-def content on a laptop that odds are doesn't support 1080 resolution? I saw a similarly stupid idea a few months ago from the blu-ray camp when a manufacturer introduced an in-dash blu-ray player for the car. And the average joe, i suspect, doesn't bother hooking his laptop up to a big screen to get the full effect of better resolution. Just my 2 cents

Sorry, we don't talk about rumors either. Let's wait for press releases.
