hello,
the bulb in my new HC1500 (80 hrs) exploded a couple of days ago. I contacted Mitsubishi and I am getting a new lamp from them under warranty. my question is: are there others who have had this happen to their projectors? if so, does this reoccur after bulb replacement, or is this strictly fault of the particular bulb? can projector damage occur in such explosions? Thanks in advance for input.

I think you will find that the new bulb will last longer than 80 hours. Unless there was a failure with the projector's cooling system (fan), the variable was in the bulb. Some bulbs will last three times their life expectancy and other bulbs will fail within hours or even minutes.

It happens, not often but it can.
You are talking about a quartz lamp that starts out at about 100 to 200 psi and when it get lit, it will go up to 2000psi and several hundred degrees. If the bulb has been touched and has oil on it or if it has been used off and on briefly over and over or cooled for too long after each usage, the lamp could be prematurely weakened.
Manufacturing defects can also lead to a quick sudden death and this is why you usually get at least a 90 day warranty.

I have HC1500 with 115 hrs in low lamp mode.
No problems so far.
I have mine mounted on a celing beam with good ventilation all around.
