Posted this in the router thread but thought I might get a quicker response in a seperate thread.............New PS3 owner. I have a Netgear WGR614 v.6 with the latest firmware update and CAN NOT get this thing to work properly with the PS3's wifi. I can get online but have painfully slow web browsing, constant media server errors, and lots of inconsistencies with the connection. I can test the internet connection and it will work five times in a row, then test it again and it will fail. I am also unable to register on the PS network. The setup pages take forever to load and eventually I wind up with something like a server error, or unable to connect to server and all progress is lost. I use a laptop and also a Roku soundbridge on the wireless network and both work beautifully. When I setup the network on the PS3(done this a million times already) the PS3 sees the network with a 100% signal strength. Havent tried hard wiring because router is in another room. Gone through every router setting imaginable and still can't get this thing to go. A call to Sony tech support (of course) is useless as they wont even take the call due to "high volume" or whatever excuse they had. Anybody got any ideas? I am somewhat familiar with the router terminology.

I have seen people with various routers complaining about wifi drop-outs. i would suggest you check that the router is not trying to do and DPI (a.k.a statefull packet inspection). you could also check the routers logs to see if it is abnormally terminating the connection.
Are you using WPA with TKIP or AES? (try switching to AES)
Are you using b,g,n or mixed mode? (try setting to 802.11g)
Are you using a frequency or channel that could be getting interference from another device (or neighbors) ? (try another channel)

Also i always suggest that people use the ethernet port rather than the wireless if possible, if the PS3 is a long distance from the router you shoud get a pair of Netgear Powerline ethernet adapters. This is what i use (got it on sale at BB) and it was fast as hell, plug-n-play and really gets over the hassle of signal loss and dropouts.
Do yourself a favor, get powerline ethernet and save your sanity!

Actually, I am using WEP, but I guess I could change it to WPA, just didn't think that would make a difference with this problem. I am set at b and g and I thought about trying to change the channel but I never had a problem with 2 other wireless devices(laptop and Roku soundbridge) using the current wireless settings so I didnt think that would really make a difference. Stange thing is, the Roku Soundbride sits right above the PS3 in the same room and works fine on this wireless network. Makes it hard to understand why the PS3 woundn't?

I've had the same issue with my Linksys. I just changed it to G-Only and changed the channel to 1 or 6. I haven't had any issues since.

I just tried G only and still have problems. Its weird because I can test the internet connection on the PS and it will succeed and then I go to the web browser and pull up a page and then I can't get any more pages to load or if they do it takes forever. Then I go back to the internet test and it will either succeed or sometimes fail. But my laptop and soundbridge both work wirelessly in the same room no problem. Is the PS3's wifi basically JUNK? I am baffled:mad:
Sure would be nice if Sony would take phone calls from tech support(although I know that is basically a waste of time)

I would not call the PS3's wireless crap, just somewhat weak, but what i will say is that "some" people have reported the same problem that you are experiencing.
I strongly suggest that you investigate powerline ethernet:
http://netgear.com/Products/PowerlineNetworking/PowerlineEthernetAdapters/XE104.aspx

The link above is the one i have , no configuration needed (except if you need encryption....don't).
Absolutely no flaws, and it is fast as hell when streaming files.

So, I go through the menu's and when it prompts for the WAP key I do not have any clue how to enter numbers / letters with the controller. I have my network encrypted. So the PS3 sees the wireless link ... but I cannot get it to connect....

Can anyone help .. please??

TIA

The powerline seems like a nice product, but a little too expensive. Hell, I'll go through the trouble of hard wiring the PS connection before I spend 200(or just give up on the online connection.) Its got to be something else because even though my router is in a different room, its not more than 12 feet from the PS and the signal strength is consistently 100%
I wonder if it would even work if I ran a wired line from the router to the PS? At this point, I am not so sure......

Just a side note, but I think if you change to G only on your router, then your soundbridge won't work anymore. I believe those are B only devices. I found that out when setting up my soundbridge.

You are correct about the soundbridge being B only. Anyway, I decided to go ahead and tuff it out and run an ethernet cable under the house and up to where the PS3 is. Problem solved and not only do I have zero connection problems, but the speed is twice what it was with wireless(when that would actually work) Now that I have gone through the trouble of hard wiring, its not a big deal anymore but its still a shame that the PS3's wireless didn't want to play nice with my router when all other devices on the wireless network do:rolleyes:
You pay for the wireless function as one of the benefits of the PS3, and then it doesn't work as it should. What a shame.

I had the same issues with my D-Link DIR-655. I'm not a novice at this and I tried every setting possible (DMZ, Static IP, Firmware update, Lower MTU, disable UPnP, etc.) to get the PS3 to stop dropping the WiFi signal. Finally I just set the PS3 up through a WiFi bridge, problem solved. Also, I have 5 other wireless devices (2 laptops, Wii, XBox 360, PC) and none of them have issues.

Took me all day to troubleshoot the issue when I got my 80gig.
I have the DIR-655 also, I coudln't connect by either wireless or ethernet. Finally I disconnected everything and updated it with the latest firmware from D-Link and when I hooked the PS3 up first I got connected both by wireless and by ethernet after testing them out.

Did you update the D-Link with the latest firmware update.

Yes, I have the latest firmware. I get connected just fine using the PS3 WiFi but the problem is it will drop every 20 seconds or so. For me, the bridge was the best solution for the problem since it never drops. Since many people are having this issue Sony might come up with a firmware update. It's posted all over the Sony PS3 forums.

Belkin hasn't given me a bit of trouble, been a nice router so far.

I just tried one more thing. I moved the PS3 to a vertical position and off my metal stereo receiver. I haven't had a drop in an hour. I don't know if it is the vertical position because sometimes a wireless antenna gets better reception if it's pointing in a certain direction or if the metal stereo receiver caused interference. I'll keep you posted if it has any drops. I am using all default settings on the PS3 and on the Router except a static IP is set.

Pretty sure it's WEP only, too. I ended up running CAT-5 so I could dump WEP, which on implementation alone (not counting how flawed it is for security) cuts Wifi throughput in half.

Can't imagine why anyone would want to run WEP if other options are available.

I have the same router and gave up on the wireless stuff. I have a zune that i set up to sync wirelessly and it would work for a few and then kick it. But now I have a Playstation3 and trying to run it wired i still have problems. I can access the store and all just fine. I have downloaded several demos with no problem. But I am trying to access my computer as a media server and I keep getting kicked. It will sometimes start the connection, then drop it a few moments into a video. Any ideas. I have never had any luck with routers.

After a day of playing BF:BC on the PS3 Thursday just gone, I lost network connection Thursday evening (connecting via wireless). Since then I've not been able to get back on the Playstation Network. Tried a laptop over the weekend, can see the ssid of mine and all the other networks around me and WILL connect, but not able to view webpages. However (and this is the weird bit...) my desktop PC which is wired to the ADSL/Wireless gateway router has full access no problems, but when I try to connect either the playstation of laptop using the SAME cables (to avoid a cable issue etc...) it still fails!!! Checked the encryption keys of wirless network, IP address assignments on DHCP, tried setting to static IP's, checked the DNS addresses supplied by ISP (PIPEX) I've even got my neighbor involved and tried my PS3 on his network via wifi which works no problems. He's tried connecting to my network and can do so without issue!! I even went to the trouble of buying a new router setup just in case (old one netgear, new one d-link), no change, exactly the same problem.

Can anyone suggest ANYTHING before i drop kick the entire lot out of the top floor window!!!???!?!!
