So... who has any guesses as to what he's going to address?

So far all I can really think of is the XBox Ultimate rumor.

I really don't know, I have a lot of things flying in my head. With the recent announcement of Warner going Blu exclusively its hard to tell.
-Maybe the Ultimate with IPTV etc.....
-Maybe a Blu-ray add-on or something to do with Blu-Ray
-And to be honest it MAY be a whole new console....

You may ask why the third thing, but remember there was only FOUR years between the launch of Xbox and the 360. We are going into the 3rd year of the , so a launch of a new console could be within a year or year and a half. I doubt this BUT anything is possible from MS and with this being Bill's last keynote as the "main" man it could be ANYTHING!!

If he announces the 360s successor I'm gonna be PISSED! If he announces a 360 with a built-in HD-DVD drive I'm gonna laugh. And if it has anything to do with Blu-Ray I will first exclaim "WHAAAAT!?!?!?" and THEN laugh my ass off.

Personally I'd love to hear him say, "We're killing Vista because it's a pile of **** and now present you with our latest build of Windows built from the ground up based on Unix". That's not gonna happen of course but it would be awesome if it did.

I think it will be something around IPTV. MS is really trying to take over the living room. Not too sure about a new console though. Maybe in a few years.

Side Note - Come on :) Vista aint bad. XP was like this for the first little while too. Wait until quad-cores are more affordable and I think Vista's premise will start to shine.

Side Note 2 - I just installed VMWare to run Ubuntu under Vista. Looks promising. I am somewhat familiar from back in the Unix days in my first job, so I am looking forward to playing. Looks solid so far.

I'll go with the IPTV thing too.

A new console is a definite possibility given Microsoft's track record with the xbox. Holiday 09 is not out of the question. But, I think it will actually be holiday 2010.

Yea, but I shouldn't need a quad-core just to get my computer to the point where applications (games in particular) will function like they did in XP because the OS is eating system resources in an attempt to make everything look pretty when in reality it just looks like the confusing convoluted mess of a Unicorn having just vomited a rainbow onto your desktop. Maybe my tone will change in time, perhaps I'm just bitter that the OS I have grown so accustomed to after all these years is going away. Regardless until Vista gets patched so it doesn't have the compatibility issues with older software it has now, and stops sucking up system memory and processing power like it's going out of style I'll be sticking to my OSX/XP combo.

An announcement of the 360 successor, while possible, is not likely. The reason that the xbox and the 360 were only 4 years apart was because the xbox was simply used for entry into the market. They never intended it to have a full/long life. There is no reason that the 360 shouldn't have a full and happy life. Hell, the games are just starting to use the full power of the system.

Then again, it's just an announcement. I'm not sure how far in advance they generally announce game systems. However, you are probably looking at 2+ years for the next system from Microsoft. There are plenty of games to be made for the 360... along with price drops, etc... before a new system is brought to market. They have the advantage over Sony and Nintendo in that their current gen system had a head start. They probably will use the fact that they are ahead (time wise) so that they can again be ahead next gen. The next system is no doubt in development (probably was since the release of the 360 if not before), but I doubt they would bother to make a CES announcement about it.

They had some pretty impressive facts and figures for sales that I hadn't heard yet. I'll try to google them to make sure I get them right.

Edit: NM, I don't want to get into a sales discussion.

So pretty much zero announcements on the game side of things, and Vista is a still a system resource whore. But those Windows Live apps were really cool. So was that Windows Touch business.

No big Console announcement really. IPTV but not for the US.

Wonder IF the Ultimate with an HD-DVD drive was true and the scrapped it last minute because of Warner??? Just a thought

Very disappointed in the fact of not really a mention of anything Media Center related, I'm very interested in the mediaroom(iptv) idea and wandering if that will replace the HTPC
Also no mention of the DirectTV tuner card or the merger

"3.5 Billion in business during November, more than Nintendo and Playstation combined"

17.7 Million Xbox 360’s shipped to date

Fixed. He definately took the Sony approach and said shipped.

One of the things I found interesting was that Window's Vista is on 100 million PCs. Maybe that will somehow give MS a little incentive to get out a SP2 equivalent Christ-like savior patch for this OS.

Yes didn't see that. I just copied what was typed I know it has been stated since yesterday they announce SHIPPED rather than sold.

Wonder IF the Ultimate with an HD-DVD drive was true and the scrapped it last minute because of Warner??? Just a thoughtStrongly doubt it. It's possible that MS had considered something like the "Ultimate" only if HD-DVD had shown stronger sales over the last year.

Even if the Warner announcement hadn't been made, I doubt MS would take such a big gamble without having a stronger assurance that the format would succeed. Say, for example, some major BD-R backers had announced that they were shifting to HD-DVD, then we could expect a new 360 sku with a built-in HD-DVD drive.

That isn't to say it won't still happen, but it's looking more and more remote a possibility. Since Bill's speech focused so much on downloadable content, though, I'm betting the focus has been far away from HD-DVD for some time.

The news of the Ultimate was based on a NeoGAF thread back in August titled, get this, "You wouldn't believe what my gamestop employee told me. (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=179462)" (8/12/07)

(8/13/07) http://stuff.tv/news/xbox-360-ultimate-in-the-pipeline/default.aspx
The source is fairly ropey – staff at Gamestop in the US have apparently spotted a stock code – so we wouldn’t bet our grandmother on it, but it would make sense.

i was hoping for much more on the xbox360 front.

i can understand xbox is like an atom for microsoft. but still it would have been nice to see something special coming out from bill gates.

new live features for xbox360, new hdi features, more about XNA development or integration, voice recognition that is used in the ford cars, also used in xbox360. anything.

instead i just get some shipped sales numbers and how well business is going for microsoft. like we all didn't know that.

Maybe we'll hear something big at GDC. Video games are generally an afterthought at CES.
