What the hell is going on here? They can't deliver the 5000 and announce the 5500. At least Panasonic waited about 35 days until releasing the BD30. At the time, i thought Panasonic was screwing the BD10a owners....I guess not.

Actually though, to my understanding, the 5500 will not have analog out, nor will it have the HQV chip. As far as i'm concerned, i'm keeping the 5000 and praying that Samsung doesn't let us down. I'll at least wait until the 30th. I hate to give up the 5000 and possibly not having the ability to replace it with another 5000, only to learn that in order to fully utilize the new 5500, i have to buy a new receiver....

I walked into my Best Buy a couple weeks ago and they had 2 stacks 3 high (6) of the 5000's on the bottom shelf but no demo units. I was tempted but it was too much for a combo player. If the 5500 comes out in May, I might keep an eye out on discounts on the 5000 since I need the analog outs for the present time.

According to the Press Release posted at Gizmodo "The BD-UP5500 will be available in the second-half of 2008."

did you pay 999? Go to the red big box retailer and print out their BD-UP5000. It is 799.

Given how closely they hit the date on the 5000, I'm guessing the 5500 will show up just before Christmas. ;)

Do yourself a favor: Call ABT Electronics on the phone and ask them for their bottom line price. I will only say that I payed closer to $600 than $700 for the Sammy 5000 and they sold me a 4 year warranty for only $49. They have the best customer service in the business by far and they won't let you down. Be persistent and keep asking for a better price if they quote you around $675. It will probably help to add the warranty as well.

I love this place and those of you not from Chicagoland owe yourself a trip if you're ever in town. All my gear that Abt carries is from there. I just wish they would expand their audio lines. Even their appliance section is amazing. They also have a mobile audio section which now sports a wakeboarding boat with a great audio system.

I was there yesterday picking up one of the last KDS-A603000s. Listed at $1898 I got it for $1650 and 4yr warranty for $200.

Lastly, it's Abt, not ABT, named after the owner.

I stopped at a Best Buy today to purchase a 5000 and yes, they did raise the price to $999 and to make things worse they told me that it didn't qualify for their current 10 free BD promotion (5 in store, 5 from rebate) even though their advertising states any Blu-ray Disc player with small print excluding the PS3 and PC drives, so I left empty handed :(

That's BS, this unit is NOT worth $999 and they better be giving any discs that fall under the promotion unless explicitly stated it doesn't qualify. Wasn't the MSRP dropped to $799 anyway? They price match, so no reason why they should be demanding more.

Look at the small print #5, which clearly states that it excludes universal BD & HD-DVD players. I bought mine 12/26/07 (for $799 less 10% coupon) & tried to get the 5 free BDs showing them my receipt & the mgr pointed out the exclusion. BB did raise the price on 12/28/07 so I bought before the increase. I wouldn't have bought it, if it was $999 - since everyone else is selling it for $799 (or less in the case of Abt).

The street price for these seems to be well over MSRP at the moment (look at ebay). That's probably why B&M shops aren't in any hurry to drop their prices from $999.
