View Full Version : Anybody in Vegas.......Samsung Booth 5000
dlgreen561 01-07-08, 12:00 AM As i am sure that there are many in Vegas that patrol these boards, many of us would certainly appreciate it if you would be kind enough to ask a few of the higher ups at the Samsung booth about the possibility of a firmware upgrade. (Most specifically concerning the audio codecs of course).
Thanks in advance...

I am sure many of us are waiting for some sort of statement from Samsung, indicating that they will be standing behind the 5000, and will correct not only the audio issues, but enable profile 1.1 support and fix the playback compatability issues as well.
We need some sort of assurance that BD-UP5000 owners, will not be left in the wake of the 5500, without which, the resellers may face a massive amount of returns over the coming weeks.

XBRSteve 01-07-08, 07:32 PM I will be at the show on Wens and Thursday but surely there are some there now that have info. We should hear something tonight.
dlgreen561 01-09-08, 11:48 AM firmware update for audio codecs? 1.1? other small issues?
Thanks...

Guys, I made my way back to the Samsung booth again today.
A few things I'll point out after my revisit to the booth this afternoon:
1) The placards under the 1500 and 5500 have been changed. They now ONLY indicate Profile 1.1 and that it's a Blu-Ray player, and the 5500 also indicates HD DVD & Blu-Ray. This is ALL that they say now...(Sorry, no camera with me at the time)
2) I overheard a very knowledgable marketing person having a discussion with a client. The 1500 and 5500 will be profile 1.1 after a firmware update, which supposedly will come after shipment, due in May. They will NOT be profile 2.0 capable. They will both have all audio codecs enabled, i.e. TrueHD, DTS-MA Multichannel, etc.
3) Confirming what I heard yesterday, The BD-UP6500, due in October, will have REON, Profile 2.0, and HDDVD/Blu-Ray capability, as well as all expected Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA capabilities. This is the true upgrade from the 5000, while the 5500 is considered a step down as the REON is absent in the 5500.
4) the 5500 I saw running in the demo was running LPCM 7.1 over HDMI to the Samsung receiver, from a TrueHD source, i.e. decoded on the player.
5) the 1500 that I indicated looked like a mock-up, was a true unit today, and was powered up on the display. Not sure if I was mistaken, or they made a change to the display from yesterday.
6) and this one...I don't want to type, and I want you to take it for what it's worth... After standing around the booth waiting for someone who knew some answers, they put me in contact with a marketing person who told me that the BD-UP5000 would NOT be updated to multichannel TrueHD or DTS-MA. He stated that there was a hardware issue, indirectly implying to me that it was a Broadcom issue, and that he was sorry to give me the news. I truly hope that he was mistaken, but he was convincing enough to me that he knew what he was talking about. And, I would think that if someone made this statement, they would not be mistaken.
If I think of anything else, I'll post again...
Someone PLEASE get an official statement from Samsung on this.

woah woah woah, hold up. how can they get away with releasing a 1.0 player that will only be 1.1 after a later firmware update? ok, i can see how they made the case when the 5000 was postponed until after the october 2007 deadline, but the 5500 isn't coming out until mid 2008.
as for the rumor of multichannel lossless never being fixed.... WOW  i'm furious and i didn't even end up buying the thing. i've been a happy samsung customer in the past but this has really killed their image in my view. i intend on buying a combo player someday but it will only be after reading damn good reviews, no more promises of firmware updates to deliver what should have been available at release as dictated on the manufacturers own spec sheet. even then it will take a lot for me to choose samsung over competitors.
Nasty N8 01-09-08, 01:37 PM That is total crap to release a unit half assed. This company needs to get tit together.

I also find it very hard to believe that the announced 5500 would not be shipped as profile 1.1 without a firmware update, so I'm taking that statement as rumor until we hear additional confirmation from Samsung.
I am hoping that those in attendence at CES 2008 will try and pin down some higher-ups in the Samsung booth and put these rumors to rest and allows to either return our units, or give us something to look forward to in the coming months (a fix).
Rightonbeat 01-09-08, 02:13 PM I went to CES yesterday, and it was very obvious that samsung R&D people, Product Specialist, and anyone who really knows whats going on....... were avoiding the area where the 5000 was on display... Alot of people were standing by the 5000 and waiting and looking for someone to come around to talk to.
I watched for nearly a half hour, listening to conversations and people trying to get some attention.
They had a lady in the area, who I could tell , didnt know anything, but I approached any way.... I asked what was the timeline for a promised firmware update, etc..
she said she heard about something by the end of January.. I asked what that entails, she said she didnt know.. I asked about the audio, I asked about hearing from other Reps that they werent doing anything,, or possibly not till may , when they release the 5500,... she didnt know anything.. I asked can you please send someone over here who knows anything,,, I even said there was a man named Lee who had some answers.. she never heard of him... She brought a guy over named Troy.. I ran everything by him,, told him they should be visiting this Forum because there are alot of dissatisfied 5000 owners, and most would be returning this player.
He had no answers. I asked when and if these issues were going to be addressed. He said we have nothing specific on this at this time... bla bla...He said he would like to underpromise and over deliver. I said isnt there anyone here who can really give me details.. I would like to re assure people on this forum of any good news.. most of them dont live in Vegas, so I am trying to get them information...... meanwhile there are a few people listining in... he says everyone is with people with their other products.... I sent said thanks and walked awy... I watched as I left and saw him talking with a few other reps, I could tell they were talking about the 5000.... and of course as I continued watching they all steered clear of the 5000 display....
Sorry .. I tried but,, cant squeeze blood out of a turnip..

This basically tells me they don't want to talk about it. Otherwise they'd not all be hiding in the back room. Crap. I still have a couple weeks to wait before I have to return it, and if I do, I have to buy something else. Or accept this as a $750 transition box. OTOH, I have no idea if anyone will ever deliver a DF player with the features this one promised. The 6500 seems like vaporware right now. Crap.
acidrock69 01-09-08, 02:41 PM great work rightonbeat, its good to see people trying to call them out even if nothing is learned. in this case silence speaks volumes. i like how the guy said he'd rather 'under promise', considering i haven't heard anything, period. the fact they are avoiding the 5000 display in order to dodge questions is very unprofessional.
i hope electronic review sites report this fiasco to bring attention to this rather than leave it to avs posters. i also hope the samsung reps at CES are reading this and can do SOMETHING about it by getting samsung to address customer concerns.
SpenceJT 01-09-08, 02:52 PM You know I'm not usually the optimistic type, but CES is all about 'new' product.
Why would a company go to all of the effort and expense, to out of it's way to address a product already in release at a show that is primarilly intended to introduce new product?
I'm not trying to get flamed here, but I am trying to provide some 'sliver' of rationale behind what 'may' (conjecture) be going on.
I say 'may' because I am stuck here in America's Dairy Land where in the past seven days we have experienced single digit temps, record setting snow, temps reaching the 50 degree mark, fog you can cut with a knife, thunder storms, tornados, and once again light snow flurries!
If the weather can do all that in a week, I'm hoping that Samsung can come through for us.

tostitobandito 01-09-08, 03:11 PM The thing is, the 5000 is a new product. It's hasn't even really had a wide release yet (just starting to be available in the mainstream as CES was starting). It's supposed to be their latest and greatest player and I'd fully expect them to be pimping it at CES. Instead, they seem to be pretending it never happened and moving on to other things.

Bingo, this is exactly what I think is happening. They made an opps, and are trying to cover it by announcing 2 new players 3 weeks after their "flagship" played starting shipping.
Charles R 01-09-08, 04:47 PM CES is a trade show and as such by nature the reps will try to avoid consumers. They aren't there to address their questions or concerns. Rather they are there to enhance their dealer channel. And no the biggest concern of their dealers isn't if and when this player will receive a firmware update.

You are absolutely right but this will however be a very unpopular view.:)
delrmx01 01-09-08, 05:06 PM I'll probably end up getting a standalone BR player to go along with the XA2. I was planning on selling the XA2 and purchasing a DF player but without this being resolved, this leaves me in a pickle.
The information I received from Samsung reps I was talking to after my semi-private Samsung front projector demo was that future firmware updates were in process and should come out in the first quarter, but that they were unable to discuss the change list of what the update would include.
Those sort of things are always subject to change of course and the final QC testing could push everything back, but it seems a firmware update is in progress and Samsung is aware of the issues raised in this thread.
No promises though.

If you ask a question with a clue like " I own a XX" defensive shields go up and you get generic answers when if the same question was raised a dealer retailer or channel support issue, you can get directed to the guy in the booth who might know the answer or get a contact who does.
Samsung booth was huge and most staff don't know many details on the nuances of most individual products, especially those not being featured.
Lack of a good answer does not mean one is not in progress.
I think its a good bet that Samsung firmware support for all of its HDM players will be very good.
I did have a reason to ask about that players future firmware support in that context and the answer I got was that firmware was under development and was going to be fully supported.

New firmware now available.
Told you so! :D:) ;)
Seriously, glad the firmware is now available for this unit. I hope it solves your issues.
