Basically a n00b question but...is there a meter (like a voltage tester) that I can buy to allow me to go around to each of my speaker jacks and confirm that they are working?

I had my house pre-wired for speakers two years ago (see my other thread) and I am in the early stages of putting my HT together. I wanted to go around to each of the jacks (5.1) and insure that the wiring is intact allowing good signal flow. My thought was if there was a piece of equipment (relatively cheap mind you since it is a one time thing) that I attach to the main tie-in where the receiver will be and then go around to each jack to make sure they work. I've used similar devices for Cat5e and of course electrical. I used the "delbert" method for the cable coax when I moved in by lugging a small TV around to each cable outlet.

Anyway, looking for advice...thanks in advance!

Just use a digital multimeter.

Maybe just plug the receiver in, play some multi-channel stuff, and use a small speaker?

Attach a 9 volt battery to one and and use your tongue on the other.

I use a battery powered CD player at one end and headphones at the other.
