prophetizer 05-01-08, 02:44 PM Wow. Thanks to Wopino I have all the images needed to test on my new set coming soon. And to think that I had Samsung repair the issue with the ((()))
marks on my screen. That seems to be the least of my concerns after running those test images. I ALSO HAD THE PINK V!!!! Not sure if it was before or after all the repairs. Seems like I also have a bit of tilt from left to right. Does it look within tolerance? I can see the whole number 2 on the left side of the screen but can only see half of it on the right side. On the reflection image what am I looking for? I am guessing the reflecting light bleeding into the black bar right? Also it looks like my covergence is off right? Should I be seeing green and red in the white grid lines? Sorry for such large pictures but I wanted the pictures to be as close up as possible.

where do u obtain the test images?
jhferry 05-01-08, 02:47 PM So you're telling me "authorized" vendors are still classified as "vendors" but "unathorized" vendors are classified as "consumers."
Yet in reality, both are still "resellers" of boxed, brand new Samsung equipment. Why couldn't I argue with Samsung stating I am the original consumer that bought the unit brand new??
I bought my set from buy.com, they are not an official authorized dealer. I called Samsung before hand and asked them about it and they said no problem, its a new set period.
If you bought it off ebay, was a person or a storefront you got it from? If it was a store front you may be able to just get a receipt from them.
jhferry 05-01-08, 02:52 PM If they were a dealer, you are technically the original owner as long as you can provide a receipt showing it was bought new.
jhferry 05-01-08, 02:56 PM The only thing that is a grey area is this:
THIS LIMITED WARRANTY SHALL NOT EXTEND TO ANYONE OTHER THAN THE ORIGINAL PURCHASER OF THIS PRODUCT, IS NONTRANSFERABLE AND STATES YOUR EXCLUSIVE REMEDY.
However on that page it makes no mention of having to buy from an authorized dealer to be covered. TO me this reads as If the set was bought used so long as you can provide paperwork I think your fine. First call the person you bought from to see what kind of receipt you can get. Samsung may have a no ebay policy but again, that isnt listed either. You can also download the manual and see if there is anything in there.
Edit: manual says to look at the warranty card. I will look at it when I get home.
Peja439I6 05-01-08, 03:02 PM where do u obtain the test images?
I got them from Wopino but if you pm me your email address I will send them to you.
alvindd 05-01-08, 03:05 PM I would like to see if the "pink v" exists on the 750's.
My 750 will be delivered Tuesday.
Charles R 05-01-08, 03:13 PM No it doesn't say you have to purchase from an authorized dealer to be covered. But it does state you have to be the original purchaser and there is no way to be the original purchaser if you didn't. None.
Now will they deny you warrantee service because you purchased the set from an unauthorized dealer? I don't have a clue. I do know other companies have in the past... I have first-hand experience.
Also just like tech support one person from the company may tell you one thing and another something totally different. It would have to be in writing before I felt comfortable.
VvNeo2000vV 05-01-08, 03:14 PM where i got the 50A650 there are selling the 56 for 1275 i would have gotten it but its too big it sucks 50 is big enough for me
CyberCT 05-01-08, 03:17 PM where i got the 50A650 there are selling the 56 for 1275 i would have gotten it but its too big it sucks 50 is big enough for me
Wish I could have knew that yesterday. I paid more than that. And to think the B&M stores are charging almost double what you could get that TV for.
cstrasz 05-01-08, 03:27 PM I'm not sold yet on the whole 120hz technology, but I noticed that it's significantly more prominent on the LCD's than on DLP's. Is this a shared observation or just something that was set differently on the Samsung DLP's I've seen?
I also did not see any option for setting the 120hz mode on/off on the Samsung but maybe I missed it. Is that toggleable?

120Hz is not what's causing the "weird" 3-Dish look you see on LCD's. It is their motion enhancement technology. This is not included in the DLP's because it has a much faster response time so doesn't need it. Out displays always do 120Hz image processing, which lets us do judder free 24 frames per second film, true 3D viewing with the glasses, etc.
theranman 05-01-08, 03:34 PM Prophetizer, was it really necessary to repost that entire set of huge images just to ask a 7 word question?

Oh okay. I've had it all wrong then :) I've always thought it was the 120hz that made the motion look so unnatural in some of these demos (like Pirates of the Carribean - looked like a documentary!). I guess that's the motion enhancement. So what exactly does the 120hz do? I'll have to look it up.
sodaboy581 05-01-08, 03:53 PM So what exactly does the 120hz do? I'll have to look it up.
As far as I know there's only two benefits of 120hz:
1. 120(hz) / 24(fps) = 5... which means for native FILM video you should get 0 judder and the panning etc the way it was meant to be seen.
2. Some 120hz sets have an option where they insert a black frame between each video (60fps) frame... this supposedly makes the image smear less on your eye and scrolling text, movement, etc looks better on it.
Wow that's pretty cool.
btw, $1,877 is the price I'm seeing on their site now with "Only 1 left in stock - order soon" :)
I see it for $1849 from Big River but....and a big but....it is shipped from and sold by "Electronics Expo". Price does not include shipping...looks like they charge $1.25 per pound?!?!
Sgooter 05-01-08, 04:45 PM Well, today I pulled the trigger on the 61" 750 from BB; used the 10% coupon in the moving coupons pkg from USPS. The 750 should be delivered/picked up by next Wednesday. Also bought (used another 10% coupon) the Panasonic blu-ray player, which is getting hard to find in stock.
Once the 750 is up and running, I plan to give it about 2 weeks to either eliminate or confirm my concerns about off-axis viewing limits. I've never had a rear projection TV before, and I'm optimistic that this will turn out fine.
If not, then I'll go back to plasma.
VvNeo2000vV 05-01-08, 05:02 PM I ordered fron thehighdefinitionstore.com they seem to have good prices and so far everything has been ok then seem nice i had no problem changing my order to the 50A650 when i realized that a 61" was way too big. free shipping no tax i ordered monday changed my order and still recieving it tomorrow. I could have had it today but i couldnt get off work today.
wavepelt 05-01-08, 05:06 PM Has anyone tried to use PC in the pip window. Does it work. Is it easy to do?
I've had my A750 running for a week now and have not noticed any issues with viewing. It's a damn good set!
Bill
Has anyone tried to use PC in the pip window. Does it work. Is it easy to do?
No. Analog cable or antenna in the PIP window only.
Kaga Sakai 05-01-08, 08:07 PM After my HLR junked out, Best Buy switched it out with a new HL56A650 which I picked up today. After borrowing a friends truck to get it home and hooking it all up, I noticed something on the right side of the screen. It almost looks like a line drawn with pencil, about an inch long, which I discovered is acutually under the screen. This obviously won't fly with me (my wife thinks I'm crazy), so do you think that Best Buy will just switch it out for me? Has anyone had experience with them and returns of this nature?

Did you open up the "circle" panels on the side to clean it? give that a shot

Thanks Bill,
Your comments are certainly reassuring.

FWIW, over the past week I've shopped at 5 different BB stores across central FL, and each time I purposely asked at the returns desk about their return policy on HDTV and Blu-Ray players. In every case they all said you have 30 days in which to return these items for refund, exchange, etc. They all promised me no hassles if I need to return anything for any reason within the first 30 days. The fine print on the sales receipt confirms this policy, and is the same as is written on placards on the wall behind the customer service/returns counter. If I wanted an exchange, they would first charge me the price for the new TV including any delivery, then credit my card back for the price of the defective TV once it has been returned to the store. If you have them deliver the replacement, then they will take the bad one back, and you should have the return credited back on the same day.
Based on that info and the condition of your set, I suggest you call BB to explain the line on your screen and see what solutions they offer you. In fact, you might try to push them for free delivery of the replacement TV. For you this is probably a unique experience and a little stressful. On the other hand, it seems the folks in BB deal with problematic returns every day, so for them it's routine. In essence, during the first 30 days, the return policy enables you to call the shots almost anyway you want. After the 30 days, you don't have much leverage.
Good Luck
Kaga Sakai 05-01-08, 10:41 PM Did you open up the "circle" panels on the side to clean it? give that a shot
*Smacks forehead* So THAT is what those little panels are for! Seriously though, I tried this, and I end up pulling a 1 1/4" hair off the back of my screen (Yuck!). Problem solved, and I am very relieved! If I could, I'd buy you a beer.

This is also good to know for future purchases at BB. I'm glad in this case however, I won't have to exercise it.
Thanks again to you both for the tips.
Peja439I6 05-01-08, 11:11 PM Much to my surprise my 61A750 was delivered today and so far I do not notice any issues with it except for the light reflection on the black bar when watching movies which does not bother me too much. The build on my set is 3/08. I will have to keep my fingers crossed.

sweet have you tried the images on ur new 61a750 that i emailed u? I saw the horrendous pics you took of ur old HLT unit...my tv does the same thing i have the hlt5687, that is why samsung is exchanging my set. Also did the trucking company call u ahead of time to verify they were bringing the set?

This really sucks. I swear when the set got here the very first thing I did was pop in the usb stick with those images you sent me and I did NOT see the red " V ". NOW I DO!!! I am really pissed off now. YEs the trucking company did call me about an hour before he got here. Which was weird.

man i wonder if all these sets do that? I dont even wanna test my set when it gets to me...if i see that then im gonna flip!!! I sure don't want a 4th set from Samsung...sorry about ur set man, request a new light engine or a replacement because that is caused by a defective light engine, the samsung engineering department saw my images of the pink V on my hlt and that was their response, they advised my service company to order a new light engine however none exist for the HLT models...so they are giving me the new hl61a750 set.
theranman 05-02-08, 01:18 AM No. Analog cable or antenna in the PIP window only.
Shall I assume that when everything goes digital next February, the PIP feature will be rendered useless, correct?

I am tempted to just live with it since you can't see it unless using the test images. I am tired of dealing with this...
Teknomedic 05-02-08, 03:51 AM Shall I assume that when everything goes digital next February, the PIP feature will be rendered useless, correct?
Yes and no... I'll be corrected if I'm wrong... but I've given this some thought and I see some solutions.
1) If you have Sat or Cable you should be able to still use the PIP
2) If you take the Gov up on their coupon plan you can get a converter for analog TVs... I would assume this would work with sending the correct signal to the PIP as well??
... I'm probably missing something so I'm probably wrong as I never use PIP so I haven't looked into how it's hooked up on these sets.
Bottom line though it was very short sighted for Sammy to not upgrade 2008 models with digital PIP.
VvNeo2000vV 05-02-08, 05:45 AM I hate to argue but who really uses PIP anyway i have it on my cable box and on the TV i currently own and I dont use it. Its a cool feature but now with DVR boxes its useless you can watch one show and record another or record a show and play you video game then later when your done watch the show you just recorded.
NDRugby 05-02-08, 06:27 AM Just noticed HL67A650 went up on crutchfield $2499 with free shipping, and I bet you can get the free stadnd if you call them or go to live chat. Not sure I saw this posted.
Meaning HDTV OTA in PIP?
No video inputs?
No. Analog cable or antenna in the PIP window only.

thats exactly my problem, i just got the test images, but i'm so enjoying the set so far, i don't want to know if there is a problem. i already know there is a tiny slight tilt from left to right, can't tell unless i use an image which i saw on my DVE disc, and slight fuzzy text on the left side of the screen, weird. that does bother me when gaming. maybe i should just do the test, and see, and have a tech out, but i don't want it getting worse lol
RandomHajile 05-02-08, 08:32 AM Meaning HDTV OTA in PIP?
No video inputs?
No, analog only. Analog cable or analog antenna. I suppose you could get a converter box and set it up to output over channel 3 or 4. The interface for changing channels on the PIP isn't great either...I don't use it much, but I'm actually thinking about hooking my VCR back up just for the PIP, so I can change channels on it (and it will still pass the cable signal through for clear QAM).
I am tempted to just live with it since you can't see it unless using the test images. I am tired of dealing with this...

yea im not testing mine...im only gonna put up the grid patterns but not any of the reflection images....because if mine does have a problem and i find out using the test images it is going to ruin my experience and i am too tired of dealing with this!

If BB doesn't price match a store I found(Cleveland Plasma) I will be making a weekend trip up from Pittsburgh to go get me mines.

My new replacement 750 will be here Tuesday.
It looks like 2007 and 2008 Samsung DLPs have the pink v.
Some people just don't notice it.
I almost don't want to do the exchange now.
My HLT6189 has no bowing and the tilt was corrected, only problem is the pink(reddish) v.
I am tempted to just live with it since you can't see it unless using the test images. I am tired of dealing with this...
You can see it on very dark scenes and if someone wearing dark clothing is in the center of the screen.
I've been following the thread here, but somehow lost what the cause of the Pink V is. Anybody?
VvNeo2000vV 05-02-08, 02:20 PM I got my 50A650 today the picture is awesome i cant stop watching it lol no defects that i can see everything is perfect
mitsu50 05-02-08, 02:28 PM Should have posted here, Sorry!
Hi all,
i just got this set last night, and WOW!!!! I'm upgrading from a Mits HD48511, and man the diference is sweet.
a coupld of points, I noticed that when the screen is bright i see a small dark spot which look like something behind the screen? I'm worried because my old Mits was replaced 3 time for it having floaters in the coolant for the lenses, that was projecting spots all over the screen.
Also any idead why the fiber optic from the tv only outputs 2 ch audio? I had it hooked up so that my cable box, xbox 360 and ps3 all used the one optical out from tv so i dont have to change the receiver input. but the dook says if i want 5.1 sound i have to use all separate cables. thanks in advance!
Tony
Sgooter 05-02-08, 02:45 PM Looks like I'm heading back to BB in a few minutes to get an adjustment on the price I paid yesterday for the 750. They just reduced their regular price by $200 - see new price at bb.com
alvindd 05-02-08, 02:49 PM I've been following the thread here, but somehow lost what the cause of the Pink V is. Anybody?
Not sure of the cause, but it's related to the LED engine.
It has caused some of our HLTs to be replaced with the 750.

The TV only outputs 5.1 from OTA signals. The other inputs will be downconverted to 2.0 channels. The manual has more info.

Which set did you get?
mitsu50 05-02-08, 04:39 PM oops, i had the model in my original post, its the HL61A750
i read the book, but i dont understand why they'd give you a optical port, that wont output 5.1 on all sources
tsopranos 05-02-08, 04:52 PM Port St. Lucie in the house :o) I'm in the Torino area...small world.
Looking @ the 67a750 myself
mitsu50 05-02-08, 04:58 PM sure is a small world, i'm near Becker Road.
i got the set @ BB, 24 months no interest, and they through a PS3 in for $150 if i didnt go across the street to CC!!!! :)
Best Buy Price Reduction
Anyone with brick & mortar price guarantee Best Buy just reduced price. I got a $50 refund
from CC. Their guarantee is 60 days for big TVs
Peja439I6 05-02-08, 05:06 PM I know people were talking about the 61a750 having issues outputing 1080p over component and this is true. I can't get my Xbox 360 to work correctly when having it set at 1080p. Only 1080i will work. The screen flickers and the picture comes on and off.

what is the firmware that came with ur set?
tomkat1 05-02-08, 06:04 PM Hey everyone - I've been doing lots of research on which HDTV to buy and have decided to go with the A750 or the 6187. Amazon has the A750 for just under $1900. I'm wondering what to do about a warranty and also which cables do I need to buy?
Thanks so much for any help!
StillwaterTownie 05-02-08, 06:49 PM I didn't get an additional warrenty and not regretting it. You can probably get by with the cables that came with the TV.
It's up to you to look over your equipment, such as a DVD player to decide what cables to get, since I have no idea what you got.
DarthAVS 05-02-08, 06:51 PM Wow....does Samsung make a TV without any problems?
I am a soon to be owner of a 61A750 and I thought everything was going to be ok. Now I see the pink/red "V" problem and I am starting to worry. Has anyone tried adjusting the brightness/contrast, etc, etc to remove or reduce the red V.
Is the V noticeable while watching TV? Is it only on certain sources? Do you see it on HD sources?
I just got Samsung to replace my LNT4071F for one of these sets because of TBE.
TBE=triple ball effect for those not familiar with the problem. This is an issue with all of the LCDs from Samsung with the AMP feature. The only way to not see it is to turn AMP off but that defeats the purpose of getting the TV in the first place.
Oh well, at least my screen size is increasing by 150%
Can anyone recommend/post pictures of any stands they are using for this TV? I need space for an audio receiver, satellite receiver, PS3, XBOX360, and the Wii.
Thanks in advance.
To all of you that are having the Red/Pink problem. It seems to me that it is Chromatic aberration (or lens flaring), which is basically a defect in the lens (grinding) and from what I read when I was having the problem is that the only way to fix is lens replacement. I might be wrong, but I still live with the problem on another device I have, but my color is more like purple fringing. I agree.....just about everything is junk these days, not just TVs. On the other hand if you can build a quality product, you can be number one in the business you are in.
Take Toyota for example. Why are they the number 1 automaker? They are not the cheapest, they don't make flashy bling bling vehicles, they don't have super performance hot rods. They make quality cars that last and don't break down.
I would certainly pay more for a "perfect" bug free product.
Peja439I6 05-02-08, 09:04 PM what is the firmware that came with ur set?
It is version 1004. By the way I contacted Samsung about my issue and they said they will either replace the unit or send someone out to fix it. Wopino, looking at the grid pattern I posted , does it mean my convergence is off? Should i be able to see red and green with the white lines?
cstrasz 05-02-08, 09:34 PM Man, the wait for the 67A750 to come out is killing me. I heard mention on here that Samsung released the previous sizes before the actual release date. How far in advance was that? The official date for 67 is June 1st. I would really love it if it came out the 3rd week or so of this month!
I currently have a slew of games I'm not touching until this set comes in (including GTA 4) cause my current one is having issues. I could be playing it at a friend's but would rather wait :P

i dont know it seems like they all do that to a certain extent both my sets did that and i see the ones in the store doing that too...i dont see it when i am at my normal viewing area tho its only when i am up close...
nineatesix 05-03-08, 01:02 AM Big River, CField, and SRoebuck are now showing $2499 for the 67A750.
shake and bake 05-03-08, 11:23 AM I got this set on an exchange. I had an HL-R5668W that was beautiful in picture but big on problems. Glad I got an extended warranty. By the way the remainder of the warranty was transferred to the new set.
Build on new set = the plastic is more rigid. I would still rather have the input/outputs on the rear of the set. I am missing the independant cable/antenna inputs I used to have. No PIP, used to have my security system camera's hooked up and PIP made it nice. I can live with it though as long as this set is less problematic. I have my fingers crossed. The new set is quieter which is nice. The sound is not so good. Even worse than the HLR if anyone is familiar with that model line. sounds like it's coming from a can no matter the adjustment.
As for picture quality I have yet to tweak it. Right out of the box it's too warm, bright and the sharpness is too high. However picture quality has good potential, especially from Bluray. I have yet to use my copy of DVE and have had this set less than 24 hours so adjustments are necessary as usual. I can see myself satisfied with picture quality. Please do not take all this as a negative review. This set can have a beautiful picture.
If someone was to go out and buy this TV they should be satisfied for the money. However my personal taste would lead me elsewhere. I think this will be my last rear projection DLP. Perhaps DLP manufactures should worry less on "the depth" of the set and more about quality/features in order to compete. All in all it is a nice set. I personaly am ready for something more but my "want" will have to wait until I get a deticated room, but for right now it makes a very nice living room set.
oops, i had the model in my original post, its the HL61A750
i read the book, but i dont understand why they'd give you a optical port, that wont output 5.1 on all sources
The same reason they give you PIP that only does analog? It saved a few cents maybe. Samsung is all talk about targeting RPTV to video junkies like us at AVS.
mtagliaferri 05-03-08, 01:20 PM So i've narrowed it down to the 50A560 or the HLT5089S. Which one would you guys go with. I understand that the 560 is the newer model, and hte 89 is an older discontinued model, but is the LED. Any suggestions?
I will be buying the 61' 750 tv. My question is this will I be able to hook up my pc via the dvi to hdmi hook up to the tv and play .mkv files with no problems or will that cause some issues? Basically it will act like a second display correct?
cosmicvoid 05-03-08, 02:14 PM but i dont understand why they'd give you a optical port, that wont output 5.1 on all sourcesIt has been discussed ad nauseum... the reason all non-OTA sources are down converted to stereo is: DRM requirements.
Sgooter 05-03-08, 07:46 PM Last night I decided not to wait til next Wednesday for the 750 to arrive at my local BB, so I drove to another nearby town to pick one up at the new lower price. So, today I assembled the new TV stand (BDI Deploy) for the 750, then did a simple HDMI hookup to the HD cable box and hit the power button. The picture quality is very good, and I've made no adjustments.
I'll check later for firmware version status, if I can find the steps in this long thread.
Again, it looks really really good, but I haven't yet been looking for the bowing, tilting, pink V, etc. I feel like I'm sitting in a cinema compared to watching the 50" plasma I had before. I hope this works out OK, cause I'd hate to go back a 50" screen.
tsopranos 05-03-08, 08:05 PM My excitement for the 67a750 goes down every time I read this thread.
The LED engine caught my eye as I disliked the idea of replacing a bulb every "x" amount of viewing hours (on average).
So now with DLP LED, what potential problems remain?
Bowing, Tilting, Red V effect (not sure the correct term for this)...what else am I missing?
Someone mentioned that the Red V is caused by the LED light engine. Is this true?
Bowing & Tilting are the result of a shabby cabinet or what?
I'm speaking from my a$$ here of course...but I'm just trying to ascertain whether or not the soon-to-be-out 67a750 will have its own set of potential defects. Not a rhetorical question. Given what we know about the 61a750 and it's problems, compared to the later release date of the 67a750's, does Samsung then take any measures to correct these problems or are they unavoidable and inherent in the technology?
I would think it would make good business sense if nothing else.
Nullman 05-04-08, 12:21 AM I got my 61A750 delivered today and I've been playing with it all day. It replaced a Sony Grand Wega II (50-XBR800). I loved the GWII and back then was the first gen of DLP and I saw rainbows, so I didn't bother looking into them again until the LED version came out.
I must say I am very impressed. The picture is brighter than the GWII even after putting in a new bulb. The blacks are much much darker than my old GWII as well. Then the color vibrancy, wow. I pulled up a few test patterns and I have no tilt or bowing. On a test grid I could see some very slight convergence issues on the lower left of the display. You have to be within a foot or two to see it. It's a red pixel or two on the left and a green one or two on the right. It in no way impacts my enjoyment of the display. I've been playing 360 at 1080p w/ component, PS3 1080p w/ HDMI, and my HD-DVR at native res w/ component. I made very slight adjustments to brightness, contrast, shapness, and color while using Avia and DVE (also turned off edge enhacnement). I can get this TV closer color-wise to the standard than I could the GWII, even using the GWII's service menu tweaks.
I have had the 360 screen blank out and come back a couple of times while playing GTA4. I've seen this mentioned in previous posts and that 1080i works fine. I have not tried that yet, but hope we can get this resolved. Aren't MS and Samsung partners for Xbox 360?
I got a PS3 mainly for a Blu-Ray player. I got Planet Earth and I have to say I am a little disappointed. There seems to be quite a bit of noise in the image. I have not watched a film yet, so maybe that will blow me away. Today's golf game in HD did look beautiful. Again, much better greens and no flicker when compared to my GWII.
All in all, other than the 360 at 1080p w/ component issue, I am extremely pleased with the TV. Does anyone have issues with 360 w/ VGA? My 360 does not have HDMI.
Oh, one more question. Does this TV have a STILL mode, to freeze the picture?
PipeHitter 05-04-08, 01:12 AM ......snip.......but I'm just trying to ascertain whether or not the soon-to-be-out 67a750 will have its own set of potential defects......snip
I think that question can only be answered when the 67a750 actually ships and we get some feedback. I'm also interested in this unit, and fwiw I'm not bothered by the problems we've been reading about on the 61a750. There have been plenty of positive reports, and we have to keep in mind that typically individuals with issues tend to be much more vocal then those who are happy with their set. More than likely they are watching tv and enjoying it!
bruce73 05-04-08, 09:09 AM For you guys waiting for the 67":
I've had a 50" Sam DLP for the past 4 years and have loved it. But it's amazing how it's seemed to have shrunk over time. :D I want to upgrade to the 67", but am I nuts to think my viewing distance of 8-9' is enough? I've looked at charts which indicate I'd be OK, but just wondering, from those who have had real life experiences, if it would be a mistake getting the bigger set and should I stay with the 61".
It's one thing to go to BB or CC and measure out 8-9' to see (which seems fine, btw) and another when the viewing experience is in your actual living room. I realize this is very much subjective, but I do want more of a "theater" experience than I'm getting now with my 50" set.

Then get the 67" all day. I currently have 10-11ft distance. I went from a 65" Mitsu to a 60" SXRD and immediatley noticed the 5" loss. I got used to it after a while, and the SXRD's outstanding PQ sure helped, but in the back of my mind I always missed the screen real estate. Its one of the main reasons I'm looking at the 67a750, because otherwise my SXRD is perfect in every other area.

Great thread. Thanks for the link. Using the "1.5 x diagonal size" formula, looks as if I'm right on for the 67".
Which is, of course, just what I wanted it to be. ;) :D
sjchmura 05-04-08, 11:55 AM Where does the science for this 1.5x diag size place to sit come from? Clearly this does not work in movie theaters or IMAX etc? Is this some rule of thumb based on older SDE or older brightness problems? Is this so that if people have crappy sources like SD it does not look too terrible? Many of us use our computers with 24" or 30" monitors at 12 inches away - no one types from 45" from their computer :)
On my 1080p HP Batman Begins is just stunning 6 feet away (65" set) 1080p.

You'll be fine. I just went from 50 to 61 and I am 10ft away. Another 6" would have been great, but the 67 was just a bit too big for the space I had.

I think there are two things at play. And some of it cannot be scientific. First, the science in this is probably linking the ability to notice the quality of the picture from certain distances.
Second though is the ability to see the whole picture. I can't imagine that the ability to see everything without moving your eyes or head changes based on resolution. That would seem strange to me, but this could also change by person and personal preference I guess.
eforehand 05-04-08, 07:01 PM ok, i am buying a new tv this week and i have it pretty much narrowed down to either the samsung 52 inch lcd or the samsung 61 inch dlp. right now i can't decide which one i want more. i love the size of the 61 inch dlp but am concerned about the picture quality not being as good.....even though two crutchfield techs told me it would be better than the 550. the other concern about the 750 is the depth...or the fact it isn't lcd.....am i going to regret having a somewhat "boxey" tv in a year? the 52 inch lcd has a higher contrast ratio and it is an lcd......BUT it is not a big 61 inch tv......help me out please!
I checked but it looks like no one answered my post. I will be buying the HL61A750 in a couple weeks. I would like to know if I hook up my tv to my pc using the dvi to hdmi input on the tv. Will I be able to play video files on it? I am mostly concerned about .mkv files. Also how would the quality be? Or would it be better to do it some other way through dvi? Any help would be greatly apperciated. Thanks.

Yes, I agree. But do the math - how big is your LCD monitor on your desk at home/work - go into an apple store and "see" the whole 30" cinema display when you are 2 feet away and your eyes see it well at 2560x1600 resolution (these and the dell's are amazing monitors if you need to have word/excel open at the same time etc).
LCD's problem with video being close is the SDE - I can't stand it. But DLP (and newer plasma) looks really good up close.
So I did some of my own measurments of the IMAX screen in navy pier in chicago vs. center of the theater and that is 0.6x!!!!!!! :)
That being said,
65", 6 feet away you STILL see the walls behind it etc without moving your head. Even for HAlo3 or COD4 where the "Edges" need to have your eyes in focus it works.
The games would breakdown closer since you visual acuity at the screen edges so poor.

Only you can decide if the depth of the box will be a problem. Do you want to be able to hang the TV on the wall? If not, then I don't see why depth would be a problem in this case - you're not talking about buying a TV that's 4 feet deep...

Fair enough and I agree. I'm just not sure if those charts are saying you can't sit closer than the optimal, as much as further and you lose the advantage of the higher resolution. I sit 8' from a 50" and wish it could be bigger (cabinet is filled to the edge).
In my basement I plan on having a 72" at about 12', and I am sure I will be fine, and yearnign for 80" instead. Bigger is better!

Broncogeek 05-05-08, 09:06 AM The HL61A750 will be mine by weeks end. My only concern that it may be a tad to big for my living room. (Me personally, I think it could never be too big of a TV).
My living room is 20 feet long, which probably would leave a 16-17 foot veiwing area, it's a very dark room, not worried about glare. Is this TV too big for me?

My wife gets migrains and sometimes has to wear shades and ear plugs when we watch TV. Interestingly enough, her shades are polarized. And with them on you can see rainbows in white areas of the screen. But it looks fine otherwise.
bonham2 05-05-08, 10:08 AM OK. I have seriously read about 50 pages on this thread already, and I can't tell if people are happy or not. Is this a common problem that everyone has to deal with, or is this the exception? I find it hard to believe that Samsung would stand behind a bad product if this was common.
Also, those of you that own this set, did you get the extended warranty? If so, are you glad you got it or has it been a waste? My extended warranty on my Sony paid for itself 3 times over with blown bulbs and such.

However, the new Mits models are hitting the stores and might present a viable option (no, I don't work for Mitsubishi). Granted, feedback is pretty limited so far, but anyone not in a huge rush may want to wait a bit to see what these sets have to offer. Just a thought
Now if I can find half a dozen guys to move mine out of my living room, I'll be set!

Maybe I should re-measure my living room. I recall it being 11/12 ft wide and 19/20ft long. Maybe I'm just over thinking it.
Maybe they should think about widening the posts!
nickels55 05-05-08, 10:45 AM Do you all have the same issues as I do with my 6187s set? Mine makes popping and cracking noises from time to time. It happens enough to be annoying, but not so much that I'd return the set. Just wondering if they fixed this issue?
Any hockey fans here? I'd say hockey may be the one sport that really highlights the flaws of DLP. I need to stop looking for the SSE, as hockey really makes it stand out on my set. This is after I used AVIA and DVE to calibrate the picture. Otherwise, the PQ is amazing.

I would have to say go check it out real good. I have not noticed any distortions what so ever on the 56A650 while sitting. When standing I noticed a very slight curving effect to the left side of the screen.(4x3 material) Standing very well maybe the reason it looks curved. Otherwise the only thing I am trying to work out is picture settings while watching the source from the cable box. No bleeding issues and some people may be experiencing this from user settings or because of LED. As I play around with the settings I am enjoying the picture more and more. Sources from my PS3 and BD-P1200 look really stunning.
The issue I have is the poor sound quality fom the TV's speakers. If you don't mind having your Receiver on while watching the set then no problem. I have a 32" LCD which sounds better than the 56A650. I am not one to always have the receiver on but what can ya do?
If it were me I would always go with an extended warranty. Wether it's from the retailer or Samsung. If I didn't get an extended warranty I could have bought a new set with the cost of repairs my last TV required. I just got this TV on exchange from Samsung and the remainder of the warranty was transfered to the new set. Balance of the warranty is 2.5 years.
For the money this TV has excellent PQ just lacking in some features I would liked to have. I don't know what else is out there in the 56" screen size for around $1500. Internet prices may even be cheaper than circuit city.
This is my second DLP TV and my last though after watching other technologies. Just my preference. however screen size + price is the real factor for DLP.
It has been discussed ad nauseum... the reason all non-OTA sources are down converted to stereo is: DRM requirements.
Why do I have a Philips LCD that passes the 5.1 just fine then? Maybe I need to double check that, but it definitely is detecting a Dolby 5.1 stream.
I got my 61A750 delivered today and I've been playing with it all day. It replaced a Sony Grand Wega II (50-XBR800). I loved the GWII and back then was the first gen of DLP and I saw rainbows, so I didn't bother looking into them again until the LED version came out.
No on the still mode, AFAIK. I tried the command from my Harmony remote and it did nothing.
I have not had any notable issues with VGA with the 360 at 1080p. I don't have HDMI on my 360 either. What level firmware do you have? I gave up on component about the time I got the new firmware.
Thanks.
I'm not sure what is special about .mkv files. This is a great HTPC TV. Samsung DLPs always have been. You can connect to HTPC either with VGA or some type of DVI to HDMI conversion if your video card doesn't do HDMI.

My only experience with playing .mkv files (and I have a HUGE collection) is on my 4 yr.old 50" Sam DLP. I have it connected now via DVI->DVI direct from my media PC. In the past I had it connected DVI->HDMI to my Yamaha receiver and then HDMI->HDMI to the TV. Never had any problems. I use either TheaterTek or KMPlayer to play them and they look great.
I can't imagine any problems with this newer generation of DLP. I certainly hope not!

I had the same experience. However, HHGREGG was more than willing. To bad they don't have the fabulas Geek Squad and 30 day price match garantee. Still, getting the HL61A750 delivered and including a stand for $2400 ain't to bad. :D
P.S. No problems noticed yet. However, it does seem to make some popping noises. I remember reading this in the old HL-TXXXXS thread a while back. I think they attributed it with warming up and exspanding or something.
Dude2000theman 05-05-08, 01:01 PM It may just be me.
But has anyone else noticed how well this set seems to up scale a regular DVD player using either of the component inputs. My wife and I were quite shocked. Although, this is coming from a family who've been watching old 60" RPCRT at 480i. Man this new set ROCKS! :D
rkm20151 05-05-08, 01:17 PM i am getting a replacement of my 61A750 from retailer (Cfield). samsung technician could not fix tilt and a bit of bowing. Hope new one is better. Also got $300 refund due to price drop!!
folks have I read correctly and some people got Best Buy to price match Amazon? I attempted to do that this weekend and got shot down? Any suggestions?
It's simply hit or miss...depending on the store. I originally purchased the 750 from BB for $2300 out the door (tax and next day delivery). Then, Amazon had it listed for approx $2000 (at the time...free shipping). I went in with a printout and they initially didn't want to price match but I kindly let the manager know I was still within my 30-day return window and could simple return it. Seemed to make a difference. I left the store with an adjustment, $2070 out the door.
So, perhaps one approach is to buy the unit first. Then you may have some bargaining power with the threat on returning it.
Turbolader 05-05-08, 02:32 PM I was over at Fry's at lunchtime, looking initially at LCD's. I wandered over to DLP's to look at the 61A750 newly on display, and the sales guy (who had noticed that I moved from LCD to DLP) quietly volunteered something interesting. He said that if I was seriously considering one of the LED DLP's I should wait until later in the year. He said Samsung was going to drop in "a new DLP chip from TI that would increase contrast."
I understood this to be a reference to DC4, although he did not actually say this. Could be pure sales guy BS. Has anyone seen or heard reference to this?
auxiliary 05-05-08, 02:48 PM Big River is down to $1905 today for anyone on the edge of purchasing.
MrLogan13 05-05-08, 02:51 PM I'm about to pull the trigger on this bad boy (61a750) later this month. I think I'll purchase from BB and just price match with Big River afterward, on threat of return. :D
Sgooter 05-05-08, 03:27 PM 61 is no where NEAR to big for you. I've got about a 11-12ft view and I am thinking between this and the 67.
FWIW, my viewing distance is 12ft, and the 61" really fills it up. The 67" would be too much for me at that distance.
Sgooter 05-05-08, 03:36 PM Has anyone seen any stands for the 67 inchers? Big River has some generic ones at that size, and there's a bunch of nicer Samsung models (2 shelves) for the smaller sizes, 56, 61. Curious how much the stands will run for the 67's.
My local BB Magnolia store is using a Bell'o #AVS-2572 stand to handle their display of a 70" Pioneer PDP. This stand can accommodate up to a 73" flat screen or projection TV.
I'm using a BDI Deply #9629 for my 61" 750, and it works out great with about 3" to spare on each side of the TV.
Sgooter 05-05-08, 03:40 PM Do you all have the same issues as I do with my 6187s set? Mine makes popping and cracking noises from time to time. It happens enough to be annoying, but not so much that I'd return the set. Just wondering if they fixed this issue?
Any hockey fans here? I'd say hockey may be the one sport that really highlights the flaws of DLP. I need to stop looking for the SSE, as hockey really makes it stand out on my set. This is after I used AVIA and DVE to calibrate the picture. Otherwise, the PQ is amazing.
Yesterday I watched about an hour of the Pens/Rangers game, and it looked great on the new 61" 750. But then, I haven't started looking too closely for flaws; I'm still amazed at the great PQ.
Sgooter 05-05-08, 03:44 PM folks have I read correctly and some people got Best Buy to price match Amazon? I attempted to do that this weekend and got shot down? Any suggestions?
Right now you might do better by using the 10% BB coupon in the movers packet available from any post office.
This is an excerpt from the 1st post
"Energy Star® compliance addresses efficiency while these state of the art HDTVs consumes approximately half the power of a 60-inch class plasma HDTV. This new LED DLP sets typically do not require interval lamp replacement and combined with low power consumption results in a lower cost of ownership for the consumer. At the same time, the Series 7 DLP HDTVs improve brightness by more than 40 percent and offer a wider color gamut for delivering a cinematic experience beyond other display technologies --all while using only 230 watts of power, resulting in both a Greener HDTV -- energy consumption and cost of ownership message to the consumer."
I ask how this can be true when the Mitsubishi 73" Lamp model (not LED) uses 240 watts. LED is really no energy savings over Lamp but I see how they are trying to give the illusion of low enery use by comparing it to Plasma. Also, how can they claim it's 40% than other display technologies? Which technologies are they referring to, because most people here say the LED model is not as bright as the Lampa model without amping up the brightness setting.

Although the Mitsubishi 735 DLP RPD series is 240 watts, the Diamond 1080P LCD Flat panel are power hogs rated at 325 watts for 46" and 395 watts for 52".
Remember the big discussion that RPD's are dead, and flat panels were the best thing, well LCD flat panel displays are energy hogs as they get up in very large sizes. When LCD flat panels start using LED back lighting then their respective energy usage will drop significantly.
Plasmas have always consumed a lot of watts. Say 380 to 480 watts (42 and 50-inch)
DLP's generally consume 230 watts (independent of size)
Take a look at how much power a 65" Sharp LCD flat panel consumes.......525 watts!
The big thing with LED back lighting versus Sodium bulbs is the long life (MTBF 120,000 Hours), and the fact that LED's don't get dimmer as they age, compared to a bulb.
NDRugby 05-05-08, 05:29 PM I called Samsung support to see if they can fix bowing. They put me in touch with a service guy. He barely spoke English so it was hard to even explain waht I meant. Once he got it, he instantly said "I'll order th epart and call you when I get it". I asked what part, he said the board.
Is it odd that the guy instantly jumped to the conclusion that it must be the board? Also, what are the risks in letting him change the board? Could I see other problems?
From other forums, I noticed that on the Mits someone claims that the geometry issues were solved by replacing a $20 chip. Maybe replacing the board on the Samsung will fix it?

That's very interesting...
Would a sales guy have advised you to wait if it was only BS?
I think he would have held his tongue if he only wanted a sale.
Still may not know what he's talking about, however, but it is certainly strange that Samsung would not incorporate DC4 if they could.
Despite a lot of talk, we really have no definitive word.. But I'd be PISSED if I bought one of these sets now and they added DC 4 later.
Anyways, I'm still waiting on the 67" and maybe the Mits 73" laser.
The more I learn, the more I'm willing to wait.

I have been curious about this as well since i'm getting the 67 inch. There is actually a nice stand for the 72" one that is listed on Samsung's site and is available through big river. I'm thinking of getting this for the 67 as it'd only be slightly wider than the base of the TV. Do a search for the TR72B. Looks sharp :).
cstrasz 05-05-08, 05:51 PM My wife gets migrains and sometimes has to wear shades and ear plugs when we watch TV. Interestingly enough, her shades are polarized. And with them on you can see rainbows in white areas of the screen. But it looks fine otherwise.
Have you tried putting a backlight behind the television? I was reading about these recently with regards to improving black levels and helping with straining over long periods of time. Does anyone recommend this for DLP's as i see this mainly discussed for plasma's and LCD's.
Chodite 05-05-08, 06:34 PM Just wanted to chime in with a positive 2 cents.
I've had my 61A750 for just about a month now and the picture quality continues to impress me. Coming from plasma, the only thing I'm not happy with are the blacks. But you likely know that going into a DLP purchase. Even LED.
Other than that, if I had to buy another big HDTV in the $2k - I'd still get the 61A750.
Lots of visitors have also commented on and have been impressed with the picture quality of this set.

Awesome stand...clean lines and plenty o shelf space. "I LIKE..." /Borat
I just measured the spot where my TV is going. If I were to get that stand I'd have .4 inches to spare, lol. Talk about a perfect fit.
Another nice chunk of change too, but I guess it's worth it with respect to the TV.

I have the 61A750 siting on a TV stand made by
Bush. The model is:
Bush VS05850-03-Sonoma Collection
The top of the TV stand is a little more than 3" longer than the width of the TV. I don't know the width of the 67" but I doubt if it would be much if any more than this Bush VS05850-03-Sonoma Collection 57.75"

moonhawk 05-05-08, 09:13 PM Still haven't seen one of the 750 series here in Albuquerque--tho I suppose I could if I really tried..They had one "In the back" at the local Hell-hole of a BB here, but I didn't ask them to bring it out. Waiting for a bigger set.
But I did find one of last years "super-slim" models, and tried tweaking the case, just to see what some of you guys were talking about....
Holy bubble pack, Batman! My new cell phone came in a sturdier case than that thing! I see why that could cause some geometry issues.
I sure hope the new sets are stouter than that.
StevenZ 05-05-08, 09:45 PM Have you tried putting a backlight behind the television?
I found that even the relatively low light output of my old HLP4674 was so much brighter than the wall behind it that bias lighting made a huge difference in reducing eyestrain & fatigue. I bought a two-pack of halogen under-cabinet lamps at Ikea, and plugged them into the switched outlet on the back of my cable box. Later, I plugged them into a z-wave dimmer and programmed them into the startup sequence on my Harmony 890. The old lamps' transformer failed, and I bought a new three-pack of lamps at Lowes/Depot or something, and mounted them to a board. I've been too busy watching the HL61A750 to re-mount the lamps, but it's high on my list of things to do, especially with this much brighter TV.
I imagine a color-corrected lamp with better-controlled dispersion and calibrated brightness might be even better, but even this amateur version makes a huge difference. Plus, it looks so kewl when the lights automagically come on as part of the 'Watch TV' startup sequence :D.
I got my A750 at CC last month on the 23rd for 2299.99. Checked the CC site today and they have it for 200 off plus a 150 coupon off for any tv over 40 inches. Went into CC and got the adjustment for the new price plus coupon. It doesn't hurt to check prices after the purchase.
Bill
Well I'm looking at buying the 50" version and I have read several pages but it seems most people seem to be talking about the larger 7 series. Are most of the problems we are seeing being caused by the led engine? Are there v, bowing, or any other issues on the 5 series?
I was originally looking at the LCD 40" but I don't mind the extra size of an rptv but are the problems with this set big enough that I should look elsewhere?
corporate666 05-06-08, 12:40 AM I *just* placed my order with "big river" for this TV. I am PSYCHED to get it. The TV I have just now is a Hitachi 4:3 43" unit that I think I got around 1996 or so - HDTV had just become available on TV's and it cost me $1500 back then. It's been great, never a problem but then a few weeks back the convergence on one third of the screen started going away. Its worse on start up but even after its warmed up it's off by a good 1" or so. I know, I know, you guys are shuddering just thinking about it.
Well, this new TV will be a HUGE step up for me. It's for the bedroom. I am about 10-12' away from where the TV will be. I have a cubbyhole in the wall 58" wide, so this TV will fill that up nicely (and then some) :) I have DirecTV HD as well as an XBOX360 and an HTPC with a huge media library so I can't WAIT for this baby to show up.
I have a couple questions for you guys...
1) I got it from "big river" - I am in Boston. Does anyone know where the TV ships from? I imagine they have regional warehouses?
2) Does anyone know what shipping method they use? I imagine it has to be truck freight, not UPS since it weighs 90lbs in packaging
3) Any tips other than just checking the box thoroughly when it arrives? I hear nightmares about damaged sets so I want to avoid all I can
4) Can anyone tell me the actual width of the base? I want to pick up the 42" "Contempo" TV stand at walmart. It holds 250lbs and the size of the stand is 42" wide by 23" deep and it's 20" high. I am hoping this would hold the TV OK? I don't want the base hanging over the edge.
5) Lastly, I wasn't really able to see what, if anything, this TV comes with? I don't have any HDMI cables as far as I recall, does the TV come with anything other than the base, remote, power cable and manual? I wanna play with it when it comes, so I hope to have all the cables for the XBOX and DirecTV H20 here beforehand.
FWIW, the total at big river was $1885.04 which included FREE shipping (for some reason it charged me $59 shipping then the next line was "shipping discount -$59"). To me that's a great deal. And a reputable store - I am a happy guy!
moonhawk 05-06-08, 12:58 AM No one can answer your question untill you tell us what TV you are talking about.
Also, did you check the first post or two on this thread?
They usually contain all the "vitals."
Yea the first post will have links to each tv's specs. The width, hieght, and length. The tv does not come with any hdmi cables. You get the remote and tv thats it.
This is what I am picking up for my tv when I get it later this month. Maybe this will help you.
Logitech - Harmony One Remote (Can't beat this awesome remote)
3 HDMI Cables from Monoprice. Look for the link above they are pretty cheap.
1 HDMI Cable DVI to HDMI for pc hook up.
The stand I am getting is the basic stand that samsung recommends. Look for it in the pdf on the first page for the tv you are buying.

I have not done a Computer to TV hookup before.
What do I need on my computer side if I want to also keep a monitor hooked up as well as the TV?
sjchmura 05-06-08, 10:01 AM SO has anyone published head to head comparisons of the lamp vs. LED for the 61"? I have seen some hating on the LED, others saying it is better than plasma .....
It would be great if someone has tested these well calibrated under the same conditions...
btw.. anyone know WHEN the new 67" comes out???

I was able to find the specs for the TV size but nothing I read (even in Samsungs detailed product info file on their website) listed the dimensions of the base. The TV is 54" wide or so, and the base is a bit smaller... it's hard to tell in the pics but it looks around 36" wide for the "foot" that the TV stands on.
I'm hoping a 42" wide stand will fit it. Anyone have an A750 and can say for sure how wide the base/foot of the TV is?
Also, just an update, I figured out that the shipping goes from "big river" to either CEVA or another company who then delivers it. The only downside is they are saying May 15th for delivery, which seems hella long for a TV delivery. Even ground shipping is only 5 days coast-to-coast. I had read a post somewhere about someone calling CEVA proactively to schedule a quicker delivery, so I am going to try for that. And here I was hoping to get the TV for the weekend!
I guess it gives me time to get a stand and some HDMI and DVI->HDMI cables for my devices and PC. But it's gonna look bare with a hole in the wall until the TV arrives :)
I never hooked up a pc to my tv yet. But as far as I know all u need to do is plug the video card of your pc to your computer. Depending on your video card you can use the dvi to hdmi hook up or dvi to pc hook on the tv. I want to mainly use it for my .mkv collection.

Actually, her Migrains have nothing to do with the TV. It's the ungodly amount of perfume that people wear! :( I mean, If you stink that bad, why not just take a bath or something! LOL!
mitsu50 05-06-08, 10:35 AM anyone offer any insight to my earlier question of:
I looked inside the set via the ports, and can see some debri on the huge mirror on the back. i didnt want to wipe or do anyting to it for fear of ruining the mirror or lense. can the screen or mirror be damaged by touching them? what should be used? thanks!
Sgooter 05-06-08, 11:00 AM I'll check later for firmware version status...
Bump...sort of.
The build date listed on the back of my 61" 750 is 3/31/08, and it needed the firmware update to 1004, which was simple to do.
Also, per the Samsung site, registering the set online adds 3 months to the warranty.
LOL DUH must have been tired when I posted that... sorry, it's the A750 that I picked up.
All A750 tells people is that you're getting the LED series - it says nothing about the size. I believe 61" and 67" are the options and the 67" model isn't shipping until June (unless I'm mistaken), so I guess we can assume you're getting the 61" model.
alvindd 05-06-08, 11:23 AM Just received my new replacement 61A750.
No bowing, no picture tilt. YEAH!
The A750 cabinet feels thicker or sturdier than the 6189
"Standard" picture setting is great. I had used Movie for the 6189.
I did bump up Black level and Dynamic contrast.
Only issue are the speakers sound much cheaper or weaker than the 6189's speakers.
Sounds like they need more bass.
I pumped the bass settings in the equalizer option menu.
Most TV is watched using an Onkyo 705 receiver anyway.
Harmony remote setup for my old HLT6189 also works for the A750, so no need to run wizard again.
Build date: 4-04-2008, T-AQMAUSC- 1004
I think that this is the latest firmware version.
MikeDaMan 05-06-08, 01:37 PM Hey fellas! I'm about to get the 61" 750 series. But out of any HDTV I always am ultra picky about "Motion Blur" Does this have any motion blur? Correct...it's 16 microseconds.
In comparison, some sexy new Samsung LCDs boast having a pixel refresh time of 4 milliseconds in order to greatly reduce motion blur, such as during sports events.
In essence, these DLPs have no motion blur.
Hey fellas! I'm about to get the 61" 750 series. But out of any HDTV I always am ultra picky about "Motion Blur" Does this have any motion blur? I heard there is none, if so WOO!. Also I heard that the 2007 LED models have 16 microsecond response time.. is it the same for this? Thanks guys!
-Mikey
DLPs are the fastest TVs out there as far as response time goes. There will be no blur that you see on LCDs...

nice, need to take my receipt in and get my credit
Well I'm comparing the Samsung to the Sony XRD and one thing I noticed is that the Samsung tv is very dim compared to all other tv's. I asked the salesman about this and he said its because its a rear projection tv. The Sony XRD is rear projection as well but it was not dim. Was the salesman correct or might there have been something wrong with the tv set they had?
jaseman 05-06-08, 03:25 PM anyone offer any insight to my earlier question of:
I looked inside the set via the ports, and can see some debri on the huge mirror on the back. i didnt want to wipe or do anyting to it for fear of ruining the mirror or lense. can the screen or mirror be damaged by touching them? what should be used? thanks!
Just to see what the inside of my HLN617W looked like (as to how dusty it was) I had to take off the entire front of the set.
Actually it was virtually dust free! :D
But I still wiped down the inside of the screen as well as the large mirror in the back using a micro-fiber cloth that I got with a pair of sun glasses. You can get something similar from your local eye-doctor.
I'm sure there are other places that sell them also. Do a Google search.
As long as the cloth is designed for expensive optics you should be OK. Just try not to leave any greasy fingerprints or dust bunnies. ;)

thanks for the info. since they are replacing the set, i'll leave it alone. good to know for when the warranty is up! :)
If you checked them at the store, you have to take a few things into account. Was the lighting the same for both? Was the settings similar? I looked at several tv's at Nebraska Furniture Mart and I played with the settings because they have the remotes out. I left the setting on the A750 at standard, so if someone else walked by they would think the tv was not as bright because all the others are on some sort of Dynamic setting.
I just bought mine a few days ago from Big River for $1904. I should recieve it next week. I personally thought the Samsung 50" plasma I looked at had a little bit better picture, but I couldn't turn down the value of the A750. The picture just was not that much better on the plasma.

Another thing you could probably use is one of those cans of compressed air that they use to clean computers.
Ordering the extended warranty from one of the AVS vendors was very easy and at a really good price for an additional 3 years. I know on the Mitsu I have now the extended warranty more than paid for itself.
cocheese 05-06-08, 04:03 PM I just noticed on the BB web site that the A750 is no longer listed under the normal DLP section. It is under the outlet and discount section. I also checked the store availability and a couple of stores in my area that I know had them in stock no longer carry them.
I usually start seeing this happen when a model is being discontinued or a retailer quits carrying them. Circuit city is still listing them on their site though. Have not checked anywhere else.

Are you sure? I just went there and clicked on Televisions->Projection and it's right there at the bottom.
I think I'm going to get this tonight for my new house. I've been going back and forth and think I'm going to take the plunge. It's funny, Saturday it was $2299, Sunday it was $2099, and today it's $1889. Some might think that's a bad sign, but I'll bite at that price - especially when it was the first TV that caught my eye when I decided to upgrade.
cocheese 05-06-08, 04:41 PM Wow thats weird. Its on the main projection page now. But it is still not in the rear projection section. Oh well, thats my bad. The only other thing that bothers me is that some of my local BB no longer have it listed in stock. It may be because they are sold out and have not restocked yet. Cool deal.
Broncogeek 05-06-08, 07:15 PM OK, now I'm scared. I was going to go get the 61a750 today, and noticed that the price is now cut even more. I can walk out the door at 1950 with this TV. Why is the price being cut so much. Last years models are just now starting to drop. SOMEONE talk me into going to buy this TV before I regret it.

This must have been a mistake because the A750 is no longer in the outlet section and back with regular TVs.
The price is going down because Samsung lowered the MSRP on this TV from 2399 to 2099, so you will see lower prices in store.
I don't think there is a problem with the set, I just think Samsung is trying to be competitive, especially with new Sonys arriving any day now. Even though Sony no longer sells rear projection, every sale Samsung gets takes one possibly away form Sony. From my understanding, there is going to be generous price cutting across the board this summer because Sony and Samsung both want to be number one.

Go for it. The same thing happened with the Samsung LCD line. The new models at some points in time were selling lower than the older models.
Technology gets cheaper the longer it hangs around. Manufactures also find lower cost ways to produce things.
I am waiting for my 61A750 to arrive. It is on it's way from California. I live in the east, so it will take some time, besides I need to get a stand anyway and make room for this beast.
corporate666 05-06-08, 08:58 PM All A750 tells people is that you're getting the LED series - it says nothing about the size. I believe 61" and 67" are the options and the 67" model isn't shipping until June (unless I'm mistaken), so I guess we can assume you're getting the 61" model.
Well, I guess since the 67 isn't out yet and I mentioned I was hoping to get it by the weekend, the 61" assumption would be a good one! Also, if the 61" was under $1900 shipped, I'd poop a brick!
Yes, it's the 61".
Just received my new replacement 61A750.
Harmony remote setup for my old HLT6189 also works for the A750, so no need to run wizard again.

same here!!! i have seen the weird reflection that happens at the top of the screen that is inside the black bars...has anyone found out what is causing that? Other than that my set is SOLID...
I haven't been on this thread for several weeks, and I have been reading some of the back pages but I can't find the answer to what I am looking for... Did the Power cycling issues reported by people on this forum get fixed for this TV?

It's just the usual help us help you thing - make it as easy as possible for people to figure out what you're asking and you're likely to get more useful answers in return.
It would probably be a good idea to ask your question(s) that didn't get answered again and include the exact TV model number you're asking about this time. Your original questions are now a few pages back and aren't likely to get answered at this point.
Anyone with a 50A650 have an issue with the vertical viewing angle? I could only find a 56A650 and thought the picture was excellent, the left/right viewing angle good but the vertical, up/down angle to be quite narrow compared to my SXRD.
If this the case does anyone have an issue with it, or once you set the viewing height it's a non-issue?
Looking to recommend one for my parents, the price is right and the PQ excellent, it seems to be a great deal, just don't want them to be disappointed once they get it.
Thanks

my old HLT5687S that got replaced by this set from samsung never had the reflection in the black bars...however, it did have WAY worse red reflection glow in the center of the screen during dark scenes...this new set is awesome tho with no noticeable bowing or tilt and the blacks are better on this set than on my HLT5687S!!! It seems like the reflection seems like it is prolly a small easy fix, they just have to figure out what is causing it, and it only occurs on the top never on the bottom.

Wow... I took visit to BB and asked about the price different between what I paid and the current price. Turns out that the price match was only the first 30 days and I was the first to purchase the HL61A750 so I was beyond this period. :( However, BB being a "kind and gentle" company... they provided me a "nice" gift card that kept me from "missing" out. Definitely on the "happy" trail again. :)

i havent checked for it, and i honestly don't want to because then i will always see it. So far i dont see it and i have watched a movie with a ton of dark scenes in it today. Have you seen it in regular viewing? My old HLT i could see it while watching any source material not just the test images, it was pretty distracting and annoying at the same time, so this time i am gonna go with ignorance is bliss because i am tired of dealing with these problems.

That's odd. When I looked up BB policies here (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?type=page&entryURLType=&entryURLID=&categoryId=cat10011&contentId=1118843518460&id=cat12098), I found this:
Already bought? If an item you purchased at Best Buy is advertised at a lower price at another Best Buy store in your local area or on BestBuy.com, we'll refund you the price difference from our own sale price, or 110% of the difference from our competitor's sale price, up to 30 days after your purchase (14 days on select categories*, 60 days on HDTVs purchased from 3/2/08 through 5/10/08, 90 days on HDTVs purchased from 1/13/08 through 3/1/08).
So if you purchased on or after 3/8, tomorrow's still within the 60-day HDTV window. You posted (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=13427432#post13427432) about your new TV on on 3/20. Even if it was a couple days after you bought it, you should still have time to save some cash.

What is all the tilt and bowing? Where does it come from and how is it fixed?
tilt can be fixed, however, the bowing is there to stay if your set has it because it is due to the cabinet being messed with during shipping. The bowing is either a smiley face with horizontal lines and hourglass is a bowing ) ( of vertical lines when viewing in 4:3 mode, hope this helps.

That totally sucks! So you just have to cross your fingers and hope it doesn't arrive screwed up? Do people object to replacing the set if it does infact having bowing/smilies? In that case couldn't you mess it up yourself at home by moving it if you aren't careful? uhmm this set seems a little less appealing now haha

i think bowing is more related to something being placed on top of the box when being shipped. If you harshly move the tv set around then you could potentially mess it up. Both my replacement sets have had virtually zero bowing/tilt. My original set i bought online had bad bowing (smiley face) and no hourglass bowing. So I think when Samsung ships their replacements out they treat them very nicely.
splattered 05-07-08, 12:18 AM I don't know if bowing is something i am willing risk in getting a new TV... too bad they are not better built. The 40" A650 LCD performs awesome for an LCD and seems a bit more sturdy so maybe i will go for that one instead. Too bad, i really like what i've read and seen on the HLxxA750 up to this point. There is seriously nothing that can be done to fix it? A technician can't replace parts and fix bowing? Weird...

yea, big river's price is $1867 right now for me with free shipping and no tax. that means i'd pay about $150 more from BB. i wouldn't buy BB's extended warranty so i would really only get good support in the first 30 days right? or do they cover it for the first year?

HA!
On the $100 an inch, I look at it differently. The 67 will give you 20.6% more screen real estate than the 61. 20.6% is significant in my mind, but that's a personal decision.

If you're looking to buy the 67 then I would highly suggest waiting until at least a month after it's out. They've already dropped the MSRP on it several hundred dollars before it even launches so you know they're going to drop it even more a month or two after launch just like they are on the 61 right now. Unfortunately for Samsung they don't have a choice except to drop the price because people are still buying flat screens over DLPs like crazy and they're trying to compete. Bad for Samsung, good for us.:)
If you absolutely can't wait until July to buy the 67 then I would suggest buying from a B&M store so that you will have the luxury of their 60 day price guarantee.

Nullman 05-07-08, 11:29 AM Really? That fixes the blackouts and screen tearing issues? What about SSE and RBE? How does this set handle those things?
I have not read anything about the other things you mentioned. I don't have screen tearing, SSE or RBE on my 61A750.
What I don't understand is if your buying this TV why arn't you using hdmi for your xbox360? Don't use component for your xbox.
nickels55 05-07-08, 11:33 AM I have not read anything about the other things you mentioned. I don't have screen tearing, SSE or RBE on my 61A750.
I am sure you have some SSE - you either aren't watching stuff that highlights it or you don't know what it looks like. There is no way your set has no SSE, as that is virtually impossible with the way the screen is made and how DLP technology works.
Zyeox - the older Xbox 360's don't use HDMI cables, only the newer elites. The next best thing is the VGA cable for it.
ZBoomer 05-07-08, 11:40 AM SSE is really a result of the screen structure itself, not DLP. I had a DLP front projector, and there's no SSE at all.
The Samsung DLP TV's definitely have SSE, if you don't see it you don't know what it looks like. :)

I didn't care for my HDTV shopping experience at CC either. Went there 5 different times to closely check out the 61" 750, and on each occasion the set on display (as a full-up HT system) was being used by some grundgy-looking young adults (18-20yrs) happily playing PS3 video games. I waited each time for at least 15 minutes to check out the TV, but their video gaming never stopped, and the young sales staff didn't seemed phased by the situation at all. After the 5th time, I told the sales manager that I was fed up with their silly video arcade store, and would buy my HDTV somewhere else. I seriously doubt whether the video gamers had even $20 in their pockets, but for some reason CC seems to welcome and encourage these kids camping out in the store for hours on end playing free video games. No wonder CC has chronic problems making their financial goals.
The next day I bought the set from BB. They didn't crowd me, but still gave me their full attention the entire time I was there.

okuturn 05-07-08, 12:04 PM I've monitored this thread for quite sometime now once I decided that between the three technologies it was the DLP that was going to give me more bang for my buck. I also decided that if I were to go that route and an option existed beyond the bulb as the light source I would go that direction if it had merit. I decided on the HL61A750A at the first of the year given the announcement of improved brightness with the new models and have waited patiently for it to be released before making the jump. I picked mine up yesterday once the prices dropped to an acceptable level.
If you are like me and just wanted to come up to the modern age of television and wanted a very nice size screen with a modest expenditure then I can tell you there is no better option. I'm not one for perfection and don't look for the failings but yet just sit back and see if i like what i see. Straight out of the box - no changes - HDMI hookup from my 360 - gaming blew me away. The picture was incredible compared to my old style televisions. The quality of sound was more than impressive for being onboard the television. The playing of a standard DVD through the upscaling the 360 performs - fantastic. If you aren't anal about your tech and don't tear everything apart looking for flaws you will be very happy with this television. That is not meant to knock anyone who insists on top quality but if you look hard at anything you will find failings. I'm just wanting to share with those like myself that aren't as particular but yet want a nice experience. All the talk of minute issues that won't bother the majority of users who just enjoy sitting and watching a great picture almost scared me away from this purchase.
Hope this helps those that are like me and still on the fence about buying this tv. I'm glad I grabbed mine before quality DLP disappears entirely.

Nice write up :) You sound similar to myself in how you approach sets. Just curious, were you coming from a previous RPTV set or is this your first HDTV? Would be interested to hear others opinions coming from sets that are older (I'm coming from a 6 year old pioneer CRT RPTV)

I've had an RPTV before but the old box style, analog 4:3, about 5 years ago. It was removed from me during a less than amicable parting of ways with an exwife. Been using flat CRT ever since then. This is my first jump into HD and with that jump I did a lot of homework to decide how and where to spend that chunk of change. I researched the plasma, lcd, and even the fringe technologies that haven't even gone mainstream yet. I will say that the DLP tech (with the LED engine) is a huge jump from the old style RPTV of yesterday. Brightness, viewing angles, overall aesthetic appearance have improved. Heck it took 4 men to move my last one, this one I can pick up myself. It is lighter than my 27 inch CRT.
Not everyone wants there TV on the wall.

nineatesix 05-07-08, 12:35 PM That can't be right...They're showing 5/20 for my zipcode (although my old jersey zipcode shows the 5/9 date you're listing). I'm guessing they're speculating at this point although one would hope not :/ Big River still listing 6/1 and Cfield is still listed as unknown *sigh*.
Maybe due to a short haul from where it comes off the boat in Newark?

No reason I know of to blow $100 on that, spend $9 - $40 on the VGA cable instead. Besides, I've already got 3 other sources that need HDMI.
Except for the fact that there is no consistency in issues between different sets I'd agree with you. Like I said, if the people like you ended up with the xx% of sets that have severe noticable geometry or focus issues, this thread would be a lot shorter. But unfortunately you probably got one of the "perfect" ones.
Just because you don't have an issue with your particular set, you very well may sing a different tune if you got a dud.
That's not a reason to not buy DLP, but it is a reason to buy from a place with an easy return/exchange policy. I sure wasn't one who said don't buy it because of the issues, but many people just want to buy a set and be done with it, and RPTV is probably not for them. I mean, face it, the person you describe in most cases doesn't come here, doesn't know the difference between 480p and 1080p, and will probably buy the sale TV at Wal-Mart.

I have been reading this thread for a long time now. I have decided on to get the Samsung HL61A750. For a number of reasons. One is the price. With a kid on the way price sure makes the wifey happy when I tell her I want to get a new TV. I will be exchanging a Sony trinitron 32in HDTV but in 4:3 screen. So it will be a big jump for us. As for the issues to me anything would be better than what I have now and once I get the Mack warranty I should be fine if I run into a problem for the next 4 years. I think most of these issues will get ironed out by the time I will get the TV in the next couple months. I mean the issue with the 1080p with the xbox via component has been fixed already. I say don't let anyone persway you to get a different tv. Go look at it and make you own decison and use what they said as a reference.
Charles R 05-07-08, 01:43 PM All the talk of minute issues that won't bother the majority of users who just enjoy sitting and watching a great picture almost scared me away from this purchase.Among the minute issues covered in this thread...
1. 100% of sets turned themselves off and then back on (fixed via firmware).
2. 100% of sets lose several user settings when turned off (only one of them have been fixed via firmware).
3. 100% of them show reflected content within the upper black bar.
4. 80% (or so?) have a somewhat tilted image.*
5. 50% (or so?) have convergence far worse than the others.*
* Based on my findings from looking at over 10 different HL61A750s.
To my eyes the disservice is done when someone blankly endorses something by using their own experience as an overriding factor. Just because I am happy with my purchase everyone else should be... even if they don't happen to purchase the exact same set I did or have the same standards. :)
Knowledge is power and can even confuse some people. However that isn't an excuse to stick your head in the sand. Yesterday we had our state elections and last night they were running tickers at the bottom of the screen and mine were displayed perfectly level (not like a roller coaster).
This was the first time actual content would have really shown the issue (convergence) and it was outside of my 30-day return period. If I had an issue I would have been rather upset especially knowing I could have checked for it within a couple of minutes using the guidelines in this thread based on these minute issues.
I mean the issue with the 1080p with the xbox via component has been fixed already. I say don't let anyone persway you to get a different tv. Go look at it and make you own decison and use what they said as a reference.
I still have the blanking issue when running 1080p over component while playing GTA-IV. HDMI seems to be fine @1080p and I get no blanking when running 1080i on component.
I updated my firmware to 1004.

all that for free? just wondering, because ont BB online they offer an upconvert dvd player for free, i got it for free 2 weeks ago
but if u got all the free, then it's awesome, which stand?
Yea if you got all that for free what a deal you got. You sure made out. Once you get it you should take some pics and post on here. I haven't seen any pics in this thread on the tv. Thats the one I am probably gonna get. So pics would be great to see what it actually looks like.

The way it was worded I believe he paid for everything and nothing was free.
I went and got it last night (won't pick up until closing on the 16th) due to the 3-year financing BB was offering. I was mad that they had to price match their own website, which then made it impossible for me to get the $100 off PS3 deal I thought I would be eligible for. But I did use a 12% off coupon for a stand and I didn't really need a PS3 now anyways since I prefer the 80gig MGS4 bundle coming out in about a month.
jhferry 05-07-08, 03:18 PM My repair guy just left. Looks like I have to go through the exchange process. My case is actually warped, I didnt notice it until he pointed it out but the the right end corner warps down, the left bottom end warps up. The actual footing of the TV has a warp to it. There is a curve to it. Now I have to wait. If you stand behind the TV and pull hard on the left top side it straightens out. I guess I could shim it but this is beyond that I think.
Broncogeek 05-07-08, 03:18 PM Sorry, so excited, forgot to use commas.
The Yamaha DVD player was not offered. So I got the sammy $99.00 upconverter DVD player for 50 bucks. The TV was 1889. I just got a stand(made for a 42") but, the TV will fit on it for now. I plan on making my own, just give me some time on that one.
I think I made out fine............
missrunt 05-07-08, 03:35 PM Just did some checking online and with the local Sears store about the 67 incher. The website showed the soonest delivery date of the 20th of May for the unit. I stopped by the Local store and asked them to check their system to confirm, and according to them their website is correct.
Wonder how much of a price drop the 61 incher will have soon???
Any guesses????
I'm thinking $1599-$1649 in a couple of weeks.

I went back to BB (was there last night) and took my 10% off card from the post office and they honored it. I would have used this last night but my local guy said they couldn't use it. Bottom line is that I was able to get a PS3 and lunch for less than $5 based upon my original purchase back in March. :)

Still showing earlier in NJ (5/10). Had been 5/9 earlier today.

jwhazel 05-07-08, 04:30 PM For those of you interested in purchasing the 67" at best buy, I managed to wrangle up this info today:
===================
Model: 67A750
Retail: $2499.99 **
ETA: 6/1/08 **
SKU: 8793442 (not on the bestbuy website yet)
====================
** Although generally accurate, subject to change at any time.
I was able to confirm that the dealer price for the 61" was dropped in last couple of days hence the reason why everyone has been lowering prices.
This is pure speculation, but I have a feeling the price was dropped in anticipation of the 67". I really doubt there will be another price drop until the end of the year. From looking at sales numbers and talking to sales people, it doesn't look like these things have any problem moving. I'm not saying they're blowing up and taking over the lcd/plasma market, just that they aren't sitting stagnate on shelves.
NDRugby 05-07-08, 04:34 PM For those interested in the HL72A650, B&H has it at $2499, no date listed yet. They do charge 135 for "White-Glove delivery service", but that is still well under the $2999 on the rivere grande.

For those of you still considering the purchase of a 750 or some other HDTV very soon, the current BB 60-day price match policy applies to purchases made by 5-10-08. I don't know what BB will do to cover HDTV purchases after that date.

Although I did buy this stand used, I'm very pleased with it. It's currently using my older Sony KDF-46E3000, which while was used for 1/3rd the retail new price (thanks E-A-G-L-E-S), is a very nice stand worth the price. My 56A650 is supposed to be delivered 5/9/07. I'll let you know how it stacks up.
Tom in St. Pete 05-07-08, 09:11 PM Am I crazy to order these sets on line? I have been contemplating buying the HL61A750 at BB or CC but just came across a site Camera Addict.com selling it for $1418.00?... Any thoughts or concerns?
RandomHajile 05-07-08, 09:32 PM I know that price talk is a bit taboo here, but this is really a discussion on bad customer service. I just thought others wanting to price match may want to hear about this.
So, banking on the revelation that BB is currently going to price match up to 60 days, I went into one to see what they could do. I bought my TV in Cincinnati (Eastgate), but I happened to be in Columbus (Polaris), so it was a different store. I went to the back to see what their price was and it wasn't the sale price that they had on the web site, so I'm glad I printed it out earlier in the day. I had used a 10% off coupon at $2299 and triple RZ points with 2 year interest-free financing, and I'm now at about 33 days. The service desk clerk was very nice and started to go through the process, when her manager stopped her and pulled her away. Apparently she "couldn't" (read: didn't want to) give me the price match and let me keep the interest-free financing. She kept referring to it as "double dipping". I argued with her (the manager, Cindy), trying to explain to her that I could go online right that second, and get it for $1889 with 3 years free financing and a free DVD player (which I wasn't even asking for at that point). If I had paid for it with a credit card, it wouldn't have been an issue, apparently. It shouldn't matter how I paid for it. She was downright rude about the situation, rather than trying to see what she could do. I asked to speak to her supervisor and she was unwilling to get anyone above her. I asked for her supervisor's name, and she told me to call Best Buy customer service.....so that's what I did. I got in touch with "Dave" and he told he could send me a Gift Card for the $155 difference or I could go to the Eastgate Best Buy to see if they could take care of it. I opted for the Gift Card, as I live 90 minutes from Cincinnati, and this way it wouldn't affect my financing or points. I didn't push the issue any further. I would have liked to get the DVD player for our bedroom (it plays Divx), but their price matching policy specifically excludes additional free offers. They almost lost a loyal customer, and I plan on filing a complaint on Cindy. I won't ever shop at the Polaris Best Buy again.
Also,
Has anyone figured out how this tv displays a 24p signal?
I've posted this before, but here it is again:
Well, the way I understand how the chip works, it is always displaying pixels at 120hz, no matter what. (Could even be faster...don't think I've seen an official spec on the chip's capability.) They use this ability to allow for 60fps 3D display, if you have a compatible (and probably awfully fast) video card in your computer. When displaying a 24fps source, it just displays the same image 5 times. Some TVs artificially interpolate between frames to smooth out the 24fps to 120.

Um yeah, do a search on "Camera Addict" at www.resellerratings.com.
.50 out of 10 rating.
Received a mailing from Tweeter today, on page 4 they have both, the HL67A750 and HL61A750 listed. Reg price on the 67 is $2499.99 before $300 in store savings and the 61" is $2099 before $250 in store savings and they are also running a 18 months no pay/interest.
has anyone on here reported the black bar reflection to Samsung so that they know about it? Just wondering if it is something like last year's "halo reflection" that was on virtually every HLTXX87/89S, and it was as simple as swapping out a shiny gasket with a flat black one..anybody getting any answers?

You don't see it because it's not there.
It's not there because you don't need artificial enhancements with the superior technology of DLP--they don't blur.
splattered 05-07-08, 11:55 PM Blur? That's not what AMP does...
