View Full Version : Denon 2900 player...Time to replace it?

Hey Guys,

I've been reading about the HD players and saw that the Samsung BD-P1200 got the best reviews of all players on the "Secrets DVD Benchmark". What interested me the most was that it had an excellent PQ on the standard DVD's which I have quite a large selection of. I also noticed that the price for one of the units is currently around $230.00 which surprised me. I love my DENON and would only want to replace it if I could get another unit that would have the same PQ and sound as what it gives me. I know that the HD DVD quality of the Samsung would exceed my DENON. Also, I'm thinking I could sell my Denon for the same as what I'd have to pay for the Samsung (hopefully!)....OH...It would be connected to a Toshiba 46" RPTV 1080i via HDMI....Give me your thoughts...

Thanks!

HD-DVD and BD players playing high def discs would both outperform any SD DVD player. And yes, they do a great job upscaling SD DVDs as well. But you'll need to keep your Denon for SACD and DVD-A.

Okay. So you're saying that none of the Blue Ray players can play SACD or DVD-A?

A Reon based player will outperform the 2900. I used to have the 2900 and it's not as good as the XA2 or 2930CI I once had.

None plays both. The PS3 plays SACD, and I believe the Panny plays DVD-A. Most, including all HD-DVD players, play neither.

A Denon 3800 DVD player outperforms a Denon 2900 DVD player on image quality. I just retired my Denon 3800 DVD player and replaced it with a Samsung Blu Ray BD-P1200 player.

With standard DVD, this Samsung player and it's Reon chip doing the deinterlacing up to only 480P produces spectacular images surpassing the near perfect Denon 3800's DVD 480P images. Of course Blu Ray disc images from the BD-P1200 surpass standard 480P DVD playback on both the Denon 3800 and Samsung BD-P1200.

I still have a 2900 player I use in my extra room. Two fantastic features about the 2900 - seamless layer change and lightning fast response. Make sure your new player is the equal in these two catagories - or you may be disappointed.

I totally agree....I LOVE my player.....I'd only want to sell and replace it if I could get a unit that plays equally as well + have Blu-Ray...Is there anything out there within a reasonable cost ($400 or less) that would meet my requirements?

I still love my DVD2900 and have an SDI modded unit.
Would this, coupled with a DVDO iScan HD or HD+ be
good enough to continue enjoying my SD DVD collection (over 800 titles)
with my older HDTV (no DVI or HDMI inputs), as opposed to replacing everything?
Any experienced opinions are welcomed.

tn001d,

nice price, have 2900s really dropped that much in value? I might be interested if your price is negotiable--as a backup to my SDI modded unit. feel free to PM me.

I have a Denon DVD-2900, I purchased when they first came out. I think the PQ is little soft compared to my Denon DVD-1600(Panny reboxed). The SACD and redbook are not up to other models however the DVD-Audio is superb. I'm looking to replace when the new models come out this spring. I'm told it will be worth the wait.

I was one of the IDIOTS! that bought the 2900 when it first came out.(idiot because I paid $1000 for it) Then 2 months later they dropped the price over $300. I really liked the unit, until it quit working last month. I picked up the 3930ci last week. This unit is amazing! I bought it on-line at e-cost.com for $750 and that included proiority next day air. I ordered it at 8am had it the next day at 10:0am.

QUESTION-

I had a Denon 2900 (and 5900) back in the day and sold them years ago. I now have HD DVD players (XA2, XA1, A2s) and a dedicated Blu ray player.

Should I grab a mint 2900 for $125 today? I have a few SACDs and DVD-As, so I could make use of it.

But obviously if it is not a steal at $125 today then I will leave it.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I think the 2900 is a steal at $125.00 (I wouldn't sell mine that cheaply - great second machine)

Good to know.

After all this time I was not sure how the 2900 stacked up against all the other mint items you can get today for around $125.

I had a Denon 2900 and loved it especially for the DVD-Audio and SACD but since I went to the Oppo I have never loooked back.
You can get the Oppo 980 new for $169 and you will be extremely happy with it. oppodigital.com

Well that is the question....get a $125 2900...a $125 something else... or a $170 Oppo...

To me, my beloved 2900 is worth more to me then what I could get for it. I think a perosn would be hardpressed to get over $200 for their unit.

As such, it will stay on the shelf well after BD for redbook, SCAD, and DVD-A playback. In fact, I'd move it to the garage before parting with it for say $100 or something.

I sold my Denon 2900 on Audigon in one day for $250 and then went with the Oppo. I have turned all my friends on to the Oppo. Either the 980 or the new 983. Hard to beat for the money.

Just discovered that my Denon 2900 is having issues (haven't used it in awhile - only one set on multi-channel analog inputs - currently used by my Sammy 5000). Did a search and dug up this thread.

The DVD/CD door won't open. I can hear the motor attempting to do it's thing, but no luck. Looked up the factory reset, but same result.

Is there anything I can do by opening up the box?

Is it time to say bye-bye?

If so, what is comparable SOUND wise or BETTER (SACD/DVD-A)?

I was hoping to wait until the new OPPO BR comes out, but still haven't heard anything about DVD-A. (one box solution sounds good to me ). How do the existing OPPO universals compare to the Denon as far as SACD/DVD-A?

Suggestions/input welcome.

TIA

I'm not familiar with that specific model, but in general I would try to work the tray up and down as it's trying to eject. Then I would open the case and see if it can be operated from inside. While there, blow out the dust and reseat any chips, cables and connnectors.

Then I would give up.

I have a Denon 2900 w/SDI feeding a Crystalio II. I have no intention of selling this player. One of my best HT purchases ever.

Yeah, kind of what I figure I'll try when I get a chance. I kind of "jiggled" the door when the motor activated, but nada. I'm hoping that if I pop the cover, it'll be obvious what the problem is.

Thanks

Was happy with mine until the whole upconvert/HDMI thing showed up - never could convince myself on an external converter.

I may end up with the Zektor MAS 7.1 if I can get the *%$# door working again. The audio on the SACD/DVD-A has been good - just have heard that others will outperform it now.

Yep. And the 2900 is the fastest player ever produced. A virtual speed demon in every respect... (and absolutely no layer chnge:))

Finally got the chance to pull it out of the rack and open the case.

Did a fairly thorough visual inspection of the interior. No obvious cause. Cables/connections all look good, and surprisingly VERY little/no dust present!. Pulled out the can of compressed air and began to see if there was any dust below what was visible on top.

I then hear that dreaded rattling sound. Something fell onto the bottom of the case.

Couldn't see anything obvious, but after moving/tilting the case, I see alittle piece of plastic. Tough to tell if it fell out of a slot, or broke off. One edge doesn't look quite right - it isn't square, but it is fairly straight. I think it came from the drive area.:(

The drive itself is very securely mounted, and there are no visible mounting screws. I don't particularly feel like disassembling the "frame" of the case to get a better look. Door still won't open.

Unless some inspiration comes to me, I think it's replacement time. Now I must be patient and see what the OPPO BR83 has, or figure out if I want to look at something else.

Anybody bought a refurbed Denon? Looking at the 3930.

I recently got a Pioneer DV-58AV, but I'm still using my DVD-2900 for DVD playback as it's faster and more convenient to use. Picture quality is just as good for both players using component for the Denon and HDMI for the Pioneer to a Pioneer plasma PDP-507XA.
