HI , recently retired am brand new to HD format and have a 5000 on pre order for Feb with Amazon
This will b my first HD machine
Started collecting HD titles on Amazon BOGO sales for HDDVD and Blu-Ray
Also have 500 SD and liked 5000 because of advanced upscaling conversion with the Reon chip
HD DVD-41
Blu-Ray-53
Presently own older model Onkyo TX-SR804 which has 2 HDMI in connections but isn't 1.3 receiver
and im told 1080p wil not travel through from TV to receiver to HD player
So am presently hooked up HDMI 1.3 cable from my old DVD player to Sony LCDXBR5 and Digital Optical fron HD Player to Onkyo receiver ( Can also use my Analog in on my old receiver with new HD DVD player if i choose )
Have read about 5500 but my gut feeling because of price tells me no Reon chip and no Analog Outs
The 5000 is $750 total with amazon
Dont want to invest right now for 1.3 avr, can always do that down the road my old Onkyo is pretty good receiver with lots power (105 watts at 8 Ohms )
Should i just get 5000 or cancel and wait and mayb get the 5500
Can i hook up 5500 using my optical connection from HD player the same way as with 5000 with the same results minus analog out connections
My primary concern right now is PQ and upscale conversion
Any help will b greatly appreciated

With a collection of 500 SD disks, you'll want the 5000. The Reon will be VERY useful for you. My SDs look very good on my 5000.

All signs point to the 5500 lacking the Reon processor, so if upscale conversion is your primary concern, you should stick with the 5000.

Not sure if I understand your question completely, but you don't have to tell the player what type of disc you are inserting. It automatically detects whether it's an HD-DVD, Bluray, or SD-DVD disc.

I would wait for more info. Not sure whether the 5500 definitely does not have the Reon, or whether people are just guessing/assuming.

5500 does not have reon.

These pics confirm lack of analog outs:

I was wanting to hold out for the 5500, but if it doesn't have analog outs that's a deal killer for me
