I am trying to help a friend who is currently playing PS3 in SD - I feel sorry for him and he doesn't know much about electronics etc.

The problem is that his receiver only has 1 component input and no HDMI inputs. I think besides his father buying him a new receiver his only solution would be to purchase a component cable switch box.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I saw this one on monoprice but it had mixed reviews:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10112&cs_id=1011201&p_id=3027&seq=1&format=2

If anyone knows of a switch box that will not comprise picture quality and is reasonably priced please let me know!

Also, is this right solution or is there another way to handle this tragic situation?

Thanks!

Does he have another set of component inputs on his TV or a free HDMI port? If so why not just run the video directly to the TV? There really isn't a lot of point in running it through the receiver in the first place.

The reason for the receiver is because the PS3 is being played on a 70 inch projection screen and the projector is mounted on the ceiling.

?

So either way some sort of cable is going to the projector so I still don't get why it matters if you simply just go straight to the source so he can get hi-def. How clean is the install for the ceiling install? Can a new set of cables snake into the walls/ceilings without it looking tacky to achieve what is needed?

All the cables are installed in the celing under the drywall so I pretty sure that is not an option.......

Anyone have an ideas that don't criticize me?

I would also imagine he would like his 5.1 sound through his PS3 as I do. Thats reason enough to run it through the receiver. Your monoprice option is a sound one.

Running the video through the receiver has nothing to do with the sound last I check

Wow, 70" in SD? I hope you find a solution for him.

This may be a dumb question, but why not use the component input on the receiver? You didn't state that it is being used by something else.

My bad - that is currently being used for the HD cable box.

A switch box or a new receiver are pretty much your only options. I would assume monoprice's models are good, but can't say for sure.

I'd opt for an updated, bargain, receiver if funds are tight. I'd visit the audio forum and see what the latest recommendation is to date but you can probably buy a budget receiver for ~$100 that will have at least two or three component and possible HDMI switching at this point. With that said, if that's too expensive, I would hang my hat on the monoprice product as well - I have had nothing but great luck with everything I've purchased from them. Cables, HDMI switch boxes, etc. have all be perfect.

Also before you do anything are you sure the receiver will pass through widescreen HD well? I've heard numerous reports of receivers passing widescreen HD resolutions through component as 4:3.
