View Full Version : GOLDEN GLOBES telecast canceled
SOURCES: NBC And Hollywood Foreign Press Association Cancel Televised Golden Globes; Entire Event Will Be Scrapped
The Hollywood writers strike can now claim its first awards show casualty. The latest I'm hearing from my sources as of a few minutes ago is that NBC will not be televising the Golden Globes as planned on January 13th. Insiders tell me also that the entire event, even if it were held untelevised, will be cancelled. And the Hollywood Foreign Press Association instead will merely make an announcement of the winners. I've not yet received any official confirmation of any of this. But insiders tell me that NBC Universal topper Jeff Zucker and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association which bestows the Golden Globes made the decision together.

schaubless 01-07-08, 03:19 PM thank you. there only needs to be one anyway.
I note that the above announcement has been changed slightly. But the update is basically the same as I posted earlier. Here is the updated addition:
"Nor will a much ballyhooed unbroadcasted event be held, either. Instead, a stripped down announcements telecast will be aired by NBC News. It will consist of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association handing out Golden Globes to the winners, who will then pick up the awards and pass through a press room for photos and interviews. "It'll now be a news event where the actors can still get all glammed up," a source told."

I really don't see how this is a big win for anyone. If the show had gone on, the actors and directors could have expressed their support for the WGA on a national stage. Letterman does that now, but his audience is pretty skewed.
The risk to the WGA is that NBC can televise something else that is much cheaper and maybe make a respectable profit. People are going to watch something and the networks may see that very cheap reality, news and game show programs that attract maybe 60% of the old audience might be just as profitable in the long run. If that trend catches on the actors and directors are going to have to rethink the level of their support for the WGA.

If it's a true press conference, it ought to be opened up to all electronic and print media.
As of this writing electronic is exclusive to NBC. WGA still plans to picket the event, again as of this writing ... more tug-of-war to come.
Golden Globe Awards Ceremony Cancelled
NBC to Announce Winners at Jan. 13 Press Conference
By Linda Haugsted -- Multichannel News
The Golden Globe awards will be bestowed in 2008, but not at a champagne-fueled primetime gala. Due to the strike by the Writers Guild of America, the awards will now be handed out during a press conference carried live on NBC.
Attorneys for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had been in negotiations since Dec. 29 to save its annual gala, but gave up Monday on its attempts to craft a deal that would mollify writers, since actors vowed to honor the WGA picket line and shun the ceremony.
“We are all very disappointed that our tradition awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favorite stars celebrating 2007’s outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television,” Jorge Camara, president of the HFPA, said in a prepared statement. He added that this year’s award recipients will be announced on Jan. 13, the date originally scheduled for the awards ceremony.
NBC, which had rights to broadcast the awards ceremony, will now cover the awards announcement as part of its Sunday news telecast.
The cancellation eliminates a marquee event for such cable networks as E! Entertainment Television and TV Guide Channel. The networks bank on red carpet arrivals coverage to boost ad sales.

Excellent!
buckloons 01-08-08, 08:48 AM Bummer. An unscripted show might have been more fun to watch.
I don't know the legal ramifications of this or if it would even be possible, but it would have been great if the show's producers decided to proceed with a simplified, scaled down version the show, sans the filler and banter that would have been provided by the writers. I realize that there may be contractual obligations and the like, but really...are striking union writers really the only option at this point, or are the show's producers just being politically correct by not crossing the picket line?
I actually applaud Letterman, Leno, and Conan for deciding to produce new shows as of last week, even without the striking writers (Letterman's situation was a little different, as he worked out some sort of deal with his particular group of writers). It's really a shame that this strike (and many strikes these days) aren't just about a particular union showing its solidarity and calling for change, but also about a desire for the industry to come to a halt until everything is resolved. Those shows have received much criticism for crossing the picket line, and as politically incorrect as this may sound, I'm actually all for it in this situation. If anything, it shows the union that despite their best efforts, the show can and will go on.

Yeah, damn them for wanting to get paid for working! Who do they think they are?
No awards show? Good! Enough of those ridiculous self-aggrandizing circle-jerks...
RAVEN56706 01-08-08, 10:32 AM Yeah, damn them for wanting to get paid for working! Who do they think they are?
wait the writers were working for free?
Southern2356 01-08-08, 11:06 AM are striking union writers really the only option at this point, or are the show's producers just being politically correct by not crossing the picket line?
It's not the producers it's the talent. Without the talent crossing the lines there is NO SHOW. Nobody wants to watch a show without stars...some of us don't want to watch with stars either.
