I turned on the set and all I got was a blank screen with a red power light blinking. I was not even able to turn it off using the remote or pressing the power button; I had to unplug the set to turn it off. Pluged it back in and the light was blinking again w/o me pressing the power button. Any idea what the problem may be? This is ~7 yo set and I am not sure that it's worth fixing even though the picture was still great.

Mine (65") died about 3 weeks ago. Same symptoms. My googling revealed a wide variety of potential problems. I'm afraid if I get it fixed it will be the start of a series of repairs. What's worse is I'm paying for HD service to watch on a 32" CRT. Bummer.

My 65H81 is slowly but surely coming up with a few different varying issues that kind of come and go. I still love the PQ of it but I feel it's time may be up. It's not worth fixing I'm sure due to it's age and the fact that there's more than 1 issue with it. So I'm using that as an excuse to get something new here soon within the next 6 months or so. Assuming the set doesn't die before then that is.

Hi,

My 65H81 just died by the blank screen and blinking red light. Can anyone tell me what that is and the possible cost to repair?

Thanks
Normy

I have a 56X81 and my picture failed - turned out it a resister was fried but the technician was not sure what high voltage issue caused the problem - he replaced the resister - charged me $250 - and said it might have been bad anode caps or some other reason and he would fix that for an additional $250 if it failed again- well two months later the TV failed again -called the tech who comes to the home to fix things - he has been so unproffessional that it is difficult to schedule anything with him - there have been no shows etc, he seems to give priority to Best Buy warranty issues - probably makes more money that way...and it's now 3 months later..well I finally gave up on him and have now contacted another repair shop - I am in southeast Iowa so there can be some distance for repairs...

If I can get the TV repaired for under $200-$300 I will probably do that not sure how much more it's worth spending at this point...I purchased my TW56X81 in late 1999 and paid about $4300 for it then from Best Buy...

I will post additional info as I figure things out...

I had the green CRT fail on my TW56X81 just weeks after I bought it in 2000. So I paid for the 5-year extended warranty. Naturally, nothing else went wrong until the warranty ran out. I figure I'm next in line for the blinking red light of death, so please let us know what the repair costs ended up being. That might be a signal that it's time to replace the unit, although I love the PQ.

My 56X81 just got the red blinking light of death. Bought it new in Nov 1999 for $4100. Nearly 11 years is pretty good life for a RPTV I think. It was used a lot and has served us well, never had repairs.

From reading here and other places it looks like it will cost a minimum of $250 to $650 to repair it and then it may fail again shortly. It is time to lay it to rest. Since we have a dedicated home theater with a 1080P projector, we can replace this RPTV in the family room with something like a 42" HDTV for $500-600 these days. Not worth repairing a dying set.

Thanks Toshiba is was a good set. ;)
