Which one? The new Panny? The Saphire? The 10 million PS3s already in the wild that'll be upgraded before 2.0 titles are released? Or are you just making an infantile fanboy comment?

OK, so you mentioned 3, none of which under $399.

So what? Price wasn't even the focus of the thread so WTH are you talking about? Also, please enlighten us: Exactly how much will the Sapphire 3 & 4 cost? Thanks!

Funny... the XBOX 360 fans use the same arguments against PS3 fans:

Wait till Heavenly Sword
Wait for Uncharted
Wait until Metal Gear Solid 4

Either way, the PS3 was too big a factor for Toshiba to compete with. If they lost 200 per PS3, and sold 8 million PS3s, that's 1.6 billion + the other billion they may have spent on Warner and Fox. Now they need to fight with game companies to make some exclusives.

Sony better hope that blu-ray does not remain niche after all this money they've poured into it. Even if those numbers arent completely accurate, they've easily thrown over a billion dollars into this.

Either way, I'm happy -- i get my high def movies and gaming from them!

No Blu-ray only players for me. The only standalone I would buy would have to be dual format, which is how this format war will finally end.

So you think Sony's going to cut their margins now, when the war is supposedly over? You think they are going to undercut PS3 sales putting less potential game sales in homes?

I mention price because for some reason profile 2.0 features are being touted like some sort of great new premium feature. It's not. It's something that should have been there from the start so new players can compete on price rather than hardware. This is why CEs love blu-ray. More money for them.

I actually own both technologies. I just don't like the BDAs tendency to screw the consumer, and I find BD fanboy's zealotry annoying and without any perspective what so ever.

When a whopping 3% of the population wants interactivity I don't think it even matters that there isn't any BD live content or players available.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/live-from-the-blu-ray-interactivity-demo/read the Endgadget blog reporting and it all looks pretty impressive. I might surprise myself but I doubt that I use these new capabilities much. But the HD-DVD folks who were all aglitter about interactivity might like it once they transition to Blu-ray.

Noticed a lot of bitter HD-DVD fans commenting at the link. They must be very interested in Blu-ray's interactivity.

Isn't 3 players as many as HD DVD ever had in current production for the entire format: a low, mid, and high-end Toshiba at any given time? Why were people fine with 3 players from one manufacturer on one format, but need dozens on the other?

(And of course there will be more 2.0 players announced soon. Sony hasn't even announced a 2.0 standalone yet, but that's a definite).

If the PS3 is getting that, I am down. Although I have one request.

ALLOW THE USE OF A FREAKING KEYBOARD AND A CENTRAL LOGIN!

I liked the Web-enabled stuff on HD DVD, but not being able to use a USB keyboard with my Xbox 360 like I can with other stuff absolutely sucked.

If they can do some of the things I enjoyed on HD DVD, then I'm all for it.

While the studios mattered to this point, now it will be hardware and consumers who dictate the market and if they have their say, how many with good advice would buy anything but a BD player. CES is showing the trend already. There is little or no support and what there is seems to be getting toned down.

I am hoping to buy the Denon which is 1.1. Hopefully Denon does not up the spec to 2.0... 2.0 scares me.... Could be bug city.

Glad that so many folks will have so many Bd players to choose from. A lot going on at CES.

Apparently, no new HD DVD players.... Warner ended the line.

Sony produced Betamax players for years. I would expect Toshiba will produce HD DVD players or combo players for a long time as a sort of "thank you" to those who bought into their format.

We aren't going to hear much out of Toshiba for a while though. They just got the shock of a lifetime with the Warner news and are probably talking with Universal, Paramount and any CEs they work with on what to do to wind this down.

BD-Live looks interesting, but it's not a feature I would ever use. I haven't once used the web enabled features of my HD DVD disks.

Profile 1.1 is enough for me, and my Panasonic bd30 suits me just fine.

Danny Kaye, VP of Fox takes the stage. They're trying to merge BD-J with social networking and other online interactivity. Says that they also own MySpace and it could be really big with BD Live.

Not a way to sell it to those over 25...

Here is how I feel about the PiP feature for Rush Hour 3 BD. Now take my opinion with a grain of salt, because I don't want to watch much extras or take the time to watch them.

All this talk about the PiP thing and BD specs, what nonsense. I checked PiP directors commentary on this disc and got bored fast. The audio drops to two channel and...ah...what is the point of even saying anymore. I am not really much into special features on discs other than some out takes or cut scenes on comedy, so I am a bit biased.

Maybe in a better title where there is a great story, great acting and SFX, PiP would be different.

Give me a movie with pristine A/V and that is all I need to make me happy.

Not that I won't try with my PS3, but I won't go out of my way much.

I have as much if not more time than most being self employed, especially in the winter. How does anyone find time for anything much beyond the movie itself with all else that is going on in life and all the other tech toys and media we have like gaming etc to keep us busy.

This is the biggest issue with all the add ons/extras and now interactivity will take more time people don't have or don't want to take to view these.

Yes, I am cynical as I just don't 'see' it, pun intended.

I can see kids and teenagers taking the time or more so having the time like my children do. They are into Asian movies and shows they watch on the net and can sit there all day long.

How many times can you watch the same movie ?

I can tell you I love the goonies but i've seen it over a dozen times in my life time. But listening to the commentary which amounts to the actors watching the movie and talking about their memorys made me love the move even more.

I normaly buy the movie , watch it and then later on watch the extra's . It adds extra value to the experiance.

I rent and I can watch some movies like Lethal Weapon and Terminator and the like every time they are on in HD. I get sucked in even though I have seen them literaly dozens of times. It is funny though, because I almost never watch my purchased BD titles more than once or twice so I agree with you there. A ton of good new movies comes out all the time including many good foreign titles. Plus like I said I have many other things to put time into like gaming, watching hockey in HD and other media interests.

I know the studios are not dummies when it comes to marketing and sales as they have some of the best from Madison Ave., but I can't help but think extras are niche and most people don't watch them or have the time.

I would love to see some stats on this and maybe I would be surprised, but I would guestimate that less than 10% watch extras and that maybe even closer to 5 %. Now I am not talking about watching extras once a year or once in a lifetime, I am talking about watching them on a regular basis for every movie that has them. WHat is the percentage of viewers that regularly watch them is what I want to know.

jmpage2
01-07-08, 07:15 PM
I agree. The commentary, etc, is worth it for those movies you really love. The type of movie that you will buy vs. rent, etc.

Even if I only enjoy these features on 25% of my discs it is a nice feature to have and I'm glad that the feature is finally making its way to BD.

Fwiw, I agree. I don't watch many commentaries, and pip only adds an incrimental improvement, but it's nice to have if you're intersted enough to watch. I'm looking forward to more of them being available on Blu-ray.

Is there not a PS3 keyboard available? I was sure there was.

Having a keyboard doesn't automatically mean anything. I have the chatpad for the 360, which works most excellent for messages and chatting. But on HD DVD's when you log into web-enabled features you can't use it, you have to use the remote or the 360 controller.

If BD-Live stuff will use a keyboard to sign-in with, then I am all good.

BD-J has been standard on all BD players starting with the Samsung BD-P1000. That's the BR equivalent of HDi -- an intrinsic part of the product.

This is partially correct. I believe that we've been told that the Java version will likely change to support the 2.0 features. Unless this can be done via FW update than it's likely that even if these features are authored in BDJ they won't work with legacy players.

No question, BD-J has been periodically updated (including with the BD-P1000 :)) and that will no doubt continue as features are updated/developed and problems are identified/repaired, but the language interpreter has always been part of the product.
