View Full Version : How many Call of Duty 4 users are experiencing online connection issues?

Just thought I'd post a random survey to see how small or massive the connection issues are for Call of Duty 4 users when going online.

Personally, I get into a match about 1 in 10 tries for the past 2 weeks.

Getting online is really bad for me lately. I'm on the East Coast (New York City).

Add me to the list of spending more time trying to get into a match than playing... Mid-west location for me...

Very very rarely can I make it into a match without the host ending the session.

Yeah, it seems like there are a lot of newbie hosts, that decide to quit the match once they start getting owned.

As far as being able to get online, it seems like it's all timing related. Day before yesterday, I could get online into just about any match I tried. Yesterday evening, I would just sit there and wait and wait... :( I guess it all depends on the load the IW servers are having.

Up until 2 days ago, I really had no trouble joining. Lately it's been taking 5 mins or so to find a match:(

Hmm. Just picked up the game two days ago. I thought it was something wrong on my end. Guess not. Does this game have dedicated servers or is it all player-hosted?

Usually takes a good 5-10 minutes to find a game, but I can usually find one eventually.

The real killer, though, is I keep getting kicked. Out of the dozen or so games I've played in the past few days, I've only been able to finish one full match. Not sure what's causing that, but I'm pretty sure it's not my connection (since I don't have problems in other PS3 online games).

Very rarely does it take me longer than 30 seconds to get into a good match. Normally I need to exit out of being the host 2 or 3 times, then it drops me in a good room, ready to go.

Before the patch I had more issues, but after the patch, my biggest complaint is that it makes me host like 80% of the time and people only join my game 1 out of every 25 hosts or so, it seems. But I haven't left all of them to wait for players. Sometimes I'll wait a minute or two if I'm getting a drink or whatever, but I generally just exit it out and search again.

EDIT: It's so weird that seemingly alot of people are still having trouble. I wonder if finding games becomes easier with your rank? Is it possible that higher ranked people have less trouble? I'm just wondering why I seemed to be the guy with the most problems when no one else had them, a few weeks ago, and now apparently I've done a 180. I've only changed my rank, and my wireless router. For a number of reasons, I don't think it was the router though. If anything, perhaps a poor signal can cause longer wait times, because maybe it increases your ping or something?

I would have a hell of a time trying to find a game before the patch. Once it came out, I was waiting 1 min tops, and now I'm back to waiting again.
Demonware is who's contracted by Activision/ IW to handle the servers, and they aren't doing so well at it. Still hooked on it though:)

I cannot get into games after 3pm. I find that when too many people are tying to play online the match making servers are just too overloaded. If i do get a game its by random luck. I do notice I find games alot faster when I when a group of friends but playing solo searching for matches never works out.

Getting online today was surprisingly easy..."Down Loading Settings" took seconds, "Getting match quality" was just as fast and low and behold I was able to join/find a match in under a minute - honestly it was more like 20 seconds. Until tonight I was (as I voted in the poll) occasionally able find a match often with wait times of 10-20 minutes.

Hopefully this is a sign of things to come. It's about time that Demonware and IW got these nagging server issue resolved.

FWIW - I was able to get into "Ground War" with relative ease.

From a post tonight on the CharlieOscarDelta forums by FourZeroTwo, their customer relations dude:

Hey Everyone --

As you know everyone is back at the studio in force as of today and the day has been full of discussion regarding the PS3 version. This isn't an update thread, but a heads up to an update coming. I'm going to have an update for you in the near future (probably tomorrow) regarding the server issues you may have experienced over the holiday break while attempting to play online in Call of Duty 4 PS3; this update should give you all the background information on the issue and some fixes that should be going into effect.

Essentially, today we're getting everything in order for this, so that I can update you tomorrow and keep you dialed in to exactly what's happened, happening, and coming.

Let me know if you have any questions, now that we're all back in the studio keeping on top of this and most importantly steady responses back to all of you will be greatly improved.

Wow. That's great news rgditial. Thanks.

As an aside, I played from 11pm to 12pm with no problems. Took about 1 minute to get into games (deathmatch, tdm, sabotage). Got disconnected once. Not too bad.

There's more problems when joining as a party than joining a game by myself. The major problem is when joining as a group the game jumps back to the party screen from the game start up screen.

Personally I feel the Online problems with COD4 are no worse, than any other game I have played online, on the PS3. Warhawk, GRAW, R6V. Even Motorstorm had it's share of issues...and dont get me started on Tekken 5. There have been days where I couldnt get on, and other days I get on an play for hours. It's a work in progess, until they iron out all the bugs.. all of the games seem to be that way. IMHO YMMV

Same here. If you sit there and wait, it could take a while, but if you exit out of being host a couple times, it will find you a good room pretty fast.

Agreed. I do the same all the time. If I don't get in within 30 sec, I leave lobby and find game again. Get in the second time right away 90% of the time.

I just got the game on the weekend. When I am in a party (with my old Resistance clan), we get into games quickly. When I am by myself, I never get in. I suppose it is because of my rank. There have been lots of connection problems, too.

I'll have patience - Resistance went through the same stuff. Sounds like IW is doing a good job at standing behind their product (just like IG does with RFoM).

Originally when I first got the game -- around Dec 15th -- I connected to games lightning fast. This lasted until around the 29th of Dec. From then on I rarely can get into a game other than Oldcore or Oldschool.

Clearly from the insiders post above, there is an issue with the servers that affects some people - unfortunately I'm one of those people.

I'm hoping this patch comes quickly because I do love this game but when I sit online for 30 minutes trying game after game and can't get in I quickly begin to despise it...

my fingers are crossed

I've had the same problem since Dec. 29th. As a matter of fact, everyone on my friends list has had the same problem. We still can get into a game but it sure does take much, much longer than it did last year.

I have confidence it will be fixed very soon......uh, maybe.....hope so.

Thanks for the update 402!

Will new maps be included?

Any DLC (which none has been announced) would come via a patch of the game from us here at Infinity Ward. The update we'll be talking about tomorrow is Server-side only, and won't need to be downloaded and doesn't effect the game code at all. It's purely server-side by Demonware. More details tomorrow.

Quote from fourzerotwo of IW. As you can see it was posted last night and is referring to today for the server fix.

Last night I was able to get into online play quite easily, and everytime I tried. Quite a change from the night before that.

I agree with you on this. Problem is there are more copies of COD4 than most PS3 titles so complains seem to be more and more. COD4 is relatively new compared to the tiltles you mentioned so hopefully overtime it will get better. The other online game I play is Motorstorm and it has been rock solid but I started playing it after about 7 months of being released so it is not fair to compare now.

Personally I had lots of issues before the patch. I did all the NAT stuff and opened the recommended ports. It still take me a long time to join games but eventually I would join.

Then the patch showed up. Right after the patch I would join games most of the time within 10-15 secs

Then came the Holidays and a mass number of COD4 players with it and it now takes me a little longer thatn after the patch but way less than when I first had problems.

I like this theory. Maybe it is because once you rank up you can go to more game types. As a newbie to the game you are just funneled to the TDM and FFA and if there are tons of people trying to do the same I guess we get these problems. I think IW mentioned that the problems were due to increased volume specially in these two game types due to an increase in the amount of players. YMMV

I play exclusively HQ and now S&D a little. Neither one have any trouble joining. Haven't tried boring TDM or FFA in forever ;)
