I think I read awhile back that Mits was going to have a big presentation about their new laser tv's Monday night, I think at like 7pm PST.

was looking for same on the web today, to no avail. Dunno why they'd waste a whole day w/o showcasing their product - unless it is a vaporware and they're having second thoughts about sticking with RPTV.

I'm pretty sure that they were unveiling these new set's in a big presentation and not just having em at some booth like most products. And I think that was for tonight around the same time I am posting this message. So everyone calm down...

I noticed you started this thread in the...

Flat Panel General & New FP Tech

This TV is not an FP AKA Flat Panel, it is an RPTV AKA a Rear Projection TV.

It was meant to be, I realized it wasn't after I put it there. They had supposedly made a fp version, seems not.

I would be grateful if you can move it :)

Tonight at the Moon Room on the top floor of the The Palms Hotel & Casino overlooking Las Vegas, Mitsubishi unveiled its laser HDTV. As expected, Mitsubishi kicked off the event with a few execs expressing their love for lasers -- and Mitsubishi in general. They explained that Mitsubishi is a leader is laser technology and owns 75% of the led laser market, so bringing them together with big screen TVs made perfect sense. Then the event went from execs to night club as the curtain was dropped and there were three 65-inch laser HDTVs on display. At first glance the colors were sensational and the contrast was extremely intense; and although we were hard pressed to see anything that struck us as groundbreaking, we'll need to see this side by side with a traditional set to really know what we're looking at. Unfortunately, the event was short on details, such as price or availability, but during 2008 is the time frame Mitsubishi is aiming for.

"Mitsubishi LaserTVs not only provide the ultimate picture quality,
they are also capable of delivering a true 3D viewing experience,

for entertainment viewing by partnering with Hollywood on

Interesting that NO SPECS are given anywhere. They must not be THAT excited over it.

Good Luck Mitsubishi!

I'm kinda underwhelmed by what I have read regarding Mitsubishi's presentation. The LaserTV was on the top of my anticipation list for this year's CES. I was expecting a much smaller form factor, pricing information, and rave reviews. The set looks like a standard DLP, and the guys over at Engadget seem a bit unenthusiastic about the picture quality ("we were hard pressed to see anything that struck us as groundbreaking"). Laser will probably be the technology that will iron out the quarks of previous RPTVs, but it won't be the be-all-end-all.

Well perhaps they don't want their competition to know what it's advantages are, so they can't drum up support for their own displays to underwhelm it. That seems pretty far fetched though considering the opposition also has committed already to their technology. If it's superior it's superior, if it's not well... I personally wouldn't release specs so the launch hype wouldn't prematurely deflate.

I'm underwhelmed and it all smells of marketing spin to me. What are the benefits? There's obviously a working prototype... give us something more about it than "OMG LASERSINMAH TV PEWPEWPEW!"

I'm not looking for a new television for at least another year but was excited tonight for this announcement :'( Hopefully some of these bloggites pull some specs from the reps before the show's over.

Here's some more information from the launch party from Gizmodo:

Mitsubishi put together quite a spectacle to introduce its Laser TV last night at the Moon Nightclub at The Palms Hotel in Las Vegas, unveiling a 65-inch rear-projection set that uses a unique laser backlight. The result is some of the most vivid color we've ever seen on any TV, especially the primary colors of red, green and blue. The blacks were midnight-dark, too, and there was even a 3D version of the TV (goofy glasses required) that only made us slightly cross-eyed. Mits officials said to look for the TV to appear on the market "later this year" at an undisclosed price, and added that it will cost about the same as flat panel TVs of the same size.
How does this laser backlight work?

When pressed for details, they kept repeating their mantra about laser being the "purest light source," but from what we could see, we think it must have something to do with hot-looking dancing girls, frickin' lasers, smoke, and maybe even mirrors. We were taking shots of the TVs, but all these women kept getting in our way. Oh, well. Check out the almost-NSFW work gallery for details.

Here's to hoping the technology is more than fluff.

thats the part that worries me. that and a while back mits did say these were going to be marketed to the premium end of the market.

i sure hope they dont really mean = price to flat panels. this vs a 70 inch lcd omfg that would be crazy talk. but if a 73 inc is 4k or less. and 3d which will prob just be the diamond models, then im sold

What do they mean by this? Are they hinting that it will be priced similarly to a 60" plasma, or LCD? If so, that is FAR more than I was anticipating. All this talk about Laser being under $1,000. :(

And youtube video said laser TVs are cheaper to make than bulb/LED based DLPs.
Looks like 2009 is the year for finally having a decent DLP (Samsung will add DarkChip 4 and 240 Hz and Mitsubishi will release laser DLPs)..
