View Full Version : Onkyo DV-CP704 DVD Changer
Has anyone else had problems with this player not working? I have had 4 different units go bad. They won't respond to any button press and have to be unplugged to reset. Each of my 4 customers have reported the same problems. I switched to this unit because we were having so many problems with Denon's multi disc DVD.
Does anyone out there sell multi disc DVD changers that can comment on a reliable version. Multi disc changers are the only electronic component that I have had ALOT of problems with. I also sold a customer a Yamaha version that only lasted about 3 months before failing. Considering the small margin in these products, I have gotten to where I don't even want to sell them because it is not worth the hassle!
dasher123 01-09-08, 05:51 PM mine is on the way, a refurb from onkyo...(cost only $92 form shoponkyo, btw)...crossing my fingers it's a good unit.
spanky267 01-10-08, 09:38 AM I have the 704. I bought it back in November. New unit not a refurb. I have had no problems what so ever. Maybe I've been lucky. But mine has worked with no problems so far.
dasher123 01-10-08, 09:41 AM Thanks...makes me feel better...
I will post feedback in a few days when i get mine set up.
RTCAMPER 01-10-08, 02:25 PM I just set up our Onkyo 907 HTIB with DV CP 704 player. In testing the new player - it rejected each one of three DVD discs as "bad disc" but played CDs just fine. All the DVDs were pretty new, including Pirates Caribbean III, which had been played once and I cleaned it anyway just to be sure. Onkyo customer support recommended that I "reset" the unit - which I will do tonight, as well as check the "chain" playing option to be sure that it will play DVDs and CDs (but I cannot imagine that confining media to CDs would provide a "bad disc" message for a DVD. Anybody else seen or heard of this issue?? Thanks for the help.

No, I have not experienced this problem with my 704. I've played a few new discs in it and several old discs. It hasnt rejected any of them. I havent tried to play cd's yet.
You guys are making me nervous now. If this thing kicks the bucket I am going to be quite upset.
dasher123 01-10-08, 05:51 PM I just got it...played a few CDs, (analog R/L)and man it sounds good; very good CD audio SQ for a dvd changer; no problems; haven't played any dvds yet...(I got this mainly to play CDs as my cd changer died, and also for upconverting dvds when i get an HDTV soon)
The unit looks spanking brand new; and came with all the accessories, cables, remote etc...it's DEEP though....freaking 17" deep, so I can't put it on the rack, have to set it up later...will play some dvds and update again.
(I don't have a HDTV yet, so won't be able to provide any HD feedback)
but for now it functions well, and changes discs (CDs and pc-recorded CDRs played in all random modes just fine, and the disc changing is pretty smooth, but not completely silent)
dasher123 01-11-08, 08:52 AM I got this because the cdp(changer) section of my mini Onkyo setup giving up the ghost last week...
I've never been a big fan of changers but I must admit I realized I have become quite fond of the CD changer we had, my wife especially.
So in order to resolve that problem AND to cover the need for an upconverting dvdp (for the HDTV that i expect to get in 6 mo. or so), I decided on going with a refurb Onkyo DV-CP704 dvd/cd changer...The main use I wanted is a good quality cd changer, and that this is one of the few affordable dvd changers that actually upconverts upto 1080i (HDMI)...I saw the added benefit that this would be compatible with my mini Onkyo amp's remote also...
with the Onkyo points I had and shoponkyo's special new yr price, I was able to get it for $92.00 shipped! I was pretty happy with that :)
So I got it today, and it looks and feels brand new, not a single thing to show that its a refurb, with all the accessories, depsite onkyo stating that refurbs may not have cables, manuals etc...the unit feels very well built; solid, and tough to the touch; front panel buttons operate smoothly.
The pics are not that great...sorry about the ghetto set up, and wires/cds mess, due to the thing not fitting in the entertainment center:
this thing is DEEP, I mean, it's 17" deep  , and doesn't fit in the rack, so for testing i set it up ghetto like on the box, and put 6 cds in (orginal and burned CDRs)...and hit play..
it's so deep, looks like a perfect square! :

The mini cdp i had was a 1bit and this is a 24 bit, and probably has different/better DACs etc, but I didn't think it would make much difference, but man it does! first thing i noticed was that the output level is higher and that the music had so much more depth...it sounded more..."massive" is the term i think, and at the same time, I felt that the music is more clearer than I remember from the mini cd changer..absolutely wonderful vocals...and pretty much everything...This may be mainly a dvdp, but the Audio CD quality it truly superb. I guess I can see why there are hi-end cd players out there!
The 6-disc carousel is pretty smooth, and changes discs quickly with a bit of noise (only during the change); probably normal. The load times for CDs was pretty short, but I will have to see how it does with dvds...

this changer plays tracks in random mode across ALL 6 discs...(I've heard many cd/dvd changers doing the random mode only within the current disc, which people have complained about a lot in reviews of other dvd/cd changers)... I know that this unit has some kind of bass management too...but i don't know if it works with CDs or not...haven't played around much...
There's a "party mode" button, haven't used it yet...have to go thru the manual to see what that does..

I have not played any dvds yet...our entertainment ctr is such a PITA to work with, I will have to connect this later to the TV, and see how it compares to the Pioneer dvdp we normally use...if there's a difference in PQ etc...How good the upconverting of this dvdp is, i will have to wait to see when we get the LCD...(From what I've read on AVS, and 1 member from here, it does a great job of upconverting.)
I like that the blue light above the tray that provides illumination when changing discs, etc...that blue light can be turned off and the whole display can be dimmed 2 steps. The display is green, not blue like my receiver, but at least it is not a whole lot different.
Anyway, main thing right now is: we're happy we have a CD changer which looks like it's pretty solid and dependable, and has excellent SQ. Considering it was $92.00 shipped, and gain of another $15 in shoponkyo points for buying it, I think I can be happy.
~Thanks for reading.
(will update how its dvd performance after watching a dvd in a day or two)

dasher123 01-12-08, 08:40 PM can someone tell me if this dvd changer has last position memory? (in my bottom of line pioneer player, if i stop a dvd, turn power off, and later power on, the disc plays from the position i stopped at. it does this even if i take the dvd out of the player and put back in. (up to 5 disc memory)
I would like to know if this player also does this without reading tthrough the whole manual :)
thx.
Had mine for almost a year. Still truckin' along. :)

Yup, I bought a refurb and right out of the box the tray makes a clunking sound while ejecting and skipping to next disc. Locked up a couple times where I had to unplug to reset. I have to send out for repairs now. My 'old' DV-CP703 is great though, no problems. I bought the 704 to take advantage of HDMI switching on receiver and reduce # of cables in my system. Guess I should have left well enough alone.

In case you haven't figured this out yet.... Yes the CP704 does this. And so you don't have to read the whole manual, just turn to pages 25 and 40. :)
