Hi,

after long debate and research, I have decided to go the way of CRT instead of a new digital to get rid of my aging LCD...

The dilemma I am now confronted with is the following:
given a similar tube condition would I be better of going for a (give or take) 350$ more expensive BG808s or stick with a lower rated CRT (such as a 6PG for example)...

The reason I ask is that I am not at all sure of whether I will be able to get a decent 1080p picture out of a BG808s with my limited experience. I am sure 720p will not be a problem but I know 1080p requires more than your basic setup.
In other words, would a BG808s running at 720p offer any advantages PQ-wise compared to a lower ranked PJ capable of 720p that still offers EM focus.
I know it will probably be better where light output is concerned and will also offer slightly better contrast, but would this be worth the added cost if I'm not able to get up to 1080p?

Thx in advance for your answers!

The BArco will give an overall better image than the PG. Brighter, larger tubes, more adjustments. Now if it was a PG Xtra, I'd probably choose the Xtra.

Stop worrying about 1080p!!!! Good lord...it is of no benefit on a crt...1080i is perfectly fine, 1080p will soften your image. 1080p should be left for MP modded 9500's and other projectors of that ilk.

For NEC's and Barco's in the 8" range, 1080i is magnificent....and far easier on the electronics of the projector.

I second a good 1080i setup! I can't imagine expecting or needing anything else out of an 8" CRT. Maybe if I had a G90 I would think differently but with my projector (NEC XG110) 1080i is the sweet spot.

I agree. 1080i looks great on my Marquee 8500. Not really concerned with 1080p.

Thx for your candid answers!

So if I'm not to be concerned with 1080p, I would be better off opting for a lower ranked model seeing as something like the 6PG would also perform this task more than adequately?

I guess it all boils down to pricepoint but from my pov it would seem that at the higher prices that models such as the BG808s or Marquee 8500 go for, they are not really worth it as they do not offer a great deal of benefits @720p or 1080i compared to the lower ranked ones if you're not into tweaking the heck out of em. Or is the PQ enhancement that Curt speaks off such a vast improvement that it does in fact warrant their price and therefore their purchase?

The way I'm looking at it now is to go either for a basic 8" EM machine or go straight to 9" (which is impossible for me right now unfortunately)...

Why do you think the Barco costs more?

As Curt stated it has more to offer otherwise it would not command a higher price.

People think the Barco has bigger tubes.

Pity the colours suck.
