View Full Version : Monoprice 4x2 switch + HD-Tivo + Denon 3808 + Samsung Projector = PROBLEM

I have a crazy issue. I hooked a (rev. 2) Monoprice 4 x 2 HDMI switch to my HT set-up.

Basically, I want to share components between a Samsung 710AE projector and a Panasonic plasma.

The HD-TiVO and the DVD player feed to the Monoprice, then the monoprice sends the signal to the plasma and Denon 3808 respectively.

Here's the issue I am having:

When I am using the projector, I use the Denon as the intermediary. I have no problems with the DVD.

HOWEVER, when I switch the monoprice from the DVD input to the HD-TIVO input, the Tivo RESETS its aspect ratio!

i.e.- The HD-TIVO goes from 720p fixed or 720p hybrid to 480p fixed. So I have to change the settings on the TiVO to get the 16:9 HD picture back.

I've turned off the conversion chip in the Denon, no dice.

I can't figure it out, it's driving me nuts. NO issue with the plasma, BTW.

How on earth can the Denon or projector or the monoprice CHANGE the settings on the HD-Tivo???

Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated!!!

Issue #2- The monoprice switch does NOT switch bitstream audios. It converts every audio signal to 2-channel PCM. i.e.- when I watch a DVD or HD on the Tivo program, it is NOT bitstreamed to the Denon, rather it is sent as 2-channel. I removed the switch and hooked the components direct via HDMI- and it works fine. It's the monoprice switch.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Update. Now the TiVo and BluRay make the screen red. Projector is useless.

So everything works great without the Monoprice 4x2?
Are both Displays (Proj. & Plasma) the same NATIVE resoultion?
If they are not you will always have problems.
My guess is that the Monoprice unit is faking out the sources into thinking that there is only one display.
This can/will cause problems.
Sorry.

I have been looking for someone else who is having a problem with the 4x2 monoprice switch when sending bitstream through the switch and it looks like I have found someone. I am trying to send both audio and video from an xbox360, PS3, and a cable box to either my plasma tv or my AVR which feeds my projector. When watching a movie with Dolby Digital or DTS feeding from xbox360 through the switch to my AVR, the AVR is only getting 2 channel PCM. If I bypass the switch, I get DD or DTS without issue.

Has anyone come up with a solution to this? Does anyone know if any other hdmi switches with dual outputs have this issue?

HDMI was never designed for multiple outputs.
HDMI implementations are all screwed up. They downrez to 480p to "protect" their stupidity.

Plasma is two channe audio. 3808 is multi-channel configured? Try powering on the sources in a different order. This includes the Monoprice. Also switch the two output connectors.

Otherwise forget-about-it. Note that HDMI Org. and Monoprice monitor this forum but choose not to respond.

Good luck corresponding with stall-me Vince of Monoprice too.

Well, after some extensive testing, I am able to get the matrix switch to work with an avr/projector and a plasma and still get multi channel surround.

My system consists of xbox360 w/HD drive, PS3, and SA 8300 cable box. I am switching between a Panny plasma and an Onkyo 605 AVR hooked to a projector.

The first test, I had the source units on inputs 1, 2 and 3 and the panny was on output A and the avr/proj was on output B. I could not get Dolby Digital from my xbox to my avr no matter what I did, even if nothing else was powered. It was only sending 2 channel pcm.

I started experimenting and moved my xbox360 to input 3 and my PS3 to input 4. I then switched the AVR/projector to output A and my Panny plasma to output B. I turned on the projector and avr first, then the switch. I then tuned on the xbox360 and popped in a movie and I can now get dolby digital. If i turn on my PS3 and send that to output A, it sends video and PCM. One thing I don't know with the PS3 is if the sound formats are set to automatic, if it will actually recognize the avr accepts those sound formats with a switch between it. So I set the sound formats to manual and checked off all of the formats that on onkyo 605 supports. I popped in Spiderman to test it and sure enough it was sending 5.1 pcm Dolby TrueHD.

I don't have a need to display both the plasma and the projector at the same time but I did some testing with this as well. Pretty much what everyone else is reporting is it recognizes the tv as a 2 channel device and only sends two channel pcm to both ouputs.

The mod that allows you to keep the source units on is a great idea as that allows you to choose the ouput of the source before you actually turn it on. This would prevent everything getting all FUBARed as soon as you turn on a second display. A stepthrough for the mod would be nice for those of us who don't have as much experience with these types of devices.

I am sending bitstream through the switch to a Onkyo 605 with no issues. I have the Panasonic BD30 and a Toshiba XA2 both using bitstream. I am wondering if there is some setting on the Denon receiver that allows pass through of HDMI audio to your set.
It might have to be set for off. I had a problem with the Onkyo until I re-read the manual.

Good luck corresponding with stall-me Vince of Monoprice too.

They were willing to take the switch back, but at $100, it kind of works.

I circumvented the bitstream audio issue by running the HDMI from BD-30 Blu-Ray player to the Denon 3808.

The Denon outputs to the Monoprice switch, the switch outputs to projector and plasma.

The HD-Tivo, via TOSlink and COMPONENT cable, runs to the Denon as well.

The HD-Tivo runs its HDMI cable to the plasma.

The Xbox360 connects to the Denon via COMPONENT cable and TOSlink. I have an auxillary set of Xbox component cables that I pull out and plug into the back of the 360 in order to play on the plasma.

With the Denon On, I can watch Blu-Ray on the plasma. I can also watch Tivo on the Samsung 710AE, but I have to adjust a setting in the Denon to RGB from Yr Ybr Ybl.

HOWEVER, try as I might, the Blu-Ray player simply does NOT work on the projector. It throws up a red screen.

I have adjusted EVERY setting in the Denon. I have adjusted EVERY setting in the Blu-Ray player- outputs, colors, HDMI, PCM, you name it. I have spent hours screwing around with it.

No dice. I either need to sell the Denon and upgrade to the 4308, SOLELY for the twin HDMI output. Or, I need a Blu-Ray player which can output lossless via TOSLINK or a 2nd HDMI output! The analog outputs are not an option. I'm trying to get AWAY from cables, not add to them!

And I've tried every power cycle order and HDMI port swap possible on the Monoprice.

Really bums me out. As a result, I just don't use the projector as much as I used to.
