View Full Version : Request for More BR Info
Hi:
I am interested in knowing about the different types of BR. I am a little confused, and hopefully someone can help spell out what all the different flavors are.
For instance, I gather that BR+ is just more DMR on top of blu-Ray- is that the only difference? Is there a way to tell BR from BR+?
Second, what are Profiles 1, 1.1 and 2?
I hope this is a thread we can keep the partisanship out of- I am really just interested in info. If all you are going to do is post something like, "Profile 2 is just a pipe dream" or "Profile two is what BR wants to be and HD-DVD is" or whatever, please don't post. I can make those decisions on my own. I want to know the specifics about what the different types of BR are, and which are compatible with what.
Thanks!

William:
Thanks. I love the Internets. :)

BD+ is active copy protection that lives in addition to AACS which is mandatory on BD.

Profile 1 is the basic functionality, if I understand right, essentially Profile 1.1 ("Bonus View") adds PIP, and Profile 2 ("BDLive") adds web connectivity. There's more to it (hardware requirements) but from an end user perspective, that's how I understand it.
OK, so I have a Panny 10A, which I beleive is profile 1. My reading of the Wiki article gives me the impression that one CANNOT upgrade an existing 1 to 1.1 (though I take everytthing in Wiki with a grain of salt). I have upgraded firmware in my Panny, but they will NOT be able to upograde to 1.1, is that correct?
Also, should I have any problems with any future releases of BD, such as BD+?
Thanks!

Correct - you might miss some extras, but in theory you should be able to play the movies..............in theory.
olarmy96 01-08-08, 11:45 AM There are already a few BD+ discs out there. It's optional added protection that studios can use. I believe that Fox put it on a few titles such as The Day After Tomorrow. If you can play that one, you shouldn't have any problems.

Maybe I will try and rent that one, just to see.
I noticed on a Disney Disk- Chicken Little I think, but it could have been Raratoulle, it was some game or something. It would not play, gave me an error screen telling me I could not run it. (It was an extra, NOT the main feature). That was before I did the Panny upgrade to 2.4 firmware.

That's what you'll run into - the movie should play (no certainties @ this point in time) but you might miss some of the features...................importance of that is a personal choice.

That's not a fact but it is very likely to be true. Profile 1.1 players require better hardware than ordinary players. Likewise Profile 2.0 requires even better hardware. If a player has the necessary hardware it could, in theory, be upgraded. For example the PS3 was recently updated to 1.1 and meets (and exceeds) the spec for 2.0 (basically more memory and an ethernet port) so it should get updated to profile 2.0 at some point although there's no guarantees.
