View Full Version : Best 1080i upconverting player and has SACD
John Tremor 01-08-08, 12:57 PM I'm looking for a Hi end player that will do a great job of upconverting my standard DVDs through hopefully component video to 1080i, and also will be able to play SACDs?
I cant find anything New on the market that will do this, unless I get a Blue Ray Sony player since I belive SACD had died.
so, I may have to buy used, recommendations either way here?
Thanks!

The 980 is limited to 480i/480p over component for copy-protected discs. Discs without CSS can be upcaled to 720p/1080i/1080p.
There is a firmware hack for the older 970 (no longer made) which disabled this restriction. Component on the 970 went to 1080i.

John Tremor 01-08-08, 02:37 PM I was only wanting 1080i due to the fact I'm running a CRT front projector.
Is there better quality players out there that would meet my needs? I'm concerned as I'm also an audiophile and would hope to have excellent SACD performance as well as pristine video through the 1080i connection.
Note; that's ok if the player will only output 1080i via HDMI I have a moome card with HDMi.
any other ideas?
Check out the new Pioneer DV-58AV. Up-converts to 1080P, beautiful picture. This unit also has amazing SACD sound. I've had one for about 2 months attached to Sony 52" XBR5. Unit lists for $499.
None of the major brands, including Pioneer and Denon, will upscale over component. These are the brands I would recommend for great upscaling video (over HDMI) and great audio/SACD. The Denon 5910 is the best (you wanted high end), followed by the Denon 3930 and Pioneer 79ai.

Thanks, is it "Beefy" build Quality? Or do I have to get into an Elite you think to get that?
Any Macroblocking issues you've seen with it yet? I dont think pioneers have that issue though, right?

The Denon's scare me with Macroblocking issues, I think I heard they are prone to it becasue of the Farouda processor they use....correct?
Maybe I'll check into pioneer, my Elite DV-05 is awesome, just an old unit though with not even 480 progressive scan or SACD :(
John Tremor 01-09-08, 01:08 AM Ok, just thought of something I dont quite understand, how is the SACD transfered from one of these players? through 5.1 analogue RCA connections? or coaxial digital/fiber just like DVD 5.1 surround from a movie does it? Or do I have options?
Thanks

the Denon 3930 does 1080p upconverting, I could probably save money getting one that just upconverted to 1080i.
any other ideas? I'm concerned about the Denons having the macroblocking bug too. you know if they do anymore? Thanks
The DV-58AV is an Elite model. Weighs about 11 lbs., drawer is very smooth operating. SACD output is analog 5.1 via 6 RCA output jacks. I have not seen any video issues with this unit.
In my HT set-up, I run the HDMI cable to the Sony XBR; digital coax (DD, DTS) and 6 discrete audio cables (SACD, DVD-A) from DV-58AV to Anthem AVM20.

Analog and also through HDMI to a receiver/controller that will handle DSD natively and is HDMI 1.2 or above compliant (Pioneer 94, Onkyo 805/Integra 7.8 and above Marantz 8002 etc.) In other words higher end receivers and controllers from the Japanese models that were introduced in the last 8 months or so). None of the esoteric controller brands will handle DSD.
romeo_214 01-09-08, 01:02 PM Hi John,
As a huge fan of Onkyo products, but not of their lame support for them.. I would recommend to check the DV-SP504 out... It has HD Conversion (to 720p and 1080i) through HDMI output and a Universal (SACD/DVDA) Player. I don't think it could do it over COMPONENT, but It's worth a look.. Specially because there's a deal over amazon about $297 usd w/free shipping..
Hope this helps

The 3930 does not use Faroudja (nor does the 2930 or 5910) so there is no macroblocking concern with this model. SACD can't be passed via optical or coax from ANY player. All players that support SACD will pass data via component, some will also pass data via HDMI.
HTH...

Does it use DV-58AV use Faroudja DCDi? If it does it may have macroblocking issues but since I don't have one I can not say for sure.

I dont think any Pioneers or Elites use Faroudja? Am I correct?

I'll take a look at that, so no macroblocking bug with Onk?
John Tremor 01-09-08, 03:59 PM how about a Sony DVP-NS3100ES? I found one new for $350

John Tremor 01-09-08, 04:16 PM what do you guys think of the Yamaha DVD S2500?

Ok forget it, I found it definately Macroblocks
John,
The Yamaha and Denon 3910 and 2910 use Faroudja and thus may have MB, depending on your display. The Denon 3930, 2930, and 5910, and all Pioneers, do not have MB problems since they do not use Faroudja. You don't state a price, but the 5910 is the absolute best of those mentioned above, although the 3930 is pretty close for a lot less.
What are the bass management options on the Denon 5910 and 3930?
John Tremor 01-10-08, 06:25 PM I was hoping to stay under $500 going used or new, doesnt matter to me
