Hi!

I am new to the whole hdtv, so bear with me if I ask a lot of stupid questions. :p I just ordered a sony kdl-52xbr4 hdtv and I have no idea what to do or what equipment to get to make the most out of my Direct T.V. The DTV receiver model is D-10 300. It has no hdmi outlet and I believe hdmi offers the best pictures. So what are All the options I can take? Please be detail about your suggestion, especially on the equipment e.g. what cables is needed, Pros/Cons. All advice will be greatly appreciated! Have a great day! :)

Q: So what are All the options I can take?
A1: If your DirecTV receiver has no HDMI output, it is likely not a HD receiver. If it is your intention to get Hi-Def over the Satellite, you will most likely have to replace your DirecTV receiver with a HD version. You will get charged more for HD programming over the satellite. Recommend call DirecTV or check their website for offers to existing subscribers.
A2: If you do not intend to subscribe to DirecTV HD service (like me) I highly recommend you connect your HDTV coax jack to an outside antenna to receive free over-the-air HDTV broadcasts, assuming you are within range of some HD or SD digital transmitters. Start with the antennaweb.org or TVfool websites, enter your home address & zipcode and it will tell you where the digital and analog TV transmitters are in relation to your address. You may be surprised by the number of digital stations that are available, I know I was.

You also might want to consider buying an up-converting DVD player (i.e., those with an HDMI output). You will likely need an HDMI interface cable. My Sony Upconverting DVD player came with a 6' HDMI cable and it provides near HD quality video and audio.
