View Full Version : Purple People - How much did you spend?
Kurtiebird 01-08-08, 01:28 PM Posting here, because there is no joint hardware forum...
How much did you spend total going purple? I spent $500 on my HDA1, and $250 on my Samsung BDP1400, for a total of $750.
I'm curious to see if anyone did better than that going red-purple, and how well people did who went blu-purple.
Edit for clarity: mostly, I'm interested in how much you spent on hardware (both hd-dvd and blu-ray).
Monty22001 01-08-08, 01:31 PM $200 on the 360 add-on, and 3 movies after..
So $260 down the drain.
$500 on the 60gig PS3.
I've been purple from almost day one on both sides though I've preferred Blu.
130 HD-DVD movies....approximately $2750.00
5 HD-DVD players.....approximately $1750.00
Enjoying (mostly--except for the stability issues I had) HD-DVD while it lasted...priceless! :D
I've spent much more on BD...250+ movies and 3 BD players. I was hedging my bets...
$250 on my HD-A2 player with 5 free movies
$350 on my 60GB PS3 with 5 free movies
Total investment: $600 for players
A boat load on movies. I own 34 HD DVD's and almost 90 BD movies.
Total investment: approx $2500-2800 on movies
I would say I have about $4000 + invested in HDM at this point. I also upgraded to an HDMI receiver for lossless audio ($400+) a new subwoofer (+350) and a Bluetooth remote (+23)
Mr. Biggles 01-08-08, 01:43 PM December 2006 - $500 for PS3 60GB
November 2007 - $95 for A2
William 01-08-08, 01:44 PM $300.00 for RCA and own 46 HD DVD's (will not buy anymore Beta's, I mean HD DVD's)
PS3 and have 65 BD's with 9 on order (WB's 5 HP's to help support the change)
The_Stig 01-08-08, 01:50 PM PS3 60 GB --> $649 CAD
HD-D3 --> $99 CAD
Blu Rays --> ~60 discs
HD DVDs --> 10 discs
sivartk 01-08-08, 01:54 PM PS3 = $300
HD-D2 = $250
Total = $550
First DVD Player = $525 (circa 1998)
So, I spent less (in real dollars) going format neutral than I did on my first DVD player in 1998 and I have both formats. Sure I spent money on movies, but last I checked they still play in my player :) Plus I can watch the Bourne series anytime I want in HD 1080p :p
ShagMan 01-08-08, 01:58 PM Blu-Ray player $430
HD-DVD player $330
movies: $5,983.16 (yes I keep track)
average per movie $18.99 (315 total)
enjoying all HDM has to offer: priceless!!!
wormraper 01-08-08, 02:00 PM HD-D2 =$249
Phillips BDP-9000 = $225 (bought used off of the forum.)
jandawil 01-08-08, 02:00 PM My signature pretty much says it all.
HD-A1 (refurb) for $147 shipped
PS3 40GB - $299 after $100 Sony Style card credit.
Total $447! Not too shabby. So even if HD-DVD goes buh-bye I'm only out the $147 and I still have 12-15 HD-DVD's I can watch on it including Transformers which alone pretty much makes it worth while.
In total apprx £5000 (uk), Started with Toshiba XA1, then Sony Vaio AR21s notebook, Panasonic DMP-BD10, Playstation 3 (60GB US), Xbox HD DVD drive, and around 70 discs (apprx 50/50 split between HD DVD & BD) :D
PS3, 60GB- $499 (Aug. '07)
Tosh. A2- $160 (Oct. '07)
Total invested on hardware= $659
Originally three 360ao's
now only two so $400
LG Combo drive $300
Venturer HD DVD player $200
~100+ HD DVD @ ~$30 so $3000
~15 BD @ ~$30 so $450
Plus PDVD $120
Plus AnyDVD HD $80
A lot of HDD's and server cost and five HTPC's upgrades ??????
$499 for the 60Gb PS3 and a bunch of titles (5 free, many on BOGO, others just purchased). This was always going to be my primary (possibly only) HD player platform so I don't consider this an investment per se.
But then $178 for the A3. $80 for 5 additional titles (Amazon BOGO). Since the A3 can play DVD's and upscale them pretty well I don't feel put out. I have the PS3 which can also upscale but it can't play PAL DVD whereas I think the A3 can (so long as they are region free).
swanlee 01-08-08, 03:13 PM 360 Add-ON= 200$
174 HD-DVD's X 20$ average= $3480
$3680
Panasonic BD10 = $800
136 BLU-RAY X 20$ Average = $2720

Total= 7200$
This is since November of 2006 which is when I got my 360 Add-on. I got my BLU-RAy player in FEB of 07.
ResOGlas 01-08-08, 03:24 PM $500 for a slow and glitchy HD-A1.
$599 for a 60gb PS3.
ChrisPC 01-08-08, 03:31 PM I was red, then purple, then red, and I'll have to go purple again.
HD-A1
$500
HD-A2
$100
About 50 HD DVDs, mostly BOGOs (sold 10 in '07)
$600
PS3
$600 (sold it in '07 for $400)
About 6 BDs (sold 3 in '07)
$80
360 Add-on
$150 (sold it for $70 before the Warner bombshell)
Total: $1500
I was already planning to trade a few old games/movies in at Gamestop before all this. I did and I got $200 in credit. That'll take the edge off a new PS3.
AustinSTI 01-08-08, 03:34 PM I've been purple from almost day one on both sides though I've preferred Blu.
130 HD-DVD movies....approximately $2750.00
5 HD-DVD players.....approximately $1750.00
Enjoying (mostly--except for the stability issues I had) HD-DVD while it lasted...priceless! :D
I've spent much more on BD...250+ movies and 3 BD players. I was hedging my bets...
Wow - a man who is truly purple!!!
Rainier2 01-08-08, 03:55 PM $99 for A2 and 5 free movies + about 10 movies I got screamin' deals on (worked out to about $15 per movie) = total of $250. Also have Italian Job and 12 Monkeys HD-DVDs unopened I'm gonna return.. got them for $14 a piece at Walmart on Pre-black Friday. I rented before opening, and the transfers aren't so great so they're going back most likely. Also got T2 (import) and Lethal Weapon from family members for X-mas. :)
So didn't spend much.. Definitely keeping all my stuff because it would cost way more to rebuy in Boo-Ray.
EDIT: Oops.. I read the title wrong. :P I'm not purple yet!
mpgxsvcd 01-08-08, 03:55 PM $256 with expedited shipping! I bought the GGC-H20LI HD-DVD/Blu-ray drive from Best Buy online during their $225 sale after Christmas. It comes with PowerDVD and I already had the anyDVDHD so I didn’t have to buy that.
Oh yea there is always the cost of the computer. However, that was given to me as a present. My total cost to go from Red to Purple was $256. My total cost for going to red initially was only $106 since I got the Toshiba A3 from Best Buy for Business during their 5 minute $89 sale. $362 for 2 HD-DVD players and a Blu-Ray player is not a bad deal. There is also the fact that the PC drive can back-up HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs.
Pocket Aces 01-08-08, 03:57 PM 60 GB PS3 for $650 when they were new.
I almost pulled the trigger on an HD-DVD add-on for my PS3 or a Toshiba player about a month ago. Glad I decided to hold off.
I was Blu with a $499 PS3 until I went purple with a $99 A2 player. In addition to the 5 free HD-DVD's (which I have yet to receive, and I wonder now whether they will ever see the light of day), I bought two HD-DVD's on the Amazon BOGO sale. I'll keep what I have, but those will be the last HD DVD's I ever buy.
pclausen 01-08-08, 04:10 PM A1 $499
A2 $99
A35 $400
PS3 20GB $499
PS3 40GB $399
Panny BD30 $440
~70 HD $1750
~50 BD $1250
So about $5336 total, and that doesn't count the Onkyo 885 nor the Denon 3808 I needed to decode the lossless audio and give me HDMI switching in my 2 systems. 2007 was an expensive year to be sure!
shanewalker 01-08-08, 04:12 PM I think I have determined a pretty accurate assessment of what I've anted up at this point...
HD-DVD investments:
Xbox 360 -- $400
Xbox 360 HD-DVD Add-on drive -- $200
25 HD-DVD discs -- approx. $500
Total 'Red' investment (less multi-purpose console hardware) -- $700
Blu-ray investments:
Playstation 3 -- $500
40 Blu-ray discs (note: 1/2 BOGO and 'free' offers) -- approx. $425
Total 'Blue' investment (less 1/2 multi-purpose console cost): $675
So, I'd say I hedged my bets pretty evenly up to this point--and my major hardware purchases all have other uses "no matter what". What color was my parachute? Purple...w/ media center and game controller logo appliques.
$499 60GB PS3
$0 360 Add-on (on loan)
Abou 20 BD movies and 1 HD-DVD
HPforMe 01-08-08, 05:18 PM Canadian funds:
XA2- $999;A1-$492;Xbox 360 $179;Venturer $199; PS3 (Jan. 07 - $599 (60 gb)
HD DVDs approx. 80
Blu Rays approx 60
Won't bother to add up the cost of the latter.
All brought great enjoyment. But it's time to have 1 format and and I'm quite happy Blu Ray is that format.
HD-DVD specific:
$180 for the XBox drive in December 2006
Blu-ray specific:
$300 for the LG dual-format drive in November 2007 (comes with OEM version of PowerDVD)
Common:
$100 for PowerDVD
beyond reckoning for various upgrades, but that comes from the computer budget
If I were to do it again today, the LG drive could take care of all.
Deere2Pop 01-08-08, 05:27 PM 360 AO $160
A35 $330
Philips BR $180
75 HD $900

I don't feel too bad since during the same time I spent over $1800 on my wifes Cricut die-cut machines and cartridges. We just seem to like toys.

BD Total: 468.85
Total Spent: 981.85
Total Spent on my setup: 686.85
Spent on Hardware for Me: 558
I'm bummed that HD took such a big hit this week. Mostly because I just bought my dad an A3. I was hoping he'd get a few good years of Netflix rentals (he hardly buys). Hopefully he still will.
Neo1965 01-08-08, 06:28 PM Personally.
$699 + $499 on two HD-A1s (in canada and US) for home use.
50 HD DVDs (gave away some to my lab) @30 average (including taxes [local] and shipping[amazon]) = 1500. (After June, I bought very few red movies, only matrix + exclusive blockbusters all on release day, and none on Bogo)
So, the damage for me : 2700.
The players still work.
---
If it had gone the other way, my BD damage would be more substantial. But more than half of the BD movies are bought in Bogos, which lessens the cost.
2xPS3 + BDP1000 + 340+ BD movies. = (not a small number)

I don't quite know how much that is but it is a boatload of cash.
First off, the money I spent on HD-DVD was not wasted, not by my count anyway (and since it's my money, my opinion is the only one that counts.)
I spent 200 bucks on the XBOX360 HD-DVD add-on. Maybe 100 bucks on movies.
Seth Gecko 01-09-08, 12:37 AM Ouch why did you make me add it up...

2x BD1200 $1000

Free Playstation 3 80 GB unit ( I had over $500 in store credit at FYE through trading in various video games and dvd boxsets and such. And of course that had the five free blu-ray mail in offer)
Haven't got the mail in movies from either side yet but the hd ones were supposed to ship on the 20th of this month.
I wouldn't know what I spent on the movies. Most were bought in sales or bought used. There were very few that I paid full price for.
obispo21 01-09-08, 12:56 AM $350 - HD-A1
$700 - PS3 (Bought it in a bundle on release week :o )
Roughly 100 or so discs - guesstimate average maybe $15-$16 a disc. About 65% HD DVD, 35% BD. I'll really miss HD DVD if they fade away completely - those early BD releases were sooo crappy. :(
Hardware
Toshiba A3 = $99
PS3 (60 gig) = $599
Software
13 HD-DVD = $16.95
100 BD = ~$1600
I'm into HD-DVD for under $117... total.
Including what I paid for the A3, that's less than $9 per title. I got the A3 for $99 with 11 free movies and I've bought two used movies off ebay for another $16.95 including shipping. So no, I don't regret my late entry into HD-DVD a couple months ago. I'll pick up some other cheap HD-DVD movies off ebay in the future as they become worthless.
Overall I'm glad I bought into HD-DVD and when I did. Although, I wouldn't have done it at a higher price point as I've always felt it the format was going to go belly up. Getting the player and all those movies for $99 gave me access to a few HD-DVD titles I wanted and also let me stick it to Toshiba at the same time... I consider that a win/win situation! :D

Very heartbroken over HDDVD since it was first HiDef disc format on the market...and you know what they say about your 'first love'...
Used (mint) HD-XA1 purchased in early 2007 for ~$300.
Used (mint) BDP-S1 purchased in mid 2007 for ~$650.
32 HD movies (19 red, 12 blu) purchased for ~$550.
$1500 total - not too bad, all things considered.
Timothy Ramzyk 01-10-08, 01:41 AM I've spent $1000 on players and about another $1000 on software between the two formats, but I won't admit it in mixed company.

I technically didn't spend a dime.
My fiancee spent $400 for my HD-A2 (February of 2007), and $600 for my 60 GB PS3 (May of 2007).
It was worth it to her, especially since now she has been able to watch all three PotC movies in HD.
Don't get me wrong. She's watched a number of HD-DVD titles as well with me, and enjoyed them as well.

XA2 - $575, Mar 07
BD30 - $440 Nov 07

How about a vote for keeping the BD/HD-DVD comments constructive. I am just amazed at how someone can accumulate hundreds of basically useless and illogical posts in less than a month on this forum. Of course that isn't the sole providence of our newer members!

36 HD DVDs, 24 Blu-Ray most of these discs were either free, BOGOs, on sale, or bought with store credit from DVD Planet trade-ins. I can count the number of discs I paid full price out-of-pocket cash for on one hand.
Wouldn't change anything. I get to enjoy all available content and don't bother with winner/loser debates.
briankmonkey 01-30-08, 01:20 AM $99 for my HD A3 which included 10 freebies.
$499 for my PS3 with one blu-ray.
I've only purchased a few HD DVD's and a large amount of blu-rays due to blu-rays being more affordable on average plust better quality overall as well. I will only buy must have Universal and Paramount titles on HD DVD until they go blu.

Total gross hardware cost - $1,724
I got $575 from the sale of the PS3 and HD-A1, so my net hardware outlay is $1,149.
Movies - 59 Blu-rays, 42 HD DVDs
Don't know the total I've spent for all of them, but I just went back and added up all of the movies I've bought from Amazon (47 total), they come to $668. 23 movies were free with players; that leaves 31 unaccounted for. I'd guess another $600 - $650 for those, since I bought them in local stores. Should make my software total about $1,268 - $1,318 for all 101 movies. Plus, two of those are actually 3-disc sets (Spider-man trilogy on BD, Mission Impossible Trilogy on HD DVD).
jhbanks 01-31-08, 02:12 PM Toshiba HD-A3 for $150 back in November (for HD-DVD) +10 free movies.
Sharp 46d64u for $1199 just before Christmas (for HDTV).
Sharp bd-hp20u for $0 in January per Sharp promotion (for blu-ray) +5 free movies.
About 15 additional HD-DVD movies, averaging about $10 each.
We'll slowly be replacing our favorite VHS tapes with hd/blu-ray discs, as available and price willing - otherwise continue with sd dvds if the price delta is large - really can't argue with the upconversion quality. Then eliminate the VHS player once and for all.
I kind of made it on a shoe string into the realm of HD...
In 2006:
+200 € sold old Panasonic S97 DVD player
-275 € bought an xbox 360 premium
+/-0 € received an HD DVD addon for the xbox as a christmas present
In 2007:
+400 € sold the xbox with addon
-300 € bought a Toshiba HD-E1 HD DVD player
-350 € bought a 60 GB PS3 blu-ray player
-20 € bought the remote for the PS3
+500 € sold the PS3
-380 € bought a 40 GB PS3 blu-ray player
-----------------------------
-225 € Total
So I have spend 225 Euro to become format neutral.
In this time I watched about 40 HD DVDs and 40 blu-rays. However I kept less than 10 blu-rays, while I kept more than 20 HD DVDs. The rest I sold. Looking at the current release plans I will probably sell my PS3 again and wait another year for a real 2.0 standalone blu-ray player - or even better a nice dual format player from Marantz.
swtfman 02-06-08, 12:05 PM RCA HDV5000 $499
Toshiba HD-A2 $99
XBox HD-DVD add-on (for HTPC) $179
PS3 80GB w/Motorstorm $499
$1276 for 3 HD-DVD players and 1 Blu-Ray player.
kevivoe 02-06-08, 02:00 PM Players alone cost me $1350. Discs to date cost about the same $1350 with 50 HD DVD's and 5 Blu-ray (having only been purple 20 hours now). Total $2700 since May 2006 and 3 players (2 still in service).
yellowlt4 02-06-08, 11:47 PM HD-A2 = $350 w/5 free
40gb PS3 = $300 w/5 free
39 HD DVD's = ~$650
127 Blu-ray discs = ~$1300
Thanks to the BOGO's and Amazons very generous price guarantee my Blu-ray software was considerably cheaper than my HD software thus making me lean Blu.
DaGamePimp 02-07-08, 05:29 AM A1 on launch day $540
20g PS3 shortly after launch $540
A3 $215 with 10 free movie deal

So roughly $1800 total
rabident 02-07-08, 04:57 PM $500 for A1
$350 for PS3
Bought 5 movies total. HD-DVD. $150.
edit: forgot $30/month for Netflix
If they were available on Bluray, I would have bought them instead, assuming PQ/AQ were equal.
I will buy more when the uncertainty of the format war is over.
Total = $300
$100 HD-A2
$200 BDP1000
$300 for the Lite-on SATA Drive

Rachael Bellomy 02-07-08, 05:48 PM Edit for clarity: mostly, I'm interested in how much you spent on hardware (both hd-dvd and blu-ray).
Have ya got a cow, cow, cow, calculator I could borrow. I have a flock, err herd of each....thousands. I'm stille very curious purple.
Scott-C 02-09-08, 07:16 AM HD DVD: Toshiba HDA1: $499 (approx. August 2006)

lgans316 02-09-08, 09:06 AM Recently I have spent enough to get beaten by my better half. Damn those deals and damn America.
Everdog 02-09-08, 07:26 PM I bought an A2 for $150 and a used PS3 for $250. That's less than most stripped down blu-ray players. I may buy a 2nd 20GB PS3 when I find another one for under $250, and I plan on scooping up every HD DVD I can that is priced under $12.
I did also buy a XA2, but sold it just before the new year...which I regretted for about 10 days and then Warner made a certain announcement.

Toshiba HD A2: $99 Walmart
Sony PS3: $399 Walmart
Toshiba HD A3: $100 Circuit City
Toshiba HD A30: $140 Wal-mart
I have sold my add on and my HD A2 was returned for $198.00 refund. I own 50 Hd dvds and 11 Blu rays. So $640 total for the players and guesstimating here on the movies some were BOGO and gifts so I would say $400-$600. So around $1200. Damn I need to be shot lol.
Cheers

Cuhulin 02-11-08, 04:14 PM Toshiba HD-A2: $129
Sony S300: Used an old Target gift certificate that I got from a car dealer a couple years ago and wasn't using, plus $32.

I was thinking about figuring this out and you have helped me to decide to do some quick math.
Sony BDP-S1 $1000
Tosh HD-XA2 $799
29 HD Discs (five free-some bought from Amazon and some Best Buy) 24 x $25 average =$600
Blu 84 discs (Amazon/Best Buy) $25 average=$2100
Total=$4499 (not including HDMI cables and I think I am a little low on the discs). Two more on the way from Amazon.
Don't regret it. Will continue to pick some additional HD discs to round things out.
