Hi! My Panny RP82 died and dont know if it is worth getting fixed vs. getting a new player. I recently got a Panny px58 600u. Great tv! Only 720, not 1080. I have looked at Oppo Toshiba and Onkyo. I am having a hard time understanding witch way to go.I want upscaling yet I am trying to avoid communication problems, and any other problems.( yes I know I dont want too much) Is there one player better at scaling to 720 pannys better than others?:confused:I am hooking up to an Emotiva DMC-1( external HDMI), and a MPS-1:D.
Any and all help and information would be greatly appreciated.
You guys rock out there!:)

Wow...yours lasted a while. Great player.
The new Panasonic players are just as good.
Since you have a HD screen, get an HD player of some sort.
BR for future proofing?
HD DVD for a bargain pickup.

Thanks Lee Heytow, but I want a player that upconverts to at least 720p.
Also I am going to have to upscale over component. Dont want to but HDMI slots are full.I know this makes a big difference. Any body with ideas on Great players?

Instead of starting a new thread, this is basically my deal. Delightful (2002-build date, intalled since '03) RP82 is exhibiting 02 errors, and it's clearly an actual motor issue (manual spinning sometimes does not work). It's dying, but someone tell me I need to get a new player, vs. fixing it / getting it fixed.

Not excitied about BluRay yet; 95% of the stuff we watch is SD only as yet. Maybe the Oppo 971? Attached to a Panny plasma TH42PX75U, so only 720p if you want to give me grief about that.

Oh, and I'll have a parts-only RP82 for sale soon if anyone is interested. :)

What is your price range? Oppo 983 for high or the Toshiba xde-500 for middle range?

Oh, forgot that. Right now I'd think around $200 if practical.

The wife likes to keep reminding me that the RP82 only lasted 3 years (I have lost the receipt, but am sure it's more like 5) so pushing into $400 is iffy now.

Aw... don't be mean about my budget. I might be able to stretch in a bit if the old Panny sticks with it a little longer, anyway.

Seriously, I have not been tracking to SD players for a while now and am trying to catch up. So without sounding like a total "what do I buy?!" newb: really how much better is the 983 than an older (cheaper!) 98/981-series Oppo player? They all look nice, and I do indeed just have a 720 monitor (with a nice-looking scaler, though).

Thanks for all the input.

Note that the 970 and 971 are out of production.

The 980 is a bargain at $169. Both component and HDMI, USB port, 480i over HDMI if you want it.

The 981 at $229 has a smoother, more film-like image, better deinterlacing. The 980 looks sharper, but has rougher deinterlacing. The 981 uses a Faroudja chip which can enhance macroblocking on some displays, most often reported by DLP owners.

The 983 at $399 has the best deinterlacing, best image. Film-like without being soft. Whether it is worth the extra dollars is a subjective consideration.

If you need PAL playback, the 981 and 983 are better than the 980.

I have one of each and could be happy with any of them, but since I have the 983 that is what I use most often.

Thank you! I have been reading reviews trying to get all this information in a useful format, and also failed entirely to find that chart on the oppo site.

AV Member Sango can fix your RP82 for probably minimal cost. I suggest you give him a shout. Sango is a first class guy based on my own experience with him. Otherwise you may want to read the Toshiba XD-E500 thread and see if that one is not a good option for you.

I am still using an XP-30.

Panasonic made some of the best SD players ever made.
Trully the BMW of DVD players. Worth fixing in my opinion....:)

I picked up a Toshiba XD-E500 and am very happy with it. Definintely worth checking out before you pay a higher price for anything else.
