I am an HDDVD support that has decided to cut his losses and look into getting a DF player. The recent CES announcement of a potentially sub-$400 Samsung DF player gives me some encouragement that there will potentially be even cheaper options available. I currently have the 360-add on and it has been sufficient for me since I have an old-school non-hdmi 1080i Phillips HDTV. I recently upgraded my sound system to the Samsung AS720 that allows for HDMI audio.

Here is my question. Is it possible to use HDMI strictly for audio (to the receiver) and component for the video? I'm sure there are many variables in this that I am not taking into consideration but am just trying to get some info on this as I make the next move. If there is already a forum about this, I would appreciate someone point me in the right direction, I couldn't find anything.

Sure it is. You can run HDMI from the HDM player to your receiver and then component video from the receiver to the TV. I'm not sure what the benefit would be of running both component and HDMI out from the HDM player, unless you wanted to run component straight to the TV for some reason (I'm also not sure that you will get anything out of the component output if HDMI is active). Running audio and video to your AVR via HDMI and then routing it as you wish is definitely the way to go.

Right that is my question, will component work when HDMI is active? I know that I cannot run HDMI to my receiver and then output into component, that isn't possible (and my receiver woun't do it anyway).

can this be done with HDMI also? (trying to save cables)
