I am sure this has been asked but I did some searches and did not find anything.

My rear proj. LCD is compatable with 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i.

If I were going to get a DVD upconverter would i be better off getting one that supports 1080i since that is the only 1080 resolution that my TV supports.

Thanks

I've always been suspicious of 1080i from SD-DVD players because of the number of steps to get to it. As far as I know scaling always takes place in the progressive domain, so it goes something like:

480i (on the DVD) -> 480p -> 1080p -> 1080i (all in the player) 1080i->1080p in the display and another scaling to the native resolution of the display if it is not 1080.

That said, people use it and maybe some gear likes it. I've noticed that CRT users often like interlaced signals.

What is the native resolution of your projector? If it is something like 720 or 768 you might do just as well with a 480i, 480p or 720p signal. But you should try all the combinations to see what works best.

According to the manual it is 1280 Line Horiz Resolution

I would guess it's native resolution is 1280x720. A 720p signal from a good player might be your best option.

Thanks for any suggestions on a player. I assume to get the full 720p I would have to go with HDMI or would component work. I only have one HDMI available on my hitachi and my DVR is hooked to it. Thanks again

HDMI. Upconverting over component is no longer allowed for reasons of Digital Rights Management.

You can get HDMI switchboxes.

Price range? Any interest in PAL? Or HD-DVD or Blu-Ray?

I was looking mostly just a upcoverting DVD player. Around the $100 range. I know you can get them cheap but I would like to get a good band for the buck. I did not want to invest a large amount especially since I am just 1280x720. I could spend a little more if I needed to. Thanks

wmcclain I did get the HDMI switch that you had suggested.

One other note is for my sound I have a Onkyo reciever with a 5.1 speaker configuration it has the ability to go 7.1 but I dont think I will ever go to that. I also want a DVD that does DTS also. Thanks again.

In that range the Sony NS75 and NS77 are well-liked here. I don't know about their audio capabilities.

For $169 I've been pleased with the Oppo 980. It has 7.1 and DTS, although I don't use those features.

I have the Sony NS77 and it does a fantastic job upconverting to 1080p or 1080i. I tried it on both Sony 40" LCD and Samsung 40" and they both look excellent.

The Costo NS72HP seems to be the exact same one but with HDMI cable.

Frys has it for $79 last week but I think CC has it for $95 now.

alright i have a 1080i front projector unit and the only hd option i have is to use the component input (no hdmi input). im looking at getting a dvd upconverter, but my question is.... do you have to use the hdmi output in order to get the 1080i? or can you get the same quality by using the component output?

Upconversion over component is no longer allowed for reasons of Digital Rights Management.

There are some older hackable players that allow this. The Oppo 970 has been popular for this purpose.

Note that it is not mandatory to do scaling in the player. You can give your projector 480i or 480p and it will do the scaling.

If there are such things then I suppose they work. I've seen references here but I don't know the details.

I'm surprised they are allowed because it means removing HDCP.

Again, an upscaling dvd player gives you some options, but they do not get you into a new realm of SD-DVD quality over what 480i and 480p gice you.
