View Full Version : How do we get back to the Science, and the old AVS??
I know there is a core group here that still remembers what AVS is all about, and yearns for the old days without the bashing and special interests that has overtaken this site
I still think we can bring some semblance of normalcy back: if we don't, we will be as Newton Minow described a vast wasteland.
Remember this post?
Lee Stewart 01-08-08, 07:14 PM You having a problem in the other forums? Like Plasma or LCD or FPTV or HDTV Programming?
Or the forums covered by HD DVD and BD?
Cause if that is the case - not until the format war officially ends. Sometime this year.

The rest of the site is pretty much the same... it's this part only (and particularly now) that emotions run high.
Things were pretty good after the "shut down" of this area. I think the warner announcement just threw us back to where we were.
I think it'll cool down again. (In a month or two)
archibael 01-08-08, 07:15 PM Emotions are running high right now with the turmoil in the HDM market. I stopped reading this subforum months ago because of the insanity.
I give it War Over + 3 months and we will be back to the 2004 tone again.
phansson 01-08-08, 07:18 PM The only problem on AVS is the HDM/Blu Ray/HD DVD forums. I think the rest of the site is pretty civil.
Lets get this stupid war over!!!!!!!
Perhaps another timeout for the HDTV/Blu/HDDVD forum is in order.
sharkcohen 01-08-08, 07:21 PM I think AVS should shutdown the HDM areas until the format 'war' is over. It's gotten ridiculous in here.
user friendly 01-08-08, 07:21 PM Your usertitle is one of the many reasons this section of AVS is the way it is.
I say, just let it ride. Things will smooth out and everyone will be holding hands.

NG - CES is still going strong. Biggest week of the year for CE releated forums.
Once CES ends and people step back and take a deep breath, we should turn return to a bit of normalacy. Emotions are too high right now, but there are a lot of exciting HD developments on the horizon.
NG - CES is still going strong. Biggest week of the year for CE releated forums.
that don't mean they (AVS mods, admins etc) can't post relevant posts.
For us mere users.. lock it up.
Mr. Biggles 01-08-08, 07:25 PM This forum is the worst by far, and as others have just said it will end right along with the format 'war'. At least hopefully.
Then we can say goodbye to the post whores and other pond scum that spend all day in here inciting and provoking others.
I for one can't wait for them to crawl back under the rock from which they came.
rcase13 01-08-08, 07:49 PM Been lurking and posting here a long time (mostly lurking) and it has really gone down hill. I don't understand why. In the old days folks would go out of their way to be courteous.
Lately I have been searching for another AV Science forum just for this reason and have been unable to find one. It would be nice for things to go back to the way it was.
This forum has been so helpful for me. All the way back when I was researching the first gen DLPs... and then again when my color wheel promptly bit the dust... And now I am getting all kinds of information on CIH projectors... The mindless posting really seems to be tied to the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray threads and the XBox 360/PS3 forums.
Once the war is really over I would think there wouldn't be anything left to fight about.
But you really have to hand it to the moderators and others that run this site. They are stuck with the impossible task of moderating children. You know it's bad when they have to give us time out. I don't even put my five year old in time out anymore...
Once the war is really over I would think there wouldn't be anything left to fight about.

apparently you have missed such oldies but goodies as
LP V CD
CRT V Digital
Which speaker sounds best!

Fights will always exist. Just not to the gaggle that was Blu V HDDVD.

LOL yeah I guess I did forget about those days... What is the phrase? "we see the past through rose colored glasses?"
I was here for the CRT vs Digital wars! But they weren't this bad were they?
BritInVA 01-08-08, 08:11 PM As other have said - its just this sub forum.
Maybe if we can all take an extra effort while things are settling down to scale down the victorious cries at every minor non-news event and stop reacting to every deliberate act of stirring things up.

1080i vs. 720p anyone.... anyone? :)
SirDrexl 01-08-08, 08:36 PM Ending the format war won't stop it. The hot new trend is to spread doom and gloom about HD discs in general, in favor of downloads.
pellucidity 01-08-08, 08:36 PM not until the format war officially ends. Sometime this year.
Sorry, Lee - I think that's a very revealing statement. Congratulations, though, for facing up to it.
DrCrawn 01-08-08, 08:36 PM Another vote for locking this area. Way too many people are not "taking the high road" in their posts, and I can imagine it is incredibly overwhelming for the moderators.
When the format war is over, we can go back to LCD vs. plasma wars.
Sorry, AVS forums will always have members that are passionate about their hobby.

Hey - wars do not go on forever. There is ALWAYS a winner and a loser (except for ttat long war that the Black Plague ended;))
Time for people to accept it and move on. Just want to see what the remaining studios and Toshiba do. That's all.
Too many of these new threads are nothing more than Gloat Threads and AVS, to my surprise, is allowing it.
trbarry 01-08-08, 08:52 PM 1080i vs. 720p anyone.... anyone? :)
Are we allowed to mention COFDM yet.

I didn't want to be too pointed, but it was the timescale you mentioned that was so revealing.

Everyone's rage on this topic is driving all those banner graphics to load, reload, and load again. AVS is making a fortune off of this action!
ccotenj 01-08-08, 09:08 PM dunno, but i wish it would happen soon...
yes, there are passionate debates about other topics... but very rarely do they reach the downright childish level that has been the norm in the hdm forums...
Lee Stewart 01-08-08, 09:11 PM I didn't want to be too pointed, but it was the timescale you mentioned that was so revealing.
6 days or 6 months. Is there really any difference?

Exactly, the admins love this kind of traffic. Same with blu-ray.com. There going to be packed full for a long time and it's only going to get busier.
Ad revenue makes serious $$$
rboster 01-08-08, 09:18 PM As others have mentioned this isn't the first time, nor only area that has experienced discent and problems. Just ask Steve B., who used to mod the tweaks forum. The tweaks area was one of my fav. forums to learn about low cost and high cost forms of tweaking one's system. Were some of the products low impact...sure...but it was done with the perspective of being open to any ideas and tweaks. Then it started going downhill...a group formed in the tweak forum, whose sole purpose seemed to want to debunk any and all ideas that were brought up....all under the name of "science". It got to the point that Steve left as a mod. and that forum has never been the same since.
So we are always going to have one form of problem membership to deal with....but as others have said, this area seems to draw more problems than most (if not all ) of the other forums.

Lee Stewart 01-08-08, 09:19 PM How do we get back to the Science, and the old AVS??
By posting Science oriented threads . . . as opposed to "what do you think" threads about the formats or the war.
I think the rules need to be spelled out more clearly or updated also. I just got an infraction for something I can't even find in the rules!

Even though some productive information has come from that thread, the whole basis of the thread is pure garbage.

sivartk 01-08-08, 11:22 PM I'm just tired of the "what if...", "what do you think...", "what should x do...." threads.
Let the big corporations decide what to do based on what their shareholders want. The speculation is getting ridiculous.

Hmmmm....so this is a 'high road' thread....but it contains many veiled innuendos bordering on the inflammatory topics perpetuated in the very threads this one denigrates....
How does that go...."those that live in glass houses should not cast stones"

The DIY screens section was rather bad as well for some time... soo many claims of miraculous physics defying concoctions without a shred of measurement to back them up.
Subotnik 01-09-08, 12:19 AM Strict and even-handed moderation would be a good start in getting this place under control.

Rainier2 01-09-08, 12:23 AM Two words: Sony Fanboys. They are just as rabid on gaming sites... They are universally known to be the most vicious fanboys in existence. They heard people were arguing on these forums so they migrated here.
:)
This medium was ushered in on the back of the PS3 and these forums are paying the price.
The narcissistic nature of of these posters (xbox ones as well) has made reading these boards too much of a chore lately.

Are you implying that, had forums like this existed back in the days of VHS/Betamax, we wouldn't be seeing similar types of behavior? I find that hard to believe.
It's too pat a response to blame game console owners - there's just as much childish pom-pom waving around here from the people with $1000 standalones and three hundred HDM discs as there are with a single console/add-on and a pair of discs. They might be contributing to the problem, but they are not the source of the problem.
The real source of the problem is that both sides in this format war have been pushing propaganda out for years now, and given the proclivity of the general populace to see and hear only what they want, you end up with a bunch of people who have firm preconceptions about all sorts of things, right or wrong. And when you have a place where those people can get together and put those opinions on display - this is the result.
Neo1965 01-09-08, 02:14 AM Unfortunately, usually a sentient pot can see that a kettle is black, but the pot itself almost never recognizes the blackness within itself.
Good thing that sentient pots don't really exist.
Always speak of pots and kettles in hushed tones, lest we all be covered in soot.

Same here. I have nothing against HD DVD and am a BD supporter, but it was so nice, for a while anyway, after these forums were shut down for several days.
I say do it again as well. Shut it down.

While it shouldn't have to be done I agree with you; shut it down for a while. I have noticed that any number of forums in various subjects on different sites have devolved to pure nastiness much as this sub forum has.
trbarry 01-09-08, 06:36 AM Way back when I was getting divorced I was warned that lawyers would sometimes purposefully escalate the bickering because they stood to profit by it. I contend that paid lobbyists on forums are in a similar situation, sometimes using dirty tricks to start fights and get threads or entire forums shut down.
I personally think the solution is to issue warning strikes and then suspensions for obvious offenders after 3 strikes.

markrubin 01-09-08, 07:43 AM Surprised this thread is still here: need to close it
This has been a very busy week with the WB announcement and CES: things will settle down soon I hope, to a kinder, more technically oriented AVS: and we hope to do that without another shutdown
Thank you
