Since Hddvd made dolby digital plus and true hd decoding mandatory in its players since the start heading to the blu ray will be a downgrade in sound except for disney titles that are in uncompressed pcm ( I believe the only studio releasing in this format since sony went truehd) unless we spend alot of money on new players or get the fancey hdmi 1.3 receiver with onboard decoding of advanced codecs. Most of us do not have money for this type of equipment. This was hddvd advantage. It offered high quality for a low price (good for consumers). However most studios chose to go a different route. It leaves a bitter taste in my mouth and makes me wonder about the future of hdm on disc with blu ray in the lead.

Warner released all 5 Harry Potter movies on Blu-Ray with uncompressed PCM.

DD+ on HD DVD technically isn't any better than DD on Blu-Ray.

That being said, I do empathize with the OP. It would have been nice to see Blu-Ray make player support for the latest audio encoding mandatory. But I guess that is what Profile 2.1 will be for :(

Since 63% of Blu-Ray movies are PCM/lossless vs. HD DVD having only 23% PCM/lossless I think it is advantage Blu-Ray, just get the right player.:)

The efficiency improvement of the codec was designed for and really only needed for television broadcasts. Where space and bandwidth isn't really an issue there is no end gain to audio quality by using DD+ over DD of the same bitrate.

I believe in your percentages of lossless vs non lossless, but when hd dvd used 1.5 mbps ddplus it was practically as good as losses virtually indistinguisable only on close listening. It was bad to compare true hd to dd+ with warner titles because they were using a much lower bit rate dolby digital plus. However they did have true hd on most big releases. Transformers won best audio using dolby plus. My point with lossless sound on blu ray is that even though in the past there were alot of uncompressed tracks. The future does not look good for this and I believe Disney may be the only ones and maybe warner for now at least. Warner will probably go true hd since that what they used for hd dvd and Disney will probably change as well. Again it looks like a big upgrade in equipment from your basic blur ray player to enjoy high quality sound.

Where the heck do you get that idea? That is totally false. I think you are confusing the DD+ on BLU-RAY (which uses a core + extensions architecture) compared to DD. DD+ on HD does not use the core + extensions setup, and also runs a higher bit rate on HD DVD. It's much, MUCH better than DD.

It's much, MUCH better than DD.I guess you didn't read my response to jmdajr, and to be honest with you, I've already discussed this topic to no end back when HD DVD supporters were using this as an argument why HD DVD had superior sound. At that time I was actually arguing the same side as yourself until I was proven wrong.

I didn't say that hd dvd had superior sound but had players that delivered excellent sound for a low price. Most of us with blu ray players are forced to hear legacy dts core from dts master hd or legacy 448 kbps dolby digital core from the true hd with out high end players or advanced equipment. Unless were fortunate to have uncompressed pcm which was the norm earlier in blu ray's life but fading with time.
