I'm looking at buying the Panasonic DVDS53K, Pioneer DV-400V-K, Samsung DVD-1080P7, or a Sony DVPNS78H. Which one would offer the best PQ when being upscaled to 1080P using a HDMI cable on a panasonic pz700 plasma? thanks

If you don't believe in UPSCALING can we know how you have your home theater set?

If you don't believe in UPSCALINGYou may have missed the point. "(Up)Scaling" is a necessary function in any system. The point is that every digital display already has a builtin scaler which already up/down scales whatever signal it receives to its own native format.

If you have a decent display, its circuitry will be as good as or better than the scaler contained in a DVD player so an "upscaling" DVD player is completely redundant. A consumer who is unaware of these facts is certainly not one who will appreciate the nuances of a superior DVD player scaler in any case and will most certainly not know how to setup the combination for optimum performance. For instance, if you cannot defeat the display scaler (as is the case in ALL "768" plasma/LCD displays) you are now scaling at least twice. This guarantees a crappy outcome.

99% of the buying public have no idea what they are looking at!

Hell, most of them now think that 4:3 programming stretched to fill a 16:9 screen is "hi def". I have an intelligent, rich, executive-level, genetics engineer friend who believes his $70 Walmart DVD player is hi-def because it says "HDMI" on the front panel.

Peerloer fur iet swine. can we know how you have your home theater set?Fair question.

I have two projectors mounted above one another in my theatre, one for DVD reproduction and the other for general HDTV. Both are optimized for SMPTE brightness on my 92" Stewart Filmscreen Grayhawk screen using neutral density filters, etc.

I use a Bravo D1 (http://www.avrev.com/equip/vinc/index.html) SD DVD player 1:1 pixel-mapped (854x480@47.95Hz) via DVI to a D65-calibrated InFocus IN72 (http://www.projectorreviews.com/infocus/play-big-in72/) 480p projector. This is a "purest" approach; the image retrieved off the DVD is digitally mapped directly to the projector DMD without modification. The 48Hz (47.95Hz) refresh rate eliminates 3:2 pulldown altogether and, hence, there is no image judder. (Technically it uses 2:2 pulldown which is equivalent to the 5:5 pulldown offered in the new 120Hz displays.)

My second projector is a D65-calibrated Yamaha DPX-1300 (http://www.ultimateavmag.com/videoprojectors/406yamaha/) 720p. With the exception of my DVD setup, it is perhaps the best projector I have ever seen. I generally use it with my HD STB and HD-DVD player.

I haven't yet gone to a 1080p projector as my screen and seating positions are permanent and fixed and it is not likely that I will be able to discern any increase in resolution from my current 13.5ft viewing distance.

Hope this helps. ;)

Yeah, it really helped a lot. Actually I have learned a lot in this forums. By reading this forums I came to realize why my Panasonic S97 dvd player at 480p looked better in my XBR4 46" Sony display than in upconversion mode at 720p or 1080 and that was because it seems my XBR4 does a better job upscaling at its native 1080p resolution than my S97 dvd player. As I am having out of sync issues with the S97 (mostly because of the Faroudja chip) I recently bought a Sony DVP-77H dvd player and I am not going to let it do the upconversion, just let it do the 480i to 480p conversion and then let my display do the rest...

i have the 400V and am quite happy with it. it's hooked to my 1080p Sharp D64, and i've tried sending it both 480i and 1080i, both look great to me and i can't tell which one is better. the 400V is a great player if for no other reason than the fact that it gives you so many resolution options to output.

if anyone has any ideas on which resolution would be best for me to output, i'm all ears.

Folks - need help. My apologies if this is below the level of discussion...

I've spent the last week reading every post on LCD TV's and FINALLY went with the Samsung 5265. I'd like to get a DVD player that will look good and complement the TV. I thought I go cheap since I hear all this talk about Blue Ray / HD DVD and am planning to wait till prices drop on this format.

I came across a Denon 1730 open box and bought it for $60 (along with a $70 HDMI cable ((is this necessary? its a Monster Cable M650HD??)).

I brought the DVD player home and found out that it only goes up to 1080i while the Denon 1740 goes to 1080p. Am I missing out on performance by going with an older model? (I don't need the theorethical interlacing / deinterlacing / upscaling / upcoverting discussion as it makes my head hurt). I understand that native 1080p is better than 1080i; But regular DVD's are not native 1080p right? So...

Based on trying to get the best out of my 5265F while waiting for Blue Ray / HD DVD to mature - Should I spend a bit more and a DVD player that outputs 1080p? OR just stay with this 1730 that does upto 1080i. Or should I just get a Blue ray already...

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

HDMI cable is best, but that price isn't the best. Check out the HDMI cables from www.monoprice.com - they'll do the exact same thing as your $70 cable. May save enough to get that 1080p player, but I think that your TV will do a fine job of deinterlacing the 1080i signal (unless you just want to spend the extra $$?). Enjoy the new TV :)

Thanks,

I'm buying a new cable on line and retuning the monster cable.
