I just picked this up, but cant find any information on if it upconverts to 720p over component or is it hdmi only?

im thinking its hdmi only which would explain my mediocre picture over component cables.

I'm not familiar with the model, but in general upconversion over component is no longer allowed for reasons of Digital Rights Management.

There is no reason for 480i or 480p to look mediocre unless the player is particularly bad, or the display is bad at deinterlacing and scaling.
