Given rackspace considerations, I can have only one DVD player in my rig. I have very specific needs, and that is for 480i over HDMI, SACD playback, and DVD-A playback...both with gapless.

Is there even one such player on the market? I know the Oppos do gapless SACD now, but not gapless DVD-A.

I do not care if the player supports DSD over HDMI, I don't mind my SACDs getting transcoded to PCM.

Playing songs that segue without inserting a brief silence in between. For examples, see Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (SACD) and The Beatles - Love (DVD-A).

Oh. You mean tracks that are part of the same overall song? They should flow together and don't sometimes? I guess I've never heard the gaps because I'm still a little confused? :) I don't recall hearing anything out of the ordinary compared to the CD or LP.

On disc, yes. But on my first DVD-A player it hiccupped between every track. So if Track 1 was an Intro of some sort that gaplessly plays to Track 2, the player would hesitate for .5 to 1 second between the two.

RickI have not noticed such a problem with any player or disc but it may be that I have not chosen the appropriate samples.

I think it's a non-issue nowadays. I've only owned 4 players capable of hi-res audio, and I believe only one exhibited this issue - my Panasonic RP91.

So my advice to Michael St. Clair would be to purchase an Oppo 980 or 981 and give that a whirl. That's what I'm doing for my setup.

I own a Denon 3910, and while I love it to death, it 1: doesn't do 480i over HDMI, and 2: doesn't do SACD over HDMI whether PCM or DSD. #1 isn't an issue for me as I almost exclusively watch HD media nowadays, but #2 is.

Since I've just moved to an Integra 9.8 and it lacks i.link inputs, I'll need a new player. So I've placed an order for the Oppo 980.

I had an Oppo 971 and even with the latest firmware it still had an issue with DVD-A (SACD did get patched for gapless about a year ago). Maybe I'll give one of the new ones a try soon.
