View Full Version : Separate UHF & VHF antennas - placement on mast? Also FM questions.

I am currently using a Channel Master UHF/VHF/FM antenna that can't quite pull in some midrange digital signals (~40 miles away) that I should be able to receive. I am planning to move to separate antennas: a CM4228 (UHF) and Winegard YA-1713 (VHF). They will be placed on the same 10' mast and combined to a single feed with either a CM7777 or a UVSJ. Which antenna should be on top?

Also - will the YA-1713 capture FM signals, or do I need a separate FM antenna as well? I'm not excited about having three antennas on the same mast, but I want better signals than what I currently have. If I need a separate FM antenna, are there any mast-mountable FM antennas that provide good bidirectional coverage? There are stations to the south (~40 miles) and north (~80 miles) that I would like to pull in.

Or are there other UHF/VHF/FM solutions I should consider?

Thanks.

The UHF is usually always placed on top. Go to the Winegard website and look at their FM antennas, also the UHF/VHF/FM combos. Type "FM antennas" in their search window and all they have will come up, separate FM's and combos. They have a number to choose from. Your ch. 7-13 VHF probably would not work well enough.

I definitely wouldn't count on getting FM with the VHF-Hi antenna.

You should get a dedicated FM antenna.
I don't know how powerful the FM stations are, but I think an Antennacraft FM-6 antenna (http://www.solidsignal.com/prod_display.asp?PROD=FM6) would suffice (it's only $21.99). If your feeling extreme, you could get a Winegard HD-6065P (http://www.solidsignal.com/prod_display.asp?PROD=HD6065P) ($78.99) or an Antenna Performance Specialties APS-13 ($200 at http://www.antennaperformance.com/)

Thanks bozey45 and mattdp. I think I will give this FM antenna a try and bring in the signal on a separate feed: http://fmdxantenna.com/proddetail.php?prod=FMDipUS

I ordered the Winegard YA-1713 and also a Antennas Direct 91XG. After reading more about the 91XG vs. the CM4228, I think the 91XG is the better choice for my location.

Cheers.
