My parents have a ski home in a small Vermont town and they just upgraded their TV from an old 19" tube to a Vizio VX32L (the one sold in Costco). The cable is serviced by a small company and I emailed the owner regarding how to get an HD signal (there are no cable boxes).
He responsed saying that in order to receive and tune in the HD streams my parents will need a QAM tuner either built into the set or I can buy an external one.
I have no idea what that means or even if the TV has one. Here's a link to the specs on the TV.

Can some advise if this is OK as is or what else I need to do?
Thanks,

Per the specs, it has a QAM tuner built in. You would need to hook it up to the cable directly and scan for channels, if you need assistance with how to run a scan or with the set in general, check the LCD Flat Panel section for help.

I have a VX32L and am quite happy with it. With tht most basic Cox subscription and no cable box it gets all the available HD network channels available here in Gainesville.
However I have not spent many hours watching it that way since I mostly use a HTPC which also allows me to record.

I bought my Mom a VW37L and hooked it to the cable directly. Works fine. Gets digital channels fine. However, her cable company (small town in Minnesota) has no HDTV available. Really sucks.

Thanks,
read the manual... pages 25 and 36: http://www.vizio.com/media/products/pdfs/VX32L+HDTV10A+Manual(1).pdf
the cliff's notes:
1) connect the cable from the wall to the back of the HDTV
2) go to the menu, go to set up using the right arrow > button
3) Tuner Mode will be either cable or antenna. choose Cable
4) highlight auto search, press >
5) wait until it's done
6) look for the HDTV channels using the channel up or down buttons on the remote or TV

Thanks to all that replied. How will the pq of doing this compare to if I had a cable box with an HDMI cable? Is there anything I can to to get the best HD quality possible for a Vizio?
