this might/might not be the right place for this question but i've searched and can't find anything about it.

i currently have a receiver that is on my parent's account but i'm out of state and can't pick up locals (which i understand because they're spot beamed over the city where my parents are at). i am picking up all the new hd channels though.

my question is if i get the 5-lnb dish (i currently am using a oval 3-lnb dish) will i be able to pick up the locals in hd or am i going to be in the same boat because those will be spot beamed too.

Well, to be honest what you're doing violates the DirecTV customer agreement.

But besides that, getting a 5LNB dish will not make any difference, you'll still not be getting locals since HD's are also on spotbeams.

BTW:
DTV= Digital Television (as in over the air digital)
D*= Directv

Rad is correct, and if you're using a 3 LNB dish you're not getting all the new HD channels. Only a 5 LNB can pick them up.
