View Full Version : What happened to the HD HBO VOD on Comcast? It's back!
ghudson666 01-11-08, 12:21 AM Do you still have HD VOD [Video On Demand] shows for HBO with Comcast in your area? I just noticed that HBO is missing in the HD On Demand section. All the other premiums channels are there with their HD On Demand choices. Only HBO is missing.
There used to be two ways to navigate to VOD HBO HD...
HD On Demand > Premium Channels > HBO is missing
Premium Channels > HBO On Demand > HBO HD is missing
I am in the Richmond Virginia area.

It's gone in Seattle too. I think HBO is pulling the HD on Demand content. I found this article in May: http://www.tvpredictions.com/hbodemand051007.htm

Thanks for replying. Sad to know I am not alone.
It should be allowed on the HDMI boxes. Curse you HBO!
last time I dug around VOD I didn't find much.
Mostly PPV, encore and TCM oldie movies.
And a couple CSI's, a few Comedy Cent, some Cartoon net.
Of course, the usual educational/nature stuff that's kinda old.
That's not much exaggeration.
Seems to me the amount of VOD has gone down dramatically
in the mpls area. Not that I used any of it much.
HD VOD often means 4:3 letterbox(or "portraitbox") HD.
I guess with zooming I don't distort the picture.
As far as HBO, it's just easier to go through the guide once in a while.
HBO VOD is largely old movies I've already seen. And most are not in HD.
I really don't see the hype for VOD. I guess if you just put the kids to bed and don't care that much you'll find something.
Sparkman87 01-11-08, 09:59 AM Just checked our On Demand, HBO is there among the premium channels. Didn't check every category, but under Movies, 49 HBO movies were there.
gwandrick 01-11-08, 11:25 AM I am a Comcast HD & HBO subscriber in Atlanta.
I noticed that HBO is no longer listed under the HD on Demand, Premium Channels. I chatted with Comcast on 01/10/08 and the rep said:
"Sorry the listings for HBO HD has been removed by HBO."
I sent an email to HBO yesterday but have not heard back.
I'll have to check mine, that would suck. I wonder if they pulled from FioS VOD too.
Edit: Yep, gone here... grr.
I checked last night, HBO HD OnDemand still active for me. I tried a movie, it worked fine.
I remember that article on multichannel. What is funny is that since Comcast doesn't encrypt OnDemand here, I could just start up HBO OnDemand and record it on my PC using my OnAir GT TV Tuner that can record HD over clearQAM. Why that's even easier to get it on the internet, instead of analog component outputs, because there aren't any consumer solutions to record to the PC via a component input. So HBO wants to stop the harder way to get HD ondemand to the internet. Idiots. They are barking up the wrong tree. They need to yell at comcast to encrypt their HD ondemand AND encrypt component outputs. THEN it would be very hard.
ghudson666 01-11-08, 05:35 PM I emailed my local Comcast last night about the missing HBO HD VOD and below is their useless response...

Just so they can charge you for the visit! It sound like HBO HD ondemand has been pulled by HBO. The non-HD HBO ondemand still exists, but no more HD.
Pagoona 01-12-08, 08:43 AM This is not a Comcast problem. All of the HBO HD On Demand content simply ended on 01/01. I have Charter and it went away too. I have noticed that there is now Cinemax HD On Demand, which wasn't there before. Perhaps HBO/Cinemax only has the capacity of doing a certain number of HD On Demand shows at once?
londawg 01-13-08, 12:48 PM Pulled here too! As an effort to keep thier HD content competitive with the Satellite companies they did add FreeZone HD OnDemand, it features select programming from MOJO, Music Choice, Oxygen and Sundance channels. They currently only have 18 programs total from the choices above, Music Choice has like five music videos to choose from :/
I watched Alpha Dog on HBO HD OD, Wow that was a great movie! I was looking forward to more movie besides the Holiday fare they had. Something about sitting down and starting an HD movie when I wanted to was nice, although I have that option when I record on my DVR, But we have several HDTV's and we don't have DVR's on all of them.

-kickit- 01-13-08, 04:18 PM I don't have it anymore either. Sucks, won't be watching any HBO shows on demand anymore I guess. I don't see any valid reason for why HBO would do this. They are already getting battled by SHOTIME, and now they are just giving viewers another reason to choose SHOTIME over them.
Gone here now, last time I checked had to have been the last night it was there.
Man, this would be a killer for me if I was choosing a premium service to subsribe to, no HD on demand!
OggideM 01-14-08, 05:27 PM All aboard the corporate greedwagon.
It's been missing since the new year here in Portland as well.
Dino520 01-15-08, 01:36 AM Just got off the phone with Comcast..The CSR said it was HBO`s decision, and that they(HBO) were making technical improvements and would be back up...no timeline. I then asked for the supervisor. Ha(!)..he didn`t know why they pulled it or when it would be back. If I`d asked to speak with a 3rd Comcast rep, I probably would have gotten a third and different answer...
theguest 01-15-08, 04:09 AM Gone in Chicago as well. Is it possible they signed some exclusive deal with a satellite provider who's working on VOD?
EDIT: just saw the link above, more likely explanation
My CSR said there must be a problem at the headend and that they need to send a tech out to my house.
They are morons, don't even waste a day or your time with that
McDonoughDawg 01-15-08, 01:11 PM Well, HBO's actions on this cost them a subscriber. I chose to vote with my wallet. I enjoyed the few HD movies they offered on the On Demand System. Actually, I've been looking for a good reason since the Soprano's ended, and this was it.
looks like HBO HD on-demand is back

artseattle 07-20-09, 01:26 PM Can I really erase all of my HD-HBO content from my DVR? Will this stick around? I noticed that the first episode of "True Blood" is supposed to stay available until 10/12.

Marcus Carr 07-20-09, 05:50 PM Available on Comcast in Baltimore.
Too bad we can't get linear channels this fast.
rdclark 07-20-09, 07:59 PM And there it is in Delaware County PA (outside Philadelphia)! This is excellent.
sansri88 07-20-09, 08:07 PM HBO HD on Demand seems to have returned across Comcast's entire footprint. Hurrah for us!
Pris_matic 07-21-09, 12:44 PM It is back in MA too.. at first I was able to see in the HD On demand section but nothing worked if I click on any movie or shows.. Called the 888comcast and the guy did a reset of my cable box and it worked immediately...

yeah that would be sweet like HBO2 family comedy etc.
i think FIOS has that
Cal1981 07-21-09, 01:37 PM Comcast SF Bay Area. HBO HD On Demand also showed up yesterday with a very full range of programming. I had a strange situation when I tried it. Everytime I called up a program from HBO HD I got a CL-14 error. A Comcast rep had me call up a Showtime HD On Demand program and then go back and try HBO again and everything then came up normally. He thought that maybe one premium On Demand service somehow initialized the other one. An odd theory but it worked.
I immediately watched a teriffic show on the 1951 Dodgers-Giants pennant race and Bobby Thompson's "Shot Heard Arond the World" flag winning home run. Sweet!

irishprince317 07-22-09, 10:32 PM i seen it on cox san diego and Fairfax ,Va sites but not my area
Brian Conrad 07-23-09, 02:51 PM I'm wondering in this day in age of digital TV how much longer HBO will still use a logo intro symbolic of analog TV snow? :D
ghudson666 07-24-09, 06:29 PM I am glad that I am still subscribed to this thread or else I never would have known about this update. Thanks!
Comcast in the Richmond VA area now has HBO HD OnDemand shows. I just glanced at the list of HBO HD movies and the list has a lot of movies. About damn time that HBO brought back the HD programming back to Comcast OnDemand. Not that I take advantage of OnDemand programming but at least it is there if I ever want to use it.
I am glad that I am still subscribed to this thread or else I never would have known about this update. Thanks!
i was going to start a new thread but then i found this old one and after my post i guess a moderator changed the title to "it's back!" at the end :D

Comcast First to Launch HD Version of HBO's VOD Service
July 27, 2009
Comcast, the US's largest cable MSO, announced last week that it has become the first cable operator to offer an HDTV version of premium programming provider HBO's VOD service, HBO On Demand. HBO is the last US premium programming provider to offer such a service. "Comcast customers will be the first to enjoy the full HBO On Demand product in high definition, including HBO's original programming and movies," Derek Harrar, Comcast's SVP and general manager of video services, said in a prepared statement. "No one does HD like Comcast, with the best and the most HD entertainment on your terms."
According to Comcast and HBO, HBO On Demand HD currently features episodes of such original series as "True Blood," "Entourage," "The Sopranos" and "The Wire," as well as such movies as "The Dark Knight," "Mamma Mia!," "American Gangster," and "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix." Comcast claims that its VOD platform offers over 10,000 programs each month, including over 1,000 HD titles, and that it has generated over 12 billion views to date. According to the company, its launch of an HD version of HBO's VOD service is part of a Comcast VOD initiative, called Project Infinity, which was announced in January, 2008 and which aims to exponentially increase the amount of content the MSO offers on-demand (note: for more on Project Infinity, see the article published on itvt.com, January 15th, 2008).
Cal1981 07-27-09, 10:58 AM One odd thing happened this week. HBO HD disappeared from the On Demand HD Premium section. You now have to get to it from the normal Premium HBO menu item. Sheer genius:p
