mrvideo 05-03-11, 04:59 AM That shouldn't be necessary for Smallville,
To be 100% 1080p23.976, the Smallville effects would have to be redone, as they were only done originally in SD. But, as we've mentioned, the masters they've created for HDNet would be good enough, as long as they disclaim the effects are SD and they have no plans to ever go back and redo the effects for a 100% HD master.
To release the HDNet masters on BD and then ultimately go back and redo the effects would really bring about the complaints regarding double-dipping.
When I can, I've been capturing the HDNet airings. I don't have cable/DBS, so it takes a certain condition before I can capture them. I have all of the first season, and all but the last five of the 2nd season., The other seasons are what I need the most. I'd be happy to get what HDNet is airing on BD.
mrvideo 05-03-11, 05:02 AM 1. The CW just showed it a couple weeks ago at the regular Friday night time slot as a way to launch into the final few weeks of episodes.
BTW, what the CW aired was a highly edited version. The original is a little over 50 minutes. With the CW running about 42 minute shows, there must have been a lot missing from it.

Isn't The Big Blue out in Europe?
I also could swear I heard that Cameron was working on The Abyss, along with some of his other films. It might have been pertaining to a 3D conversion, but a BD release was mentioned or at least implied as being in the works, I thought.
Chad Varnadore 05-03-11, 02:52 PM To be 100% 1080p23.976, the Smallville effects would have to be redone, as they were only done originally in SD. I'd love to see Fox redo Firefly's effects in HD too, but I'm not holding my breath - not even sure it's worth crossing your fingers. I'm very content with the HD/upconverted composite BD they produced as is; the majority of the show is still true HD and its much more effects layden than Smallville. I imagine I'd be content with it too - whatever it takes to complete the series on BD. Assuming the new movie that was mentioned earlier is a continuation of the series, maybe Warner is waiting to see how it does, before deciding whether or not to invest in redoing the effects or not.

I live in the US so all my request have been specific to that region. I suppose I could use my HTPC and switch my player (have two) to that region code however. Thanks.
sivartk 05-04-11, 08:09 AM I'd just like to see "O' Brother Where Art Thou?" on Blu-ray.
Not that many viewers can capture HD, let along do anything with it permanently. Plus, OTA broadcasts suck because of bugs and those horrible snipes. Blu-ray with H.264 1080p23.976 is far superior to OTA low bitrate MPEG-2.
For similar reasons, all streaming sources (NF, Amazon, Vudu, etc) are utterly valueless to any HT-phile and/or film buff.
Valueless to the HT-phile because the codecs, bitrates, filtering, image cropping, ad content, bugs, snipes, etc are never known and/or can change from one day to the next. All streams will eventually add forced ads/bugs/snipes if they don't already. Also the inability to keep/record a stream you've paid for if you choose (at least easily).
Valueless to the film buff because titles can be removed from availability on a whim, edited/censored moving forward due to political correctness or editing for any reason, change the aspect ratio, etc.
The printed disc (DVD and/or BD, even LaserDisk) will *always* be the benchmark and Master of any film release (fan subbed/dubbed/edited darknet editions notwithstanding) for HT-philes and film buffs.

!?
I would rate the Abyss as one of the top SciFi films of all time, and a top film of any kind...
Robert Simandl 05-05-11, 01:44 PM Yet another title from my old LaserDisc collection I sold off and would like to replace (but won't any time soon because of the uniformly horrible reviews of the DVD):
THE HALLELUJAH TRAIL
It's apparently in massive need of a remaster.
Anyone know why The Core has been held up so long? It was a fun ride and blu ray treatment would be appreciated.
would love this on bluray too---one of my favorite films alongside wingcommander
The Abyss
True Lies

i fear the all-streaming model though
(as it is I already some people arguing for the case that DVD is a superior format to blu-ray and on IMDB and other bizarre things)

Those both need remasters. Actually I don't care for Never Say Never and I don't know how it got on my list. I confused it with a classic Disney (I think) cartoon (I think) with the phrase "never say never".
I'd also add:
Beyond Rangoon
Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion

Right, I had mistaken it for the 1993 version. I want "Blown Away" (1993).
SteveMo 05-09-11, 12:56 AM skibum5000, the titles you mentioned in my previous reply I have not seen. There are tons of movies I have not seen. For example, from 1988 - 1989 I watched no movies at all. From 1984 to mid 1985 I watched maybe four movies. In the early 80's I would only watch cartoons in the morning or what my parents were watching. Heck, around 1987 I got my first television that was 10" big, excluding the rear projection television downstairs we had since I was born. When you say tons more, there is literally tons I have not seen.

A-holes. And that is being polite about it.
Voice your complaints at: http://www.disneystudioshelp.com/Contact_Us.html
I did and got back the following response:
At this time, we do not have a Blu-ray release date for these titles.
The more people that complain about lack of product might get it through their thick skulls that there are more buyers than they think waiting for releases on Blu-ray.

Robert Simandl 05-11-11, 11:58 AM How about the uncut "Swamp Thing" movie with Louis Jordan and Adrienne Barbeau, two of the biggest talents anywhere... and Louis Jordan's not bad, either. :D
The current DVD of this movie is the edited PG theatrical cut, while unopened copies of the uncut version (out of print) are fetching over $65 on Amazon.
Hey Shout Factory, this one's calling your name!
WhereToStart 05-12-11, 10:46 PM I would really like both, or at least one of Prefontaine and Without Limits to be on Blu-Ray.
Robert Simandl 05-15-11, 10:20 AM Yet another "DVD is out of print, hard to find, and therefore expensive" request:
Mississippi Burning.
Let's have a BD of this title!
Edit: Just noticed this flick is still available as part of a Gene Hackman triple pack DVD set with The French Connection and Hoosiers at a somewhat reasonable price ($17.99 on Amazon). However, I already have French Connection on Blu, am not interested in Hoosiers, and half the reviews on Amazon say the 3-pack is packaged horribly resulting in damage during shipping.
Besides, I still want to see this flick in HD.
Htdude14 05-19-11, 08:10 AM The Blue Max

Aces High
I would like to see this series on Blu-Ray, so far to me this is some
of the best TV on right now!
Camelot is also very well done and bring on more Spartacus Blood and Sand to Blu-Ray.
It's sure to get a BD release. Too bad HBO takes their damn time releasing on home video. Does Boardwalk Empire even have a set release date yet?
I watched this film on DVD last night for the umpteenth time and find myself enjoying it more each time. It's nice to see an adventure yarn with minimal special effects, just straightforward action. I know that this title was released by Concorde in Germany in 2009 with forced German subtitles so it is way overdue in the USA.

Any chance HBO will put "The Wire" on blu ray?

Hoping that this flick will be available with a 7.1 DTS-HD-MA

Anybody know when this one will be released on BD?

Sinbad the Sailor (1947) with Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Maureen O'Hara.
The existing DVD on Amazon is a "region-free import" from some unknown country. In other words, it's a crappy bootleg.

First off, if it were region free, it wouldn't be playable anywhere. DVDs don't work that way. In order for a DVD to play in all of the 6 major regions, all have to be enabled on the DVD. No such thing as a region free player either. It is enabled for all regions. And yes, region 0 does not exist.
I also doubt that it is a bootleg. It is very possible that the copyright no longer exists and a very poor print was used to create the DVD. Who knows, a very good print might have been used for the DVD.
Robert Simandl 05-30-11, 08:44 PM Region-free, all-region, whatever. Jeez....
According to the customer reviews, a good print was most likely NOT used....

Robert Simandl 06-11-11, 11:15 PM Just got done watching Machete. Seeing Don Johnson in this flick reminds me of yet another item from the old LaserDisc collection:
Dead-Bang, starring Don Johnson and directed by John Frankenheimer.
The DVD is pan&scan only, apparently never remastered since its original DVD release in 2004. Widescreen copies of this flick do exist, including the Amazon on Demand version.
Maybe if they do a Gawdawful remake of this flick with Russell Brand, then they'll release the original on BD? Worked for Arthur earlier this year. :D

I've never seen it, but my curiosity was peaked years ago when I stumbled upon some article which did a feature on the film along the lines of, "great lost classic". And that interest has continued based upon all the ridiculously high praise it gets from those few who have seen it. People talk about it like it should be on the short list of "greatest films ever" or at minimum, the greatest dance film of all time.
This film has never even made it to dvd, let alone blu-ray. Only a badly cropped vhs version, apparently. Supposed to make The Red Shoes look dated by comparison.
Robert Simandl 06-25-11, 01:22 PM An American Werewolf in London is a great werewolf movie, and I'm glad to have it on BD. But The Howling is even better in my book. How come there's no Blu-ray of that one?????
Dan Hitchman 06-29-11, 03:06 PM Does anyone know if all the films in the 007 series were fully restored from the original elements or did this latest financial issue with MGM stop the project dead in its tracks?
If they were all completed by DTS/Lowry and all remixed by Mi Casa... when the frak will the rest of the films get released? Do you think the discs were already pressed and are just waiting for the green light?
Any clues??
I'm worred that if the restorations and remixes and various publicity materials weren't completed then whomever releases the last of the Blu-rays will do a slip-shod job. For the most part, the current Bond discs are pretty good with healthy bitrates and seemingly little filtering or EE (sans Never Say Never Again which was never given a very good transfer or restoration). Perhaps newer AVC encoding software could have improved the video masters a bit (as long as they weren't bitstarved), but for the most part...
Thanks!

The OG releases were remastered bar dad and twine, moonraker was the last title that lowrey did and will do from what was said at the time in the new masters they were not going later than moonraker
They'll be released around the time Bond 23 hits theatres in the fall of 2012. My guess is half the remaining titles will coincide with the film's theatrical release and the other half with its video release.

That doesn't bode well if those are from recent HD transfers. The financial situation at MGM must have kiboshed the efforts to fully restore and archive the original elements of all the classic Bond films. They were supposedly in pretty bad shape.

Yeah. That's one good thing about the never ending string of remakes in Hollywood. We often get a new blu of the original. While I like Colin Farell and love the premise, after watching the preview of the remake I have absolutely NO desire to see it. It just looks completely dull
Any idea if or when Fred Zinnemann's "The Day of the Jackal" might be remastered and released on Blu-ray. It is a classic that I've enjoyed very much over the years.

That's a favorite of mine, too. Last time I looked it wasn't even available on region 1 DVD; I had to import a PAL copy.
I don't know what holds this up: Michael Caine co-produced it and ought to have some motivation to keep it in print. In his autobiography he complains it is too talky, too British, should be more like an American thriller.
I have a brief review here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=19067814#post19067814).

The Fourth Protocol director John Mackenzie was under serious consideration to direct a Bond movie in the late 80s/early 90s. Had Brosnan not been tied to Remington Steele, Mackenzie could well have directed him as Bond.

But Poltrygeist did come out!!! I'd seriously wager that it's the best Troma movie!
I too am wondering about Surf Nazis and Mother's Day. Maybe they got delayed? I have yet to see these two.
Usually with Troma, you're not sure if you're getting something so stupid that it's boring an unwatchable, or something that actually has magic to it (i.e. Poltrygeist, Cannibal! The Musical, or Terror Firmer).
What we really should be getting, is Toxic Avenger first! You would think...

Another ditto here.
The Thing has been my favorite science fiction film since I was about 9 or ten. I'm now 62, and it's still my favorite.:)
Invasion is another favorite. I just got it on DVD as I was tired of waiting for it to appear on BD.
I also recently bought WOTW on DVD for the same reason.
I also like Shrinking Man, but it's lower on my list of favorites.
The fact that I just bought Invasion and WOTW on DVD, you can probably expect to see them announced for BD any day now. ;)
One of my "guilty pleasure" movies I'd love to see put on bluray is Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story. For some dumb reason they released it with only a DD 2.0 track. Not a DD 5.1 or a DTS 5.1 (as they did for the R2 Euro release DVD). I'll be happy with either a DTS HD 5.1 or Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track. 24-bit would be nice.

magnetite 09-13-11, 07:03 PM I sent in an e-mail to FoxConnect asking whether The X-Files wasn't on Blu-ray (or 24, Simpsons, or other popular series), and they said that The X-Files wasn't filmed in HD, so it wouldn't benefit from an Blu-ray release. Actually, it was shot on 35mm film, but edited on tape. Maybe what they meant was it wasn't mastered in HD. Only 480i tape.
Still, if 90% of the show was shot on film (excl. special effects), then 90% of the show is HD ready.
mrvideo 09-13-11, 07:10 PM The X-Files answer was lame. Fox has to decide if there will be any ROI if they go back to the original negative and rescan and re-edit all of the shows for Blu-ray.
It was done for The Twilight Zone and is now being done for Star Trek: The Next Generation, which has many more effects than X-Files.
magnetite 09-13-11, 09:03 PM Fox sounds cheap. Maybe they should outsource it to another company to do it? Honestly, the DVDs look quite old. If that is their answer though, remastering the DVDs would probably be easier since they wouldn't need to make new effects or anything. They could use a touch up.
Past couple weeks I've been considering finding replacements for the show, not because of the content, but rather the picture quality of the DVDs. Some of them have chroma noise and shimmering, which from what I've been told is due to the episodes being captured from a composite video cable.
Edit: You know, the guy who probably has the say on whether this is coming to Blu-ray or not would probably be Chris Carter. After all, he created The X-Files.
kucharsk 09-17-11, 04:40 AM Still waiting for The Best Years of our Lives (1946.)

I'm also still hoping Warner Brothers does an "On Demand" disc production program for BD; that may be the only way I'll ever get Local Hero on BD (it was on HDNet Movies, but the audio mix was severely messed up…)
I'm sure at least part of the problem is it's an MGM title. :(

Anyhoo, other movies have their own threads so here's LoA's.
First question... when the heck is this coming out? Any rumors?

I guess so. I mean just because a show isn't as popular as Star Trek doesn't mean it doesn't deserve the HD treatment. Even shows like 24 were dubbed "best show on prime time" back in it's day.
Still, even for 24, they would have to go back and re-do seasons 1-6 for HD. You'd think this would happen in at least 20 years, because when people then compare something like Ultra HD to standard def, they would probably think that it would probably be worth a remaster.
I'm not sure if I'm right on this, but with new formats coming out (eg. 4K), wouldn't it get cheaper to remaster lower resolution film?
As for Fox, I don't remember seeing anything official about whether they are or aren't doing any remasters.

Whoever is controlling MGM stuff... GoldenEye...do it! Hackers? Wtf? This NEEDS to be out on BD.
dvdmike007 11-21-11, 09:22 AM Anyone catch Bill and Ted's Excellent adventure on ITV HD on Saturday? I was stunned at how great it looked, this is a new transfer! Must have been prepped for disc.
Anyone know if Robert Redford has this one on the table to release on Blu Ray? I have the original, non anamorphic DVD (yikes!). I can only imagine and hope that he releases this soon. Great movie, scenery and musical score.
Jeff
Here we are 1 1/2 years later and not even a rumor on when this may be released on Blu-ray. My wife tried watching the non-anamorphic DVD last night and gave up.

After doing a search of this thread I couldn't believe no one has asked for the release of The Dead Zone (1983) movie. I believe the last attempt by Paramount was a 2006 DVD (Special Collector's Edition) that featured more extras. Yes please, I want The Dead Zone on Blu-ray!

Would KILL to have an uncompressed sountrack on Blu.
Such a great, great flick.
I promise, Fox, if you release this I'll buy multiple copies and give them to friends and family.

Babaganoosh 12-21-11, 10:22 PM Any idea if we will ever see the Qatsi trilogy released on Blu ray? I know these are not mainstream movies, but I would love to have them on Blu ray.
Amazon.de has the first two Qatsi films on Blu-Ray for preorder (set to come out next month). I don't know if either of the following points are true:
1) if one could buy these Blu-Rays from that site and play them on an American player (I'm not familiar with region coding as it applies to Blu-Ray, if indeed it does apply)
2) whether this bodes well for an American release of the same BRs (why would they release them in Germany and not in the US? )
Jmouse007 12-22-11, 01:20 PM "The Inner Circle" 1991 () Tom Hulce (Actor), Lolita Davidovich (Actor), Bob Hoskins (Actor), Andrey Konchalovskiy (Director)
This was the first Western financed film to be actually filmed in the Kremlin in Russia after Glastnost. It is the true story of Alexander Ganshin (Ivan Sanchin in the film), the NKVD (KGB) officer who was Stalin's private film projectionist from 1939 until the dictator's death in 1953.
An exceptional non-fiction film depicting an intimate inside look into the impact of Stalinist communism; the "workers paradise", on every area of an individual life as seen within "The Inner Circle".
Exceptional acting, subtley portraying the fear and terror of being alive in the time and society when it was dangerous to be not dead.
Please release this treasure on DVD or better yet on Blu-Ray. While this is not your typical "feel good" Hollywood fare, it provides a tremendous, accurate historical archive for what life was like in Stalinist Russia; the land where Stalin killed 23 million of his own people in order to establish and maintain power.

Any fans of the old tv series "COMBAT!" (1962-1967)?
Image Entertainment has already released it on DVD.
But there website makes no mention of them re-releasing it on blu-ray.
Does anybody know if "Combat!" will be coming to blu-ray anytime soon?
They don't have the original negatives any more, at least not for the black and white seasons. The DVDs were made from the syndicated videotapes and even they have visible drop outs.

Somewhere in Time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somewhere_in_Time_%28film%29) (1980) - The film has a huge cult following including my wife and daughters. Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour in a time travel love story. Presently only available in the U.S. in a badly done non-anamorphic DVD.

Warner Bros. decided it was better to give us the de-Islamed, Euro-version of "Executive Decision", so it wouldn't surprise me if Paramount chickens out due to political correctness...
For all we know Matt and Trey want to due do some extra commentary or be involved with the transfer or maybe they want to alter the effects to further mock George Lucas. You never know with those guys. Maybe no one wants to front the cash for a new master, there are lots of other possible reasons.

The 1080 broadcast version floating around from "other sources" is not too bad and will have to do until the studios decide to release this gem.
I suspect it's more than PC that is holding up the Bluray release as the movie does have a sharp dig at actors, which they probably aren't too happy about.

I had a trailer for TA-WP on a HD DVD once but never saw the actual release.
Since Paramount supported both formats for most of the format war, that Team America clip was included in the promo ad at the beginning of most early Paramount Blu-rays too. Unfortunately, the movie never materialized on either format.
For whatever it's worth, VUDU has the movie available for streaming in 1080p. I have not watched it to check the quality, however.
It's also available on Canadian Netflix.

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story. Jason Scott Lee & Lauren Holly.
Yes I'm a Bruce Lee fan. But as much as liberties were taken, as in any "life story", I still enjoyed the movie a lot. Jason, I thought did a great job for some one who wasn't a martial artist. Of all the Bruce Lee impersonators I think he's the best. The others I believe DID have some kind of martial arts background.
Why Warner decided to only put out a DD 2.1 DVD I have no idea. In the age when DD and DTS 5.1 DVD's were common. So, it's about time a DTS HD 5.1 or Dolby TrueHD 5.1 BD is put out. LET'S GO WARNER!!!

Yes I'm a Bruce Lee fan. But as much as liberties were taken, as in any "life story", I still enjoyed the movie a lot. I was surprised Warner only put out a DD 2.1 DVD (R1...R2 has a DTS 5.1 version) and not at least a DD 5.1. Better would have been a DTS 5.1 DVD. So, if Warner could get with it and put out a DTS HD 5.1 (or Dolby TrueHD 5.1) I'd be happy...
And, Jason I though did a great job for some one who didn't have a martial arts background. Fooled me. He was a gymnast. And a decent actor. Bettering all impersonators I've seen to date. Most end up hamming it up (and most others I believe DID have some kind of martial arts background).
It's about time!!

Dex Robinson 02-18-12, 10:21 PM A number of wonderful, old Paramount VistaVision films have come to Blu-ray. Paramount themselves released the brilliant WHITE CHRISTMAS from 1954. Olive films just released ROCK-A-BYE BABY and THE GEISHA BOY from 1958.
How does 1955's STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND keep slipping through the cracks?
I don't think it's even had a legit DVD release in Region 1. Jimmy Stewart, June Allyson, Harry Morgan and directed by Anthony Mann.
Paramount, more than most studios, has been quite willing to license out titles for Blu-ray. My airplane buddies have been asking about STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND for years. If Paramount won't do it, this would be an obvious title for Olive Films.

I'm sure it has already been mentioned but why no Abyss on Blu? Has James Cameron ever mentioned this before?
Yep, over a dozen times but thanks for keeping the dream alive. :)
Last year the rumors had it coming out in 2012, now the rumors push it back to next year.
And in other news, this would normally go in The Rumor Mill, but it's easier to just post it here: We've been checking with our industry sources and have confirmed that 20th Century Fox is definitely planning to bring director James Cameron's The Abyss and True Lies to Blu-ray at long last. Sources tell us that the hope is to do a big promotion with the titles sometime next year. Why the wait? Cameron is a pretty busy guy these days, so these things take time. (Hey, when was the last time you tried diving to the deepest point in the ocean?) Nevertheless, rest assured that the two long-awaited films are definitely coming to Blu in the not-too-distant future.

I just pre-ordered the 2D version from Amazon for $22, shipping on Sept 14th. I just bought a new projector (2D) and don't plan to upgrade anytime soon, so the 3D at $28 would have been overkill.
I noticed that the 1925 silent version of Phantom of the Opera (featuring Lon Chaney, Sr.) was released a few months ago on Blu by Image Entertainment, and look forward to checking that out. (Official AVS Review in case anyone interested may have missed it back in Nov.)
I'd also love to see the TCM reconstruction of Chaney's London After Midnight released on Blu.
+1 on The Abyss, and also a higher quality xfer of T2.
I haven't been too impressed with the xfer quality on Cameron's older films so far (e.g. T2, Aliens), so hopefully he can up his game on future releases. If it takes a bit longer to get them done right, so be it.
They are old, but movies I love and deserve a good BD offering:

Here's a complete list of the Midnite Movies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midnite_Movies#All_released_titles_in_alphabetical_order) released on DVD and VHS. Are any of these available yet on Blu, or possibly in the works?
If the HD transfers were halfway decent, I'd probably pick up alot of these on BD beginning with the Corman/Poe pictures, the AI/Amicus Burroughs pics, and Hammer films. Don't recall seeing any of these in the BD sections at the usually places though.
Dex Robinson 05-12-12, 03:26 PM Are any of these available yet on Blu, or possibly in the works?
I believe ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU is in the works but the only one that I can tell you for sure that's available right now is WITCHFINDER GENERAL with Vincent Price.
WITCHFINDER GENERAL is a UK import...I got it from amazon.uk about 10 days ago. The feature itself plays fine in North America as do the HD special features. Be aware, however, that the SD extras are in PAL and won't play here.
The Midnite Movies were a pretty impressive series and I'd love to see a whole lot more of them (I've got about 80% of that list on DVD).
Merci for the reply Dex. And needless to say I agree 100% with your last comment. I also own quite a few of these on DVD, and certainly wouldn't mind addin a few HD editions as well. So a heads-up on any other future releases would be most welcome (from anyone).
