Does anyone know if the the BBC or similar plan to put out any Blu Ray stuff.
Im looking for any of the BBC at the Proms Hi Def broadcasts from Norah Jones..Paul Weller...Amy Winehouse...Corrine Bailey Rae.
Or maybe tv shows like ROBIN HOOD...BLEAK HOUSE...HOTEL BABYLON..

Spooks and Life on Mars were not made in HD.

Torchwood would be great though. One of the cleanest HD pictures i've seen and the BBC HD feed is on a par with the majority of disc releases we've had.

I believe the BBC's Planet Earth is already available for pre-order. Since Warner Home Video releases BBC programming in the US it is available for both formats.

You mean other than documentaries?

It's a bit early, don't forget that very few shows are shot in HD and none are shot on film.

In terms of films we've had Layer Cake and James Bond. We're also due Sense and Sensibility, Lawrence of Arabia and Battle of Britain. Of course, how "British" they are is up for debate.

Its a Fox/MGM title and all Fox titles are in limbo currently. We've been told for like several weeks now that Fox will announce something soon.

Last Of The Mohicans is near the top of my wish list too, but only if it's the original theatrical release, not the watered down director's cut.

Thankfully I have a bootlegged Laserdisc copy of the theatrical. The only thing superior in the DC is Chingachgook's closing monologue.

Considering FOX has only released the DC for years now, since the first DC on LD, I wouldn't count on it.

Now the good news is that Warner has the internationa rights to this and on DVD they've only released the TC, and with an isolated music score track in 5.1 (I have it right here :D). Awesome movie

"Watered down" and "Director's Cut" are two phrases that I would never expect to see in the same sentence in regards to a film. I guess I've only ever seen the DC, since I distinctly remember the monologue at the end.

What was changed from the theatrical release?

Sorry to bump an "old" topic.

I'll fully agree with the OP. I loved the theatrical version and was thrilled when the director's cut came out... until I watched it. Hawkeye loses so much of his intensity in the DC. I also dislike Chingachgook's monologue at the end, it's too preachy. I preferred the shorter monologue in the theatrical cut.

To be honest, it's been 10+ years since I saw the theatrical cut so I can't recall the exact changes. The run time on the theatrical cut is 112 whereas the DC is 117.

The laser disc contains the original theatrical version of the film...only reason I kept the LD. I absolutely HATE the DC version of this film which is the only version you can get on DVD. Another film that comes to mind where you can only get the DC version of the film on DVD is Bladerunner. And ...YES...I am looking forward to the HD release of this great film.

The laserdisc copy is the Theatrical Release. The DVD is the DC.

The IMDB has a pretty good rundown of the differences:

- A new shot of Chingachgook running in the deer chase.

- A new shot of Hawkeye walking towards Cameron's Cabin.

- A new shot of Magua shooting a British soldier point blank with musket.

- Some new shots of the Siege on Fort William Henry.

-A new sequence, which was shown on the CBS version in 1996, shows the previously talked about but never shown, Major Heyward's diversion. It shows the British Army in perfect formation shooting French soldiers and Huron Indians.

-A longer version of the Britsh surrender is shown. Colonel Monroe and General Montcalm discuss political matters.

- Newer shots of the British Army leaving the Fort are shown.

-A new but very brief shot of the French cheering their victory while entering the Fort.

-Some new shots of the Huron approaching the British through the trees.

-Some violent shots of soldiers being hacked to death by tomahawks are shown.

-Some new footage of the group rowing from the Huron are shown.

-After Hawkeye and the others have fled, there are two new but brief shots of the Huron approaching Cora and Alice.

-The whole "I will find you" sequence has been changed. The original had footage of Cora, Alice and Major Heyward being taken up a mountain. This sequence was accompanied by the song, "I will find you" by the Irish group, Clannad. In this version, the song is gone and the sequence is about thirty seconds longer. It has different shots of Hawkeye, his brother and Chingachgook running up the mountain and following the Huron War party. Their are also beautiful shots of the group being led into the sunset.

-A brief shot of Hawkeye spying on the Huron village.

-A quick shot of Major Heyward burning alive has been added but his screaming has been deleted in the rest of the shots.

-New shots of Uncas fighting the Huron and Magua have been added.

-When Magua slits Uncas' throat, a new sound was digitally added.

-When Chingachgook rolls under Magua, a new sound of the tomahawk swinging is heard.

-When Chingachgook kills Magua, the pike from the battle axe is no longer shown impaling Magua.

-The scene where Hawkeye goes to comfort Cora has been deleted.

-There is a much longer version of the Uncas funeral scene. Chingachgook talks about the Frontier life and how it is changing.

-Hawkeye's statement to Major Heyward in the Fort, "Someday you and I are going to have a serious disagreement," has been removed.

-At night in the burial ground, Hawkeye's line about his father saying "Do not try to understand them, and do not make them try to understand you, for they are a breed apart and make no sense," and Cora's response later have been deleted.

-When escaping in the canoes Hawkeye's line "Isn't there anything better to do on the lake today, Major?" has been deleted.

-Cora's line behind the waterfall, "If the worse should happen, if only one of us survives, something of the other does too," and the first part of Hawkeye's following speech have been deleted.

-After telling Major Heyward that he ain't no scout, and ain't in no damn militia, Hawkeye's line "Clear it up any?" has been deleted.

The worst changes for me are the conversation between Hawkeye & Cora in the burial ground, the "serious disagreement" and "clear it up any" lines being deleted, and the editing of Chingachgook's defeat of Magua (it also removed a shot of Chingachgook's weapon breaking Magua's shoulder.)

My GF loves LOTM and she bought the directors cut DVD not knowing any better, watched it and was seriously pissed off. She mostly complained about a scene where the music had changed, not sure what part that was. Must be that "I'll find you sequence" refrenced above. Man was she mad. I would love to be able to get the theatrical on BD.!!

Yep - I remember the long search years ago for a different region, but with no luck. Long strings on amazon about this as well. Your GF is not alone.

I thought it one of the best concerts I have seen in decades. Eddie and David Lee Roth looked so fit / ripped and played just like I recall them back in the late '70s as a kid at the Diver Down tour. They were not sagging old farts by any means. But man was it loud. I wore ear protection. I would guess they were 125 dbs and up all night long.

What happened to Michael Anthony?

A little off topic here but -
Van Halen recently had a huge technical issue on stage in a concert somewhere out east. During "Jump", the keyboards - which were sampled - played back at the wrong sampling rate, causing them to be WAY off key.

I feel bad for bands when that kind of stuff happens of stage, but hey finished the song though!

I love VH.

More to it than that. Mike has burned a few bridges and it looks good on him that he is out, plus I have seen this tour 3 times so far, and Wolfgang has done more bass playing in 3 shows then Mike has done in 20 years.

I'll be at the new Sprint Center in KC for their show Friday night. This will be my first mega concert, (despite the fact that I am 27) so I am incredibly hyped. I noticed they have closed VIP sales for the KC show, and also have postponed the Saint Louis show the Sunday night after, so part of me wants to construe that as a possibility that they might film the KC show. Keep in mind that this is just me in fantasy land (they closed VIP sales for the Minneapolis show this wek as well), but it would be awesome. All my friends think it is nuts to pay $99 for a concert ticket (just think if I had plunked down the $200 for a really good ticket), but I keep trying to explain to them the implosion factor and how there's no guarantee they will last past the tour.

Glad to hear the glowing reviews - I've been watching the videos people have been sending in to Van Halen News Desk, and I have been impressed so far.

Having spent a little time on the road on this tour I can only say that the shows keep getting better as time has gone on. They're really beginning to hit the mark and fire on all cylindars.

As to the original question posed only time will tell if anything gets released. With the tour and things going seemingly well I would think it's a distinct possability that a DVD will surface in some way shape or form.

Personally I'm hoping they open up the vaults and officially release the Largo '82 concert or the Oakland '81 show. At the very least the US Festival would be nice.

I think you were not paying close attention. The clips of Aladdin, Tarzan, and The Lion King were part of their "Coming Soon to a Theater Near You" preview for Enchanted, which hits theaters next month. They were NOT part of the Disney on BluRay preview, which is the same one we've had on all other Disney/BV BluRay releases.

Disney "vaulted" The Lion King in 2003 and Alladin in 2004 with the releases of their Platinum Edition DVD's. If they hold true to their timing of 7 years in the vault, those movies will not be available again on any medium until 2010 and 2011. The Upcoming Sleeping Beauty on BluRay is also a Platinum Edition, though I am wondering why the Spring release of the 101 Dalmations Platinum Edition does not include a BluRay alternative.

There's also a few clips within the trailer for Disney's Enchanted http://www.apple.com/trailers/disney/enchanted/hd/

It's interesting to know that films including Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame went through the CAPS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_Animation_Production_System) which produced 2k at 1.66:1 aspect ratio (2048 X 1232).

I'm sorry I did not make it clear. The clips were part of the the Enchanted preview, which was in high-def. You can view the trailer here at apple.com (http://www.apple.com/trailers/disney/enchanted/large.html)

For those who can't view it or would like a synopsis:
Flash of new Disney CGI logo
Caption: "Of all the classic Disney stories..."
Video of Lion King scene holding announcing Simba's birth.
Caption: "Of all the miraculous adventures..."
Video of Buz and Woody flying from Toy Story and then Tarzan swinging on vine, landing, and looking over his shoulder.
Caption: "Of all the magical tales..."
Flash of video of Genie coming out of the lamp in Aladdin, Closeup of Belle from Beauty and the Beast, Sorcerer's Apprentice Mickey on the Mountain from Fantasia, the breaking of the curse from Beauty and the Beast.
Caption: "There has never been anything..."
Caption: "Like Enchanted"
Video of animated portions of new movie Enchanted: Cottage in the forest surrounded by birds, prince on a horse laughing, a princess in a gown with birds putting a tiara on her head, etc. until Malificent throws the princess into a fountain and she travels through some weird portal and comes out of the sewer as a flesh and blood live action character.

So, again, this is the HD version of the Enchanted trailer, not a "coming soon' announcement for any of the titles they provide clips for. Go view the trailer for yourself again and see. It's in 1080p on the site.

they need to get on Pinnochio, STAT!So many Disney movies have scenes that frightened me when I was a small child. Monstro the whale being one of them. Needless to say, I've seen them more recently and they are all great stories. They should hurry up and ship the classics out on the Blu-train.

I have a hard time believing you'll see any of Disney's top-tier animated films on HDM before 2009.

(stares at that little morsal comparison)

-DROOL-

I ain't too proud to say it. I'm 30 and the Lion King is one of my favorite films ever made.

The opening sequence was BORN for HD! So many hues and colors, sounds, thumps... it's like an HD reel tailor made!

Well, I consider "Sleeping Beauty" in the top tier. It is a mesmerizing animated film. It is currently slated for fall 2008 I believe.

I'm trying to picture how these would look better in HD. Certainly not like a Tim Burton movie since its a good old fashioned cartoon?

I kinda thought the same thing about animation, but have you seen the trailer for The Simpsons movie (it's on the Playstation Network if you haven't and you have a PS3)in high-def? It's AMAZING. Like you could dip your finger in the picture and it'd come out yellow. It's like the highest quality, cleanest paint job you'll ever see on a car, very deep.

they need to get on Pinnochio, STAT!

I was searching " Aladdin Blu Ray " on Google, and came across this article from dvdtown.com . Mind you that I did not read the entire article, but they said at one part of this event they showed a list of forthcoming Disney Movies on BR? or BD?. Here are some of them:

1. Aladdin [abc HD, missed it :( ]; The Lion King [abc HD, missed it :( ]
2. Toy Story 2, but no Toy Story 1 [abc HD, missed it :( ], listed?

4. Monsters Inc.

5. Dumbo/Peter Pan/Pinnochio; Lilo & Stitch; Pocohontas; and The Little
Mermaid.

I didn't see (3.) Finding Nemo or Fantasia listed on there. But as some of us now, they were pictured (along w/ MI I believe), in a Sony BR ad. Thanks for listening to my ramblings.

http://www.dvdtown.com/news/the-latest-on-blu-ray/4880

Thanks for your input SirDrexl & sunstar 715. It always helps if you read the whole article (shame on me). Will definitely be doing that.

MISSED "A Bug's Life" HD (abc).

Sleeping Beauty will be the first animated classic next fall. I would expect that to be the start of them releasing Platinum titles day and date with the DVD counterparts, so we would get two per year from then on. I will be pleasantly surprised if they release them faster than that. Pinnochio should be slated for 2009, but we'll see.

I'm only referring to Platinum titles, so we could get titles like Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, etc., at any time after SB (but probably no more than a few each year). I would expect no more than one or two Pixar catalog titles each year, and you just know they'll hold Toy Story 1 and 2 for the release of Toy Story 3.

I'd love for them to open the vaults and get these out sooner, but I'm trying to keep my expectations in check because I've seen how these things take time.

from the article it says they plan on release 3-4 platinum titles every spring and fall after sb releases next october

Blu soon?
It wasn't all technology talk, though. At a mill-and-mingle breakfast, Dan Bradley of TheManRoom.com and I sat down with Disney exec Ho and talked new releases. "Sleeping Beauty" had been previously announced as the first classic animated title to be released in Blu-ray, and Ho said that after that October '08 release, Disney would be releasing three to four "Platinum" titles every spring and fall. With noticeable passion he talked about how breathless all the studio brass were when they got their first glimpse of "Sleeping Beauty" on Blu-ray. Ho didn't say so, and there's obviously no timetable, but a big screen demonstration we watched at the "Ratatouille" release party the following evening listed these Disney titles as forthcoming in Blu-ray:

"Aladdin"
"The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe"
"Cinderella"
"Dumbo"
"Freaky Friday"
"Lilo & Stitch"
"The Lion King"
"The Little Mermaid"
"The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh"
"Monster's Inc."
"National Treasure"
"101 Dalmatians"
"The Parent Trap"
"Peter Pan"
"Pinocchio"
"Pocahontas"
"The Princess Diaries"
"The Rookie"
"The Santa Clause"
"The Santa Clause 2"
"The Shaggy Dog"
"Tarzan"
"Toy Story 2"

My wife loves The Princess Bride and I know back in Feb it was supposed to be released on blu-ray but got postponed and is still not yet released in the USA. I was wondering if this movie was available from another counrty that region coding still works in a USA PS3. I know other movies such as The Island are available from France or UK and still work in a USA PS3. I would love to get this movie for my wife for x-mas if available at all.

This and Labyrinth are two of my most wanted "80s" movies on BD. Hopefully the wait will be worth it with respectable PQ/AQ. As many times as this title's been re-issued on standard DVD I'm really hoping they don't drop the ball to encourage many future double/trip/quadruple dips.

Now I want, in no particular order:

We need studio from Korea to start releasing in Blu-Ray. (Samsung is a Korean company that is heavily Blu-Ray supporter) Come on Korea!

OldBoy is owned by Tartan...that's why we see it in Blu-Ray in US.

We have Hong Kong and Japan releasing movies in Blu-Ray. We are still waiting for Korea!

I'll be in heaven if I see them in Blu-Ray - one major reason why I picked Blu-Ray...majority of the asian movies going with Blu-Ray

A Moment To Remember
Windstruck

200 Pounds Beauty

too many to list...

I found the trailer for it on youtube, but I can't tell what its about, or even less, if its any good: link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oggHzym79w)

Yes, I have seen it. Have you seen the US remake of Il Mare called "Lake House" with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock? The movie is about two people living in different timezone but they cross communication with each other through the mailbox. I don't want to give too much of the plot, but if you like love story with suspense, then you'll like this one. I have too many recommendation, and this is one of them. There are a lot of bad movies out there, but this is not one of them. Let me know what type of movies you like, then I can make my recommendation. I do wish Il Mare is coming to Blu-Ray in the near future.

I enjoyed Il Mare. Yes, she's the same actress in My Sassy Girl. It might be a little bit on the slow side, but the story was still entertaining. If you like My Sassy Girl, then I highly recommend Windstruck with her in it as well. Also, you should check out Daisy with the same actress.

Il Mare is so much better than Lake House....as you know most remake are not up to par with the original...such like Infernal Affairs. The remake The Departed is not as good as the Infernal Affairs.

Here's a site that includes picture of the 2 different edition of the DVD set: The 3 disc set is the new version release as seen on the right side of the site link below which includes postcards. The first release is only a 2 disc set. You can still get the 3 disc set in yesasia I believe for under $20 as I remembered.

I am an avid LSU Football Fan and thoroughly enjoyed watching my Tigers win the National Championship in person. All of the BCS games were televised in high definition. All of the games are going to be available for purchase on DVD. I am hoping that the games will also be released in high definition. FOX and ABC (Disney) broadcast the games and therefore I am assuming that the format would be Blu-ray.

Does anyone have any suggestions on pressuring the studios to sell the game in high definition? Many of us bought high definition televisions with watching sports as a major consideration.

Thanks.

Gerontosaurus Rex is Complaining….

Since this so-called 'format war' is rightly coming to an end (hopefully) and will take with it to its grave all intellect-free fainboy-posts, I dare trying to shift the focus of the AVS High-Def Blu-Ray Software forum to older movies.

Before I plunged into the format war I considered myself younger than I feel today (after reading what so many forum members called their favourite movies). I have no intention whatsoever of judging anyone, but I have to say that the films I long to see on High-Def are quite different.

Without the naive assumption that anyone cares, I still want to stress how much I long to see certain movies being released on Blu-Ray. Please, have patience and bear with me. Here it comes (you might never even heard of those titles):

SLEUTH
No – not with Jude Law, but very much with Sir Maurice Micklewhite and the one and only Lord Olivier of Brighton (I adore). It is the year 1972, the magnificent and unique (and equally adorable) Joseph L Mankiewicz has made his last moving picture as a director, telling 'Lord Larry' and Michael Caine how to act (as if that would have been necessary). The result of such a most impressive collaboration is a film with performances some people today might consider old-fashioned or even out-dated. But I couldn't care less. It is as old-fashioned as myself, who refuses to leave the house without a necktie and a jacket and who would be shaken to the core if he had to visit a restaurant where they dare to confront me with a paper napkins or tea bags.
First released 1998 by Anchor Bay on one of the worst DVDs ever, you had to flip the disc after 'Inspector Doppler' appeared on screen, you had to suffer through a 1,66: 1 non-anamorphic framing, and the wonderful soundtrack by John Addison was faulty. The edition was replaced 2002 with a slightly better one, but still without the tender loving care this title deserved. Anchor Bay – please, please, please do me the favour or granting Sleuth the High-Def treatment it genuinely deserves. And put on the Blu-Ray everything you can find about this brilliant movie.
(A little hint: Why do I call myself 'Merridew'? Watch this movie and you will know).

THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT
Even rarer. Could you believe it – there is not a single High-Def disc out there with Katherine Hepburn on it! Feel ashamed, Blu-Ray producers, feel ashamed!
Imagine this: Part of the story, far from being realistic in any way, is the wonderful Danny Kaye, who spoils us with one of his greatest performances ever: the ragpicker who has to play an attorney and who gives the speech of his lifetime (in the cellar of Countess Aurelia), while Yul Brynner, Paul Henreid and Oscar Homolka want to dig for oil – in Paris!
It starts with this written introduction:
'This is a story of the triumph of good over evil – obviously it is a fantasy'.
This gem of a movie was never released on DVD (!). The Laserdisc I have is from Warner, so, please, please, please Warner – let us rejoice in watching a Blu-Ray with a film everyone should know (and most critics hate).

I could go on and on. But don't be afraid – I won't. I just wanted to mention two examples of movies I not only love but which introduced me into the realm of film as an art form.

Movie studios - let us few, us happy few, feel blessed by the presence of Blu-Rays with old movies we love.

And he which hath no stomach to these films, let him depart.
His passport shall be made, and discs of Transformers and Spiderman 3 put into his purse.
We would not watch movies in that man's company that fears his fellowship to watch with us … He that outlives this day, and comes save home, will stand a tip-toe when those Blu-Rays are released!

(Terribly sorry for the last paragraph – couldn't resist!)

I just finished a passionate discussion about movies and High Def with a couple of people and wanted to know whether anyone esle out there share my thoughts. I am new to forums. Anyone has any news if King of Queens will be coming to Blu-Ray? Are we destined to the DVDs?

I'd love to see some of the earlier seasons on BD. But if it wasn't shot on film then it won't really matter if it does come out on BD or not.

My short-term list:

Predator
Pulp Fiction
Lord of the Rings trilogy
Matrix trilogy

And please don't make me accept a BD-25 MPEG-2 version of Predator with DD 640kbps audio. This movie is screaming for the works.

Will "In the Name of the King" come to Blu-Ray?
I saw it this weekend and actually liked it. But if I came away with anything it's that the picture wasn't as sharp or crisp as say the Lord of the Rings or Eragon. The effects were good, the story not bad, it wasn't great but it might be the director’s best movie yet, which says a lot considering the harsh criticisms he gets for his movies.

I mean Blood Rayne 2 was especially bad.

This movie is a classic fantasy movie to me. I waited and searched for years to find it on DVD. It was one of my favorites as a kid in the early 80s and it still rocks to this day. It definitely is not a cheesy 80s fantasy movie when compared to current fantasy movies in my opinion.

the movie is okay....

I still can't get over the fact that Stallone started his movie career
in a hard core porn film.

Also.... I just hope there's no Rambo 5... what are they gonna do,
drag him from the senior retirement home? :D :D :D

I know it is a little early for this but does anyone knows if this is going to be 7.1 it is a lionsgate so I am hoping this will be in 7.1 uncompressed. This should be great in 7.1 audio track, can you imagine being in the forest, this should be another apocalypto soundwise?

nothing annouced, so the info is not available at this time. It's unusal for specs to be released on a title that has just hit the theaters.

Based on what liongate does these days you can expect avc and 7.1 lossless.
