View Full Version : Want to split signal from my PS3, will this work?
gopher2k 01-12-08, 11:00 PM I want to output an HDMI signal from my ps3 to two TVs in two rooms which share a common wall. Will something like this work? http://images.monoprice.com/productlargeimages/25221.jpg
I understand it should be all i need in theory, but I am wondering if I will run into HDCP issues or anything with this. Anyone doing this now? I'd rather a cheap solution to a formal router if possible.
Thanks in advance!
decapad 01-13-08, 06:54 AM Hey Gopher - I just got one of those with my cable order from monoprice - I really don't know what this does - as it did NOT work with anything I wanted it to do. So - we have to get the powered splitters - I saw Firefold has it for $55.99 - this link: http://www.firefold.com/Products/1X2-HDMI-Splitter__HDMI-2SPLITTER.aspx If anyone has actually used this we'd love to hear from you - or if you've found a low cost splitter that works perfectly. For some reason - this is the kinda device I HATE to spend 1 cent more on than you absolutely have to! Thanks, D
I was looking at this device simply to split hdmi 720p signal from my pc to monitor, and projector. I figured this cheap thing would work for a pc at this resolution, not actual consumer electronics, but now Im unsure if it will work at all.
That will not work at all.
The purpose of that product is for two sources to one display, and only one source can be turned on at a time.
stupidsuck 01-16-08, 04:28 PM I bought that same splitter because I have 2 HDTVs in my living room and wanted to split the HD signal from my cablebox to the 2 TVs (so If I'm gaming on one TV I can still get the HD signal on the other TV)
Anyways it did not work, does anyone know if there is a way to split my cablebox's HD source to 2 TVs?

Yes, a 1x2 distribution amp.

thanks, so this is what I should be looking at?
should I expect any PQ loss with this?

decapad 01-18-08, 06:55 AM Hello - I just got the Firefold powered splitter for $60 delivered. Construction was a bit flimsy ~ it split my Oppo DVD player without any issues. My SA8300 STB was another story. Split the video fine - but audio works intermittently, but MUCH more not working than working.
So Monoprice - though a few bucks more may be a better option. This HDMI thing is a little tricky sadly. Well - at least stuff does look & sound good for all the baloney! D:)
i was also looking into this "splitter" but for a different reason i have only 2 hdmi inputs on my panny and i have 3 hdmi sources wanted to get this to share my ps3/dmp-bd30 connection ... that would work right? any PQ loss issues?

Actually you Sir are incorrect if you read the description it read as follows
Video/Audio Splitter - HDMI M to HDMI F X 2
This splitter cable is for splitting 1 HDMI signal to 2 HDMI.
Connector : HDMI Male to (2) HDMI Female
Length : 8 inches
(*) This is splitter cable. You can only connect one input device (i.e. DVD player, cable box or satellite receiver) to two output device(i.e. TV or projector). You can't connect two input device (i.e. DVD player, cable box or satellite receiver) to one output device(i.e. TV or projector)
stepmback 02-04-08, 02:31 PM I tried the monoprice distribution amp and had to return it. It had all kinds of problems and I could never it to work correctly. I know that Audio Authority has a distribution amp/splitter that is supposed to work well, but it is not cheap. I am now in the market for a 6 x 2 matrix switch, but have not found one that works in my price range.
While monoprice does offer good prices, I have found their equipment to not function as speced... to the point where the only thing I would buy from them are cables and other type accessories. I stay away from any of their electronics.

Sorry you are wrong, it does work for two displays thats what its intended to do! But you can only use one display at a time. If you try to watch two at the same time it will go hay wire!
These are the instructions for the passive splitter.
1. Power MUST BE OFF on all equipment.
2. Plug in both displays and player (power off)
3. Turn on one display to view a prog. then turn off.
4. Turn on second display to view a prog. then turn off.
5. Never try and play both displays at the same time, as the system will not function correctly and the resulting image will be very poor!
Designed for one screen only to work at any given time.
If you need both displays on at the same time you must have a powered splitter.
Tony359 03-19-08, 09:16 PM Hi guys
I bought the same splitter in UK (different brand but seems exactly the same).
I did not have the instruction I read here, perhaps this is the key.
I want to use the splitter to view a display at a time. Yesterday I installed everything: a DVD player with HDMI output, two HDMI cables.
I had one projector connected, and works. If I plug an HDMI cable to the second output of the splitter, the VPR stop working. The funny is that this cable is not connected to enything. How can the VPR/Splitter/DVD player know that I've plugged a cable in the splitter???
I think that DVD player does not have HDCP, VPR does. Very odd to me. I will try connecting the cables with power turned off, perhaps it is the key.
Thanks
Ciao
Antonio
