Can stand alone players play Xvid? I remember reading a while back that they only play DivX. That is of course if the player handles DivX?

I remember reading a while back that they only play DivX. That is of course if the player handles DivX? I believe players that do one will do the other. The Oppos do. One checkbox serves for both on this search page: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers Note that SD-DVD players that will play HD divx are rare. -Bill jevans64 01-14-08, 01:34 AM My Denon 2930ci plays MOST Divx/Xvid just fine but that depends on the quality of the discs. The encodes have to be done properly in order for the audio to sync, etc. If you are running a BASH script, .conf file, or .df file to tweak the aspect, sync the audio, etc., that isn't going to work on most players since they won't be able to understand the scripts. My encodes all work fine because I set them up to play w/o needing any configuration files. The Denon players don't support subtitles but I don't know about the Oppos etc. Your best option is still a dedicated HTPC ( like a SilverStone case ) to get the most out of Xvid. had1 01-14-08, 03:47 PM I believe players that do one will do the other. The Oppos? No. That search page has a checkbox for HD divx. I believe the PS3 can play them now. -Bill hrbngr 01-16-08, 02:03 PM Bill, Ill check the search page, but beyond a basic SD player, are there any affordable HD units either BD or HD that are good at handling various derivatives of Divx codes and XVID as well as the HD-Divx--w/USB access for playing off of a portable HD. I was originally just going to go for a cheap phillips player as they seem very divx compatible, but I have some concerns w/their image quality. I would then probably choose an OPPO, but at this point there are so many models available, I am not sure which one to choose. wmcclain 01-16-08, 02:11 PM Bill, Ill check the search page, but beyond a basic SD player, are there any affordable HD units either BD or HD that are good at handling various derivatives of Divx codes and XVID as well as the HD-Divx--w/USB access for playing off of a portable HD. I don't know anything about it's other features. There are only two Oppos in current production. The 980 has usb and the 981 doesn't. -Bill hrbngr 01-16-08, 06:45 PM Bill, thanks for the reply. I have done a bit more reading since my last post, I would definitely lean towards the 980 w/USB port if I can connect a portable HD to play my .avi's off of it, right? Notwithstanding the HD Divx files, can an OPPO 980 handle pretty much everything else in terms of formats? also, based on what you have heard, might it not be better to get a super cheap phillips 3960/5140/etc for now and wait for the 983 to come out? FYI, my primary pressed disc player is an SDI modded 2900 to a 55" mitsu CRT via a Lumagen proc. wmcclain 01-16-08, 07:11 PM Bill, thanks for the reply. The external harddrive must be formatted with FAT, not NTFS. I think there is a limit of about 700 files that the player can see on the drive. I don't know that the 983 will be any better than the 980 at playing divx. -Bill Crazy Serb 01-17-08, 07:58 AM yep, in most dvd players divx and xvid come in hand-in-hand, apparently... |
