"Actual DVDs" that is commercially pressed DVDs, have a thin layer of aluminum, which is the silver you see. DVD -R, and +Rs have a dye layer, not aluminum. So, I doubt you will find any with a silver dye layer.

Actually, there was, for a short time - back in 2001 or so, I bought some double-sided DVD-R's from an online company and they were totally silver - they looked just like "pressed" DVD's. The quality was HORRIBLE - probably half failed to work in my recorder. Those that did work, worked and still play perfectly. I guess the company went out of business - they were called USA Media or something like that - I've never seen 'silver' DVD-R's again from anyone.

Actually, there was, for a short time...and perhaps I should be a little more careful in my wording. There are plenty of recordable discs that are silver on the TOP, because that's where the aluminum reflective layer is (and some expensive disks use gold). But on the recording side the dye layer for DVDs has a blue-ish or purple-ish hue.

The DVD-R's I bought from that company were 100% silver, both sides recordable. I have no idea how they achieved it - but, it worked - their quality control was just awful though - one disc had cardboard dust or something like that trapped under the plastic. I've always hoped 'silver' DVD-R's would be produced again, but, alas, apparently not. I just wish I could remember the name of the company! They claimed the discs were made by them, here in the USA. About a month after we returned half of our last order because the recorder couldn't read them, the website was gone. So, we went back to ordering from Apple - 5 discs for $25 bucks... I can't believe I paid that! But, they worked all the time!

When I find one in my mess of discs (my DVD-R collection is well past 5000 now) I'll send it to you so you can see one.

They probably skimped on the dye so bad it looked clear. ;)

Didn't look like they had any azo dyes in them at all - these things were pure, gleeming silver. ProDisc makes the "Diamond" CD-R's with no color on the recording side - they are pure silver like a pressed CD - that's just what the DVD-R's looked like - I wish someone would make silver DVD-R's again.

"Prodisc Diamond CD-R is recommended if you are looking for a recordable CD-R with no color on the record side. A Diamond CD-R is pure silver, it looks very similar to the top side. Some people refer to these discs as Platinum CD-Rs. Musicians like the Diamond CD-R because they look the most like a replicated, store bought CD."
