My Rotel RDV-1092 will play both NTSC and PAL encoded discs. Must the TV also be PAL compatible or does the DVD player do the conversion for the TV? I am running the Rotel through a Panasonic TH42PX60U.
I am interested in seeing some live concert DVDs available only from Europe.
Thank you.

Some multi-system players will do PAL->NTSC conversion (and the reverse) but I don't know if all do. The Oppos do.
Does the setup on the Rotel include a choice of NTSC or PAL output? If yes, then I suspect it will do the conversion.
You might also research whether the Panasonic accepts a PAL signal directly. This info is hard to find in the North American market, but I think a lot of current panels do. It's a world-wide market, after all.

I'm pretty sure you Panny can do PAL (50hz). You can get sub $100 dollar players that can be made region free and player PAL discs. You're probably better off with playing PAL movies "native" instead of converting to NTSC.

Which DVD players and who does a good job of making them region free? I have some PAL DVDs which I would like to play on my system.

The player needs to be multi-system (NTSC + PAL) as well as region-free. If your display does not accept a PAL signal, the player must do PAL->NTSC conversion.
All the Oppos meet this criteria. Otherwise, this search page has 380 hits: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers?DVDname=&Submit=Search&Search=Search&dvdportable=&dvdchanger=&dvdtv=&multisystem=1&chipset=&orderby=Name&hits=50

The Phillips DVP-5960 & 5982 will play NTSC & PAL on NTSC tv's and can be made region free with a few clicks of the remote. Both are upconverting with HDMI and can be had for $50 - $60.
