View Full Version : Quality of Line-in on motherboard good enough?

I want to record some audio sweeps to make files for room correction. The files will be used with the Inguz room correction plugin for Squeezebox/Slimserver.

I have a DIY Mitey Mike mic and preamp that I want to connect to a PC with Audicity S/W for recording. Would a integrated Line-in on a regular PC motherboard be good enough for this? I have not been able to find any specs on my motherboards Line-in. It is a Abit AB9 Pro.

I have a M-Audio Revo 7.1 soundcard that perhaps have a better Line-in? But there is currently no Vista driver for this card, so if I want to use it I have to use WinXP.

The soundcard would be MUCH better than the typical integrated audio section for audio quality. However, for what you are doing, the integrated audio may be perfectly adequate.

Thanks! I saw some frequency response measurements done on soundcards some years ago, and some were pretty bad. But I don`t think the frequency sweeps goes to the extremes anyway.

It's good enough if you don't have anything spinning hard inside your computer.

Thanks!
I installed Audacity S/W on Vista yesterday and did a few recordings. The left channel of the Line-in was connected to the mic-preamp/mic. Mic placed in the listening position. The Squeezebox played its left channel through the left speaker, while the right channel was connected directly to the right channel of the Line-in. The right channel was way to strong, and the mic-signal was to weak.. Even with the gain at max, and the balance one notch from the extreme left.

Will try the Revo soundcard on WinXP instead.
