I've got a 50inch Panasonic Plasma (1080i) with a DirecTV HD DVR. I've been looking to get an upconverting DVD player, but thought it might be cool to get a DVD recorder so I could transfer stuff from the DVR. Obviously, the PQ won't be nearly as good, but would be great to capture some of the concerts from HDNet and stuff like that. I obviously don't need a tuner nor HDD since I will be recording everything from my DVR.

Any suggestions as to a good player with solid PQ? It will primarily be a DVD player, but would record DVD-R on occasion.

Also, are there any DVD Recorders that have component or HDMI inputs so you can record 480p?

I saw a cheap DVD-R at Costco - the Toshiba D-KR10 - seemed nice for the price, but not sure about PQ and have seen a Samsung DVD-R155 for cheap at Fry's as well. Are either of these decent?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

The PQ of the D-KR10 (same as the D-R400) seems pretty decent to me, but my HDTV is only 32" not 50! It seems to be a decent unit for the price being asked (I got mine pretty cheap). You won't know until you try it. Costco has a pretty decent return policy. It plays DivX well, if that matters to you. Light weight unit, so can stack on something else easily. Runs fairly cool.

I like it, I use it mostly as a DVD/DivX player and occasionally record. Has an interesting "satellite" feature that starts recording when it sees a signal appear on the input (but I've heard a lot of boxes always put out a signal rendering this less useful - but if yours doesn't, might be nice). I use it occasionally and it works as advertised. Also has composite pass through which means the signal on the composite input will be passed to your TV even when the unit is off. Sort of unique. Of course, composite is the worst of the various outputs available, but OK for some things (not for you , though, probably, with that huge screen).

DVD's look good via the upconverted signal (HDMI), DivX looks pretty good. Some Std Def TV stuff not so much. The remote is not so good, very hard to read the key legends and no back-lighting, but I program everything into my MX-500 anyway, so not a big problem for me.

All in all, not a bad unit for the price ($99-$150, usually, sometimes more or less).
