View Full Version : HDMI to DVI (Gefen vs. Audio Authority)

I have a TV which accepts only a DVI input. My new Sony STR-DA5300ES has 6 HDMI inputs which I would like to use for lossless audio (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA). The receiver will not accept audio through the HDMI inputs because the HDMI output is connected to a TV without HDMI (it has DVI only).

Therefore, I've learned I will need an adapter like the Audio Authority 1312 ($200) or the Gefen HDMI to DVI adapter with audio ($250).

Can anyone tell me which one is the better adapter or is there something else I should use??

I do not believe it to be so!

This receiver actually allows you to "turn-off" the audio going through the HDMI output.

Exactly! Please see the other thread in the receiver section I replied to....

I have this receiver and KNOW it to be true.

This is the claim of many postings in this forum. If you have a non-HDMI to HDMI connection between the Sony receiver and your TV (in this case HDMI to DVI), the audio is not transmitted from the source output (HDMI) to the receiver input (HDMI).

If you unplug the output between receiver and the TV the audio then comes on, but of course you then lose the video.

This is in almost every Sony thread on this forum.

I'm asking for the advice of someone who is aware of this problem and can offer information other than the options I have provided or the better option of the two I have provided.

I currently use a pre/pro with HDMI 1.3a capability and then run a HDMI to DVI cable to the Runco projector. This setup will work without a problem. The DVI connection to the projector will disable the audio portion of the cabling at the point of HDMI>DVI coupling.

Luckily for you. This appears to be a SONY problem.

This appears to be a SONY problem. So why don't you address your questions to a Sony rep or to the dedicated Sony STR-DA5300ES (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=880352) thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=880352)?

This is certainly not the general experience of everyone else.

The information I have listed is from the dedicated Sony thread (39 pages/1153 posts - I have read every post to date). It has been asked several times by several different people.

I have spoke with Sony reps. It is a flaw with ther receivers. If you read threads from previous Sony receivers, you see that this has always been a Sony issue.

I figured I would try another area to see if anyone could give advice on the best option of the two I listed (or possibly another option).

Any chance you can return the Sony? What a ridiculous bug!

I would rather get a splitter than what you are trying to do... look here: http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10113

Try this little experiment if you are feeling froggy.

take the Hdmi to dvi connection from between the reciever and projector and try it from the source to the reciever and see if the reciever will accept the video portion of the signal.

One more thought.....the hdmi to dvi conversion cable.....is it rated for DVI-I or DVI-D. I have always used the DVI-I cables, but do not know if this makes a difference due to the extra pins. I believe the extra pins are for Analog RGB but am not sure.

I believe the extra pins are for Analog RGB but am not sure. They are but have no bearing whatsoever on this issue.
