View Full Version : G90 - Internal Test Pattern Problem

Hi all,
Just replaced my YA board in my G90, hooked it up and am seeing what looks like electrical interference in the vertical direction of internal test pattern and menu items. This is not noticiable with an external signal from my PS3 or HD-DVD player, only the internal signals....any ideas??

thanks,
Jim

aren't the Ya/YB boards a matched set that shouldn't be mixed up? I'm not a G90 repairman but I slept in a holiday Inn last night. :)

Jim, did you flash the firmware to the projector?

Jim,

What was wrong with your G90? I thought you purchased a working unit. Please let us know the history. Sorry if I am the only one not in the know and this has already been disclosed.

Also, did you get the board from Sony or was it repaired?

Thanks!

Was this one of the $1800 Sony repairs?

It sounds like you might have arcing somewhere in the set, which is maybe what caused the Ya board to fail originally? Be careful with proceeding if that's the case.

1st answer...No we did not reflash rom when we got the new board and installed it. Would that make a diff?

2nd...Yes I bought what I thought was a fully working unit. However it turned out that there was a problem with the YA board in that the focus adjustments and astig did not function correctly. I ended up getting a replacement card from Terry. Other then that the sony works great but the issue with the menu and test patterns is still concerning even though it does not show up on an inputed signal

Jim,

Try PM'ing Don Kellog. I seem to remember him having an issue with the internal test patterns on his G90. Maybe Cliffy can chime in here. I mean, Don and him are sooo close, that they are like right and left nut!! So Cliffy should know about all of Don's G90 issues!!!

Jim,

I would flash the latest firmware to the projector to see if that fixes it. There might be a firmware difference between the two boards?????

The right nut doesn't always talk to the left nut..

Some more info. When I had the org YA board (the one with the focus and astig issue) Kris Roberts and I did not see the current problem. It was not until we installed the new board. Also in the process of pulling out boards and sticking them in his G90 to find the problem child we had to obviously reinstall them into mine. We had to have pulled and reinstalled 9 or so boards. I wonder if maybe one of them is not seeded correctly?

Kris did an initial setup on the G90 which has it about 85-90% there. We both plan to at some point have Ken W come to San Diego to calibrate/setup both of our G90s..Likely I wont mess with it until that time...or at least give Kris a few weeks rest (he came over no less then 3 times to help me out already)...

Ohhh yea...menu/test pattern problems or not..the picture from this baby is SWEET!!!!!

Jim,

Taking apart the G90 is not that bad at all. Just make sure you keep CLOSE track of the screws. :D

Why don't you start with a re-seat of the boards.

On my low hour G90 every time there is a dramatic change in temp, I have to reseat one of the boards in the back. It's happened twice since I got it. Once reseated, all is well again. :)

Also, pull and seat all of the large plugs that you see. It's possible that contamination is not letting the current through.

Hell, I'd pull and seat all of the connectors on the boards in between the CRT's as well.

It's good preventitive maintenance.

Re-flashing the firmware and re-initializing the user data are probably the next reasonable steps. Other than that I could pull my YA board and bring it up to see if the interference is there with my board as well.

When we first tried to do the setup on Jim's projector, the EM focus adjustments were not working properly. To figure out what was going on, we pulled many of the boards from his projector and I tried them in mine to isolate the problem. It was clearly in the YA board - and it turned out that Terry had one as a replacement.

I dont remember seeing the interference when we started with Jim's, but there is a small chance it really was there but the focus was out enough that we didnt notice.

When I was swapping his boards into my projector I do not recall ever seeing it on my set.

We did try a lot of the boards, so all these have been removed and re-seated: DA,
DB, DD, DE, DF, YA, BA and EBG/EBR/EBB. The last thing we did reas insert the replacement YA board and after seeing the interference we removed and reseated it without any difference.

FYI Kris and Jim,

The YA board I sent you didn't exhibit any problems at all and was tested in the G90 I pulled it from before sending it to you.

Hey Jim,

This is Tom with AHTS. I'm glad to read that you got your G90 working (sort of). I know I had a lot of fun hanging it from your ceiling. I've yet to see anything other than your RS1 and PS3 combo going in your room when I was reaiming the RS1. Please post some pics of the G90 in all its glory. I've had a lot of fun looking at 44+ pages in the screenshot war thread. I have to get some eye candy satisfaction after lifting that beast up to your ceiling.
