My Sony DVPNS77H/B upscaling DVD player really disappoints when set to upscale to an HD signal (720P or 1080I).
720P or 1080I settings on the DVD player make for a much more "grainy" look when compared to good 'ol 480P. Color and contrast appear to be more dynamic in the 720P and 1080I settings.
However, The 480P setting on the DVD player is smooth, clear and GORGEOUS in my opinion. The player is directly connected to the TV with an Acoustic Research HDMI cable.
My HDTV is a Philips 32PFL5332D/37... a nice 32" LCD (720P native) that is calibrated as best as I could with Avia. Most Auto settings are off (like DNR, color enhancement etc...) and the settings are very similar to many forum members with the 37 and 42 inch versions of the screen.
How many forum members experience degraded picture quality with an upscaling player? I assume this means my TV does a better job of scaling the material than the DVD player...
