View Full Version : Acoustic Research HDMI issue

My Sony upscaling DVD player is directly connected to my Philips 32" LCD with an Acoustic Research HDMI cable.

If I ever have to move the units on my TV stand to access any wires back there, the picture on the TV will sometimes go blank or straight to a colored static if the HDMI cable is moved or played with.

It can take a couple minutes of fiddling with the HDMI connection on the back of the DVD player to get the correct picture back. When working the picture is beautiful. If I jiggle the connector on the back of the TV, you can get the same effect on the TV's picture.

Once I get it right, I usually never have to play with anything - however, if I move the DVD player way out of position for any reason I will have to re-adjust.

Does this sound like a bad HDMI cable? Is it common for this to happen if you move the cable for any reason?

Should I try an HDMI from someone else?

Thanks!

Jonathan

Try a cheap and short HDMI cable to verify, but its just as likely that the problem maybe the connector on your DVD player.

kei is right... in all likelihood, it's the connector, not the cable...

I tried another cable - a Belkin this time. It fits more snugly into the player and the TV...

I can wiggle it at the DVD player with no problems, but if I wiggle the cable at the TV I get the same "colored static" on occasion. Then it returns to normal picture...

So, I guess it's the connector at the TV itself - is this normal for HDMI connectors or should the picture remain steady even if you wiggle the cable.

Performance is flawless - I just want to make sure none of the equipment I have is a problem waiting to happen over time...

You really shouldn't be able to "wiggle" the cable, which should fit snugly into the cable receptacle.

On a different note I never use acoustic research hdmi (all monoprice except one monster) and I had two optical cables made by acoustic research that never fit snuggly and would wiggle and be very easy to come out. I think whoever designs there cable should take a closer look.

No issues since switching to the Belkin. Nice to know I probably won't ever need another one, even when I buy a high def player as it's already HDMI 1.3.

Target had it for $29.00
