View Full Version : Senator Home Entertainment goes Blu
Danny_N 01-15-08, 01:39 PM German distributor Senator Home Entertainment announced today that they will go BD exclusive "sometime during the first six months of this year". This is the second German distributor to do so after Highlight/Constantin last week.
Senator has the German rights to movies like Death Proof, Planet Terror, Pan's Labyrint and 1408 amongst others. The HD-DVD release of Death Proof is still planned for March.

As a HD-DVD fan you should care about one less option to import movies that are BD exclusive in the US.
ottscay 01-15-08, 01:53 PM Another one of the European studios that are always cited as ways to import BD exclusive titles from. If the European studios go Blu-rexclusive (remember BD has a larger lead in Europe) then there will be no advantage to being region free.

Yes, I should. A MAJOR film company that put out Death Proof and Planet Terror worries me.

btw where is the link. Have to have a link with this type of post! senator.de has nothing but it is past thier go home time (5pm SHARP).
One senses a trend among studios, both here and abroad.
(And I'm sure the claims that Sony paid them $100M can't be far behind.)

Senator Home entertainment has confessed to a communication of the Blu-ray Disc Group according to Germany " clearly to Blu-ray ". As the syndicate informs, " senator Home entertainment in the course of the first half-year will publish in 2008 only films on DVD and Blu-ray ".
However, Ulrike Graupp, responsibly for the product management with senator, this confirmed on inquiry from videomarkt.de, bore no steady appointment say, when one will publish exclusively on Blu-ray in March.
umm yeah, don't use translation sites.. They are not to good at German to English butcher... er I mean translation ;) lol

Ha! Yeah, but I figured it was better then nothing.
soremekun 01-15-08, 02:52 PM It will be big news if Studio Canal goes bi or exclusive to Blu.
William 01-15-08, 03:22 PM It's a Sony Pay-Off. What's new? Sony wants to rule the world:eek:
With all the cash people SEEM to think Sony has I don't see why they just don't give everyone 2 BD players and 50 BD movies. Then throw in $1,000,000 cash so we can buy more BD movies. This would be a lot cheaper and would save Sony bags of cash that they are giving to every company as a bribe.:D

Wait you didn't get the memo? I got 3 ps3's and a Panasonic 2.0 player for free already. You know how they have a buy one get one free. This was a call Sony and get 4 BD players free. Then when I sent in for my 5 free movies there was a misprint. It was 500 free movies. I already have BD movies that will not be released till 2010 that have not even been made yet. I guess I am the only one.

What have I been thinking, I've been so wrong this whole time! Obviously every pro-Blu-ray advocate on every web forum is a paid shill, every small Blu-exclusive distributor like Senator, Constantin, Starz, etc. were all paid to go that way, and obviously they're paying everyone to help them produce 50GB discs because they have nothing better to do with their money. Oh, and let's not rule out them paying for more shelf space at retailers, and paying Digital Playgrounds to release on Blu-ray.

James R. Geib 01-15-08, 04:01 PM Funny thing is, I wouldn't put it past them. They don't mind loosing money for a long time just to win. They're tired of their proprietary crap becoming obsolete before the first unit rolls off the assembly line. Their honor is at stake.
"FREEEEDOOOOOOOOM."

"Winning" in business means making money. Sony has patient money, it's true, but I think the blanket assumption that they're paying the entire world is just wee bit off-kilter. :)
James R. Geib,
"They don't mind loosing money for a long time just to win."
And you don't think about what Toshiba is doing now, cutting prices of HD-DVD players, is not on the same line?

I don't think it is the same thing, I think they are trying to clear out inventory and help the retailers.
Of course, it doesn't matter what anyone here thinks, and only time will tell (when new players are announced, or not).

Well considetring that they have yet to post one Red quarter in their CE division. The answer is no, they are not losing money.

Toshiba sells a lot of products aside from HD DVD though. The question remains; how much money do you really think they're making on their hardware (if any) at the currently announced pricing structure?

Babble:
Senator Home Entertainment has itself a report Blu ray of the Disc Group Germany according to "clearly too Blu ray admits". As the consortium communicates, "senator Home Entertainment in the course of the first half-year will only publish 2008 films on DVD and Blu ray". Ulrike Graupp, responsibly for the product management with senator, confirmed this on request of videomarkt.de, could however no firm date say, starting from when one will publish exclusively on Blu ray. For March on hp DVD announced titles "Death Proof - dead certain" will appear anyhow still on this format as well as on Blu ray. "Death Proof" is a title of the US Independents The tartar company - for which still the hp DVD the bar holds.

Obviously they are losing money and have been subsidizing the entire line all along. If there was money to be made there would be other HD DVD manufacturers in the game.;)

Plenty actually.
Linux is free. So no need to pay for licensing of the OS. The most expesive part will be the optics themselves. $99 for blue "laser" diodes (405 nm) optics in mass quantities. That is still to "high" a price paid. mobo, etching, development.
Be extremely lucky if when said and done all this stuff cost toshiba much more than $70 per unit and that is using some numbers that I was able to gather on the 405 nm diodes.

And your take on why the A3 is now lower in MSRP than the Xbox $179 360 add-on, which has none of the necessary decoding circuitry or upscaling features?

Implosion?
That is IRRELEVANT.
What Microsoft sells thier product at is irrelevant to how much Toshiba sold it to Microsoft at. ;)

This may be a news flash for you, but Toshiba manufactures the Xbox 360 add-on. Considering the price drop on the add-on last fall was a whopping $20 from $199 to $179, I think your estimates on the production cost of HD DVD players is just a shade too low. Those internal chips that decode AVC, VC-1, TrueHD, etc. aren't free, internal memory chips (required in all HD DVD players) aren't free, and that's all above and beyond the cost of the drive assembly.
This thread is about the move of a German distributor to Blu-Ray, no?
whippersnapper 01-15-08, 06:36 PM who?Who? Dude, it's another one of the "falling dominoes" all of us are going to have to get used to.

In the end it is in fact IRRELELVANT.
Once it leaves Toshiba manufacturing plant and ends in Microsoft paws. They can sell it for $10000 if they want or sell it for $50, or as they chose for $179. Not you, I or any ones opinion will change that.
As for memory. 256MB is in the Toshiba. I am going to use the XA2 being the most pricey one with Current prices for me to build today.
256MB DDR PC3200 = $40 The individual 32Mx64bytes is cheaper. This is direct from crucial.
Celeron 900 (Closest thing has 128 Cache) = $49.
NEC D61335F1 = unknown as I can not get info from NEC on that currently.
Intel SB, NB and Bus Ctrl = another unknown waiting on intel to reply. They are always nice enough to send samples though. Knowing Intel, Package deal.
PCB etching, tracing, layout on a 6 layer PCB = $150 for 1 PCB my cost.
The 405nm diodes cost a whopping $40 bux each.
total damage with the two unknown not put in.
$279 dollars in parts.
Machining of the chassis and all plastic work. It might cost me about $800 to do this 1 time.
1 million times. Yeah........
this will end my offtopicness here.

And this little diversion has exactly what to do with Senator Entertainment?
Good news to hear about Senator. Here's to hoping that BD pricing in the EU will become more reasonable for people there once one format takes place.

Sorry, but I clicked on the link to this thread because I was interested in hearing about Senator Entertainment in Germany, not some other nonsense that is totally irrelevant to the topic. Could have started your own thread about Toshiba's bottom line and finances if that's what you want to discuss.

ravenous 01-17-08, 12:42 AM Just to judge by yourself.
Senator put out ONE Blu-Ray release in a whole year in Germany: Pans Labyrinth. They had never released a HD-DVD in the past.
The announced releases of the Weinstein movies (Grindhouse duo and 1408) where postponed until further notice for both formats.
So no real loss at all.
Wow. One blu-ray. This is huge news for blu-ray. ;) One blu-ray... LOL... oh boy, say hello to the next laserdisc = blu-ray.
I wonder when the first pizza delivery will declare to go blu-ray exclusive because they know it is cheap marketing.
